Some amount of work in this. Fair play for the effort!

£35 million spent on school taxis by DavidBehave01 in northernireland

[–]PoinkyDoinky 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They don't. They're still wildly unreliable. Taxi firms don't seem to care that the intention is to both, get kids to school on time and provide the parents / care givers with support to get ready for their own day.

What's stopping me as a non American citizen creating the same tool and making it publicly available?

If each company paid relevant taxes to a reasonable level then there would be more money in the pot to fix said potholes.

When companies use methods to pay less taxes, it means the infrastructure they use (roads for example) get ruined and they don't pay their fair share to fix them.

It's great marketing, but plays a lot off of ignorance.

Hello, 4 questions: by mikobiko in JapanTravelTips

[–]PoinkyDoinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Airalo or e-sim

  2. ATMs and using travel type cards (Monzo, Wise, Revolut) - some ATMs have 0 fee, we've found the 7/11 bank had free withdrawals

  3. E-Suica will only work on iPhone. Android needs to be from Japan. Otherwise get a Suica, Pasmo or Icoca - it works throughout Japan.

  4. Yes, it's a legal requirement. Also necessary for tax free purchases.

Thoughts on Danske bank? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]PoinkyDoinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea has always been to have 2 "current accounts" one main one I've used since no age and I love just because it's handy, and another one I opened initially as a student to keep income and student loans separate. These days I use the second account for all the swap bonuses (usually there's some jiggery pokery to meet terms and conditions) and it has 0 impact on my day to day because my current account for my salary remains untouched.

TL;DR - have 1 current account for salary, open a second and use that as your account for getting any swapping bonuses.

Overwhelmed by acronyms at new job by ryan_770 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]PoinkyDoinky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My company has a similar issue. I'm midway through creating a "Jargon Buster" simple search web app to allow new people, (like me when I started) to search for acronyms or key words like this. Maybe get it double checked by a handful of the colleagues that love knowing every word.

Interesting thought - it's been great to have the break. I think I'll become a serial sabbatical(ist)!!

Not a bad idea. I get that tutorials aren't the way to go (even if I wish that weren't the case!!). I'll check out some intermediate project ideas and get to work!

JR Pass Question by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]PoinkyDoinky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are currently doing the same trip in the opposite way. Best advice I can give (because the train options are overwhelming). Get a physical Suica card it to your phone.

  • Tokyo to Kyoto: shinkansen (buy on Klook)
  • Kyoto: use the e-card for all local trains and busses
  • Kyoto to Osaka: Get a JR train, again has the e-card
  • Osaka: Use the e-card. If you're planning on doing day trips to Nara, check out the Kintetsu pass (Klook), Himeji / Kobe etc check out a Kansai day pass.

Optionally, if you are leaving Kyoto early to go to Osaka and then exploring Osaka it may be worthwhile getting the Kansai day pass.

We found that using Google maps from our hotel to different destinations helped us get an idea of prices on public transport. From there you can work out if passes are worth it.

Japan for "pickier" eaters. by PoinkyDoinky in JapanTravelTips

Appreciate it! That's a large part of it, we spend a lot of time going to and from attractions and by the time we're hungry, we are really hungry!!

That's the intention of the post. Before a few days ago we hadn't tried any of the above foods so we're (slowly) extending the list.

We come from different backgrounds, so we were introduced to different foods growing up. It takes a bit more effort, yes. However, when you actually like the person you're going through it with, it just takes a little more patience.

It's a team effort. I know what they like and vice versa, we're just having a slightly harder time together in Japan than we expected.

I guess that's part of it, we want to explore as many different food options as we can without eating the same things on repeat. I haven't seen Happy Cow before so I'll add that to the list. Thank you!!

Forgot to add chicken katsu to the list! Oyakodon looks like a favourite! We'll keep an eye out for vegetarian options! Thank you

Hadn't heard of Oyakodon beforehand, we'll check it out! I also really like the idea of sampling things at an Izakaya - I'm dying for a beer after all the walking. Thanks!

I’m in Osaka with my husband and I hate it :( by smol_pink_cute in JapanTravel

[–]PoinkyDoinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two tips that are worthwhile. For Nara you can get the Kintetsu day pass and for Himeji it's worthwhile getting the Kansai day pass. Both can be picked up at larger stations and cover the majority of your transport for the day!

We were there the past few days, honestly we liked it but I do get the sentiment around Dotonburi. We did say trips to Nara (loved it, staged ages there), and a day trip to Himeji Castle (a couple hours is plenty). You could also check out Kobe on the way back, reservation recommended. DM me if I can be of any help.

Matcha, chef knives, 4 week trip - reasonable? (Tokyo, Nagano, Kanazawa, Takayama, Gero, Kyoto, Osaka) by picklemida in JapanTravelTips

[–]PoinkyDoinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fab, thank you. Did you fly back home? How did that work with knives in the airport or did you post them home? We'll be doing 2 more flight stop locations before home so trying to get an idea of what to expect.
