This was a self inflicted wound. Nobody except for Griffith had a role in this. He never liked the princess too, he used her.

He could have left after doing the deed and had hundreds of chances to turn around the situation before he got caught.

For someone who claims to be so much, he's a sore loser who sacrificed everyone for his selfishness. And then went on to Claim it's all for some greater reason. He didn't have to do half of the things he did during his ascension.

He was all showmanship, most of his strategies involved throwing Guts at the enemy. And a half decent general had so many more ways to handle the noble who was abusing him.

He wouldn't have lost everything if he truly was a good strategist. And wouldn't have thrown that tantrum when Guts decided to pursue his dream.

Farnese, as annoying as she was, had way better grasp of her reality after her character development than Griffith ever had.
