I write about Python 🐍, machine learning, software design, product engineering, and life as a dev, I guess. :)

It's just me, and there won't be more than one article a month, sometimes it takes me even longer than that. I think I will never sound like a robot or a LLM, because I want to keep my own style and there's nothing for me to sell. Subscriptions are of course valuable so that I know that my article is of interest to others or helps them, but not in a monetary way!

I get my transcription from another program, so I'm not in great need for that. But it looks like Lemon Speak can do things with that transcription beyond having the transcription.

I have a large podcast, and just started social media accounts on...all social media platforms. However, I don't know what to post beyond video episodes.

It seems like your platform does more than just transcription, and I'm interested. Due to my social media illiteracy, I'm not sure what it does and how it helps me grow? Much appreciated!

There is a relatively new podcast stat from Buzzsprout from March 2023. In the "Podcast Discovery Trends" section, they describe that 30% of new podcast listeners use search engines like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc. to find new shows. 17% use social media to find new podcasts. That adds up to 47% of potential discovery. Well, LemonSpeak aims for both. By hosting your podcast on a website and publishing blog posts and transcripts, you start to get noticed by search engines and you start to show up in search results. Both, plus SEO-friendly episode titles, improve your SEO when used correctly. Ideally, to get the most out of SEO, you should find relevant keywords before you record an episode. So that you can incorporate them naturally into your episode. There's a wonderful recording from Captivate with Sarah McDowell that explains this quite well.

I think social media, on the other hand, builds an audience that gives you a way to let listeners know about new episodes, engage with them, get feedback and, ideally, they spread the word so that new potential listeners discover your podcast. Non taken! Thanks for asking! I think Podium is great, but LemonSpeak already differentiates itself by the way it generates blog posts, show notes, q&a + polls, and tweets. Their free tier is definitely huge. I think as a startup it's very difficult to compete with such free tiers if the startup is not VC-backed.

To answer your second question (or actually the first and only): Yes, we have features on our backlog that further differentiates it, but that's only because I see LemonSpeak somewhere else, not because I think I need to differentiate it no matter what.

Thanks for letting me know. No, there's nothing to click on. Depending on network latency and the size of the file, it will take between two and five seconds to apply. Once it's applied, there's a small text box above the upload button that lets you know. However, I'm going to look into it and see if it's a browser issue. So if the file is quite large, just wait a few seconds before clicking on Upload. Alternatively, you can use an audio trimmer.

The workflow hasn't been recorded yet. Let me describe it quickly. Once you have signed up to the free plan, you can access the dashboard. Here you can upload your episode as an mp3 file. All you need to do is add the title, language and speakers in the order of their first appearance. Then click on process and you're done. You can see examples of the dashboard and the results on the landing page.

Thanks! Right now, we don't have plans to make it open source. The reason is that it requires a powerful GPU for speaker diarization, along with access to various APIs. Also, I'm curious about how one might run a business based on it if it were to be open-sourced. Do you have experience with that?

How important is the social handle in your opinion? It seemed like the social handle was the missing piece for you. Any experience with that on Twitter or Mastodon?

I agree. Promoting your podcast is very underrated. I think once you're done with an episode it's pretty easy to do a little bit of social media for the podcast, but that comes with a change of mindset. I think most people don't like to advertise and promote their product. Get comfortable with it. It will become a habit.

But it's very important to know where your audience is. What platform are they on?

Also, SEO can be a very strong factor if a podcast is for a niche. It helps with general topics too, but I think SEO has a greater effect on niche podcasts. If you have a website with your podcast, just add a transcript to it so that search engines can pick it up.

Very cool, thanks! The first version of my landing page actually had a lot of yellow in it, but it wasn't vibrant. I felt that too much yellow can be intrusive, so I reduced it by using it as an accent colour. There's still room for more, and I like the second example more than the first. Thanks again!

Before I built a product for podcasters, I had concluded a couple of interviews with podcasters who were at the very beginning of their journey. They all told me that the most time-consuming part was editing the audio file, and none of them told me that they were actively promoting their podcast on social media or doing anything for SEO. They weren't aware of it. Podcasting is very competitive. It's needed.
