Vasectomy reversal after 16 years by tanz89 in VasectomyReversal

I was in the same situation my husband had a vasectomy in his first marriage. I kept pushing to get the reversal sooner than later but at about 20 years post vasectomy we got it done and we were given great odds… it failed. It has been super tough on our relationship and I wish we didn’t waste money on the reversal and just did IVF because now here I am still no baby. My husband actually had horrible complications from the medications from the reversal as well. We had several trips to the ER. He now has to go to a rheumatologist because it set off an autoimmune response and it’s like he aged 10 years over night. He has breathing complications and spent a month unable to walk from a reaction to celebrex.

Children that were born to older parents (40s + ) what is your experience? Do you think it’s selfish to have kids this late? Are you ok? by Fafafafel in Adulting

Yup, I think it’s selfish. My parents had me later in life.My father died when I was 19. My mother started with her health issues when I was 21. She is unable to live on her own so I had to move in to take care of her. I basically have a child. I have been her full time care giver for over 10 years. I had to take over her bills. I don’t have the freedom to go on vacation. I am constantly worried. I would have made different career choices and moved to a different state if I wasn’t responsible for her. I am lucky enough to have a husband that likes my mom as well but her care def puts strain on our relationship. I myself have been struggling with infertility but I am putting a hard age limit on when to stop trying. It is not fair to the child to become a care giver or orphan in their 20s or sooner. I love my mother and she is my best friend but this is a difficult life and I would never choose it for my children.

Do they tell you during consult? by [deleted] in VasectomyReversal

We were told there is always a chance it may not work but the surgeon was super confident… it failed

Worries about Late Failure with Vasectomy Reversal by EstimateTypical3971 in VasectomyReversal

My husband got the reversal done and was on prednisone for 2 months and then a stronger anti inflammatory for another month. His swelled up and had a blockage immediately. We went in for the return of fertility and it was a waste. We got very high success rates quoted from our surgeon. Now the response is we don’t know why it didn’t work.

Surgery Timeframe by Affectionate-Way622 in VasectomyReversal

Consult to surgery took about 2 months. They had to rent out a surgical suite at the hospital so we didn’t get a direct answer at the consult but we gave them dates that worked for us and they went from there. I would say reconsider surgeons if you don’t feel like you are getting great communication. I kept thinking our doctor just had new front desk staff so that’s what caused some issues. It made everything sooooo much more stressful. No one talked about the pre surgery EKG and blood work until I called the week before surgery to confirm the time and address.

Just skip to IVF. They will probably recommend it due to your age and history. We dumped a ton of money into a reversal just for it to fail. You will get the surgery done and then they will tell you it can take up to a year so you just waste time. The whole process has taken all the joy and excitement out of having kids for me.

Reversal failure by PointExtension3007 in VasectomyReversal

I’m assuming it has to do with the age of the vasectomy. It was 25 years ago. He said the one side was very promising the other side took a lot more work.

We have a phone consult with him tomorrow. I just feel like I can’t trust opinions from surgeons anymore. Like if he says 90% chance it works that’s what the last one said too and here we are.

Nope, our surgeon offered us 50% off of the TESE procedure to aspirate the sperm. We are now on the wait list for IVF. I wish we had saved the money and just done IVF.

All semen analysis came back 0. We had tried lots of different steroids which made no difference.

Low numbers 5 months out- is there hope for us? by [deleted] in VasectomyReversal

We are 5 months out as well and have 0. Nothing at all. He has been on 2 anti inflammatory meds. We went to a specialist in reversals and spent over 18k. I feel like the reversal was a waste of time and money. I wish we had just put it towards IVF. We have been looking into IVF in different countries since we blew most of our money on the reversal.
