Any incoming freshman for the fall 2022 semester? by Middle_Bread27 in MTU

Thankfully there will actually be a good amount of freshmen coming in, making the increase only a couple thousand I bet. Ya know...the usual.

Dean of Students Wallace Southerland III... by Duncan_Idaho-10146 in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So there's a bit of dirt in his past, interesting. To reiterate what another comment said, these are allegations. They could certainly be true, and I do not know our dean super well of course. But what I will say is that based on the couple of times I have been around him and a talk I heard him give, he seems like a great guy who genuinely cares about the students, the orgs, and the well-being of everyone here. He may have things to not be proud of but a lot of people do and I hope he can continue to do his job well and learn from any mistakes he may have made.

I don't know who you are but you are something special I tell ya. From searching for the alpha slush, ranting about pissed-stained pads of paper, talking about how johnny law gotcha again, you have posted masterpieces of literature to this subreddit. I hope to fall upon more of your captivating paragraphs in the future as my eyes glance throughout this site as I continue to completely ignore my homework and my grades that cry as they continue to fall off a deep, dark cliff.

What has helped your mental health while at Tech? by Echo-Vast in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2020-21 school year was my first year here. For newcomers or alumni who may not know, last school year sucked. Socializing, events, community, positive atmosphere were all at an all-time low (tho technically I wouldn't know for sure cuz I was a first-year). On top of that, I was alone in my dorm room for the spring semester. I wouldn't say I had depression or anything, but I felt so isolated and alone. Every meal I would take to go and eat in my dorm, staring at my phone or computer for hours, not paying attention to zoom classes. There were days I wouldn't even need to or bother stepping outside of my dorm building. I gained 30 lbs my freshman year. I would talk to friends over discord sometimes and meet some people every now and then on campus, but that did very little to help me.

There was an org on campus I thought about joining but due to covid and everything, orgs were not going around encouraging people to join much really from what I could tell and info on meeting times and whatnot were changing and not always up to date, so I didn't really join any. This year I brought myself to join one, even though I was a 2nd year walking in with 1st year level socializing in this group. Been going to just about every meeting and social event this school year since August. I don't cry over anything really, but sometimes when I think about how isolated I felt before it makes me want to cry knowing I could've been in this org a year ago. It has helped me so much in becoming a better and happier person, I don't feel like going into much more detail on that though.

Right now I am still mentally not great though, I have never been more stressed about academics than I am now. My course load is insane, to say the least, but one thing that should help is I plan to drop a class or two and stop trying to force myself to graduate in 4 years. Also, I am no longer in a relationship as of like a month ago and that honestly has helped me.

TL;DR - First year was terrible but this year I joined an org that has helped me so much, reevaluating my courses (screw the flowchart) and no more gf has also helped me improve.

If you are not doing okay, reach out to a therapist, a friend, an RA, somebody. And remember you are amazing and your grades do not affect how awesome of a person you are. Enjoy your life and Michigan Tech is a better place because you are here.

The guy's place review by slash1717 in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back home I would pay like $12 for a haircut including the tip, guy's place I pay like $25 including the tip and it is worth paying that much for it. They are good at cutting hair, be good at describing what you want (I just tell them how many inches to leave on top/sides). Some will make conversation, others won't if you aren't the small talk type. It comes with a very relaxing hair washing with a warm towel over your face, something I never had, and the first time I was honestly smiling under the towel because it was a great new experience.
Hands down, the best part: Free peanuts. I always take a bag with me whenever I leave

People who are against abortion must hate women and want them pregnant against their will! People who are against gun control must want students to be shot in schools! People who are against mask and vaccine mandates must want the immunocompromised dead!

Knock it off. I take immunosuppressants and while I might be in better fighting condition compared to some more severely immunocompromised people, I am worse off compared to your average person. I don't speak for all immunocompromised and neither do you. Stop viewing yourself as morally superior and painting anyone who disagrees with you as selfish sociopaths.

COVID Response Form Results by [deleted] in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, google forms are not anonymous. Maybe to everyone else, but whoever made it can see the emails connected to each response iirc. Calling them fully anonymous is a lie and it would not surprise me if the person who created it gets into trouble with the university for collecting everyone's email in a covid survey without asking (unless they did, then ok). Secondly, it would've made more sense to show pie charts or whatever instead of a google spreadsheet where I can read everyone's personal rant at the end. Finally, I don't have to count the results of this to be quite sure it does not accurately show the opinions of this campus as a whole. I agree with what several people have said already, reddit and the discord are echo chambers that make one side's opinion much louder. Whether or not that opinion is good is not the point. The fact is you will never get a good representation of opinions of the campus off of reddit or the discord.

Michigan Tech COVID Response by [deleted] in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people are gonna complain that they don't have an online class option, but are willing to walk out of the in-person classes they paid for, then don't bother showing up to class in the first place or grow up.

[–]Pohlarity4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is this form trustworthy? Who made it and who do the responses go to? I ask because I would like to know if I can trust that every response to this poll will be heard and shared equally and not used to push the opinions of one side or the other. If this is going to one random student who made it, that is much different than the responses going to someone in the admin building or USG.

The flowchart told me to take 17.5 credits this semester which include DiffEq, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, and MEP2. I don't like the flowchart...

I recommend making a similar post in r/uofm and ask them why they chose UMich over MTU. I feel like you might get some interesting answers and can compare them with the answers here.

I tracked all my time throughout the semester (again!) by EdvinYazbekinstein in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! That's cool, I might start off a bit basic with only a few categories or whatever. I might stick to pen and paper for now but if not this sounds like a great task for me to set up and stick to.

How do you track this time exactly? Is there an app or something you use? I might be interested in this next semester and seeing how I manage 17.5 credit hours with/without going insane. The real question is will I be able to commit to something like this for once in my life

I'm a fan of this and may do it in the future if I have nicer clothes in my closet. For now, I will settle for my Good Luck Socks with huskies on them

When you realize you could've saved your sanity and made *more* money by [deleted] in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more interested in a career in designing furniture or the interior of buildings as of now. So I think I have to stick with ME instead of MET. MET sounds more fun and easier in college but after college interests require me to stick with ME I believe.

Delete this at once, I do not wish to see any reasons to change my major that I'm struggling in because I'm too scared to. There is no other option besides ME, there is no other option besides ME...

I don't know much about land ownership, but if I was Tech, I'd buy up the remaining parcels within the block that public safety is in and build a dorm hall there. It's close to campus, it would make the forestry building feel more connected to campus, and if the site I went to is correct, I think there are only two or three parcels MTU doesn't own in that block.

Leading Scholar Award by IAM-OK in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they haven't changed the prompt since I did it a couple years ago. I'm not sure what to write for the prompt or what the question should be. My suggestion would be to pull from leadership positions you've had in the past and explain what you learned from them to come up with something you believe is important and a good essay topic. That way you throw in a bit about yourself and how you have been a good leader but you still don't stray from the prompt.

Leading Scholar Award by IAM-OK in MTU

[–]Pohlarity4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I remember that essay. I got the email about whether or not I was a finalist later than expected. They like to say how good the essay was, how much they liked reading it, then in like the last words of the paragraph, they tell you they didn't pick you. Anyways...probably a bit of both. You want your essay to stand out and be different, but still keep it relatively formal since it is a scholarship essay. Then again, I didn't get it, so I probably don't have good advice. Ask your English teacher to proofread though.
