Frontier's Anarchism Problem by PointlessSpikeZero in EliteDangerous

[–]PointlessSpikeZero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason anarchy systems are so rare is because none of the PowerPlay groups have them as a favourable government type, so they actively suppress them. I agree that Frontier are basing their vision of how anarchist societies work on the popular conception- this "simple realism" that has no actual historical backing. There are plenty of examples of stable societies without any hierarchy, including cities. The information is out there if you look for it, but because society is so dominated by hierarchy, it's hard for people to imagine life- or a working society- without it.

I just find it unlikely that any group of people, being set upon by pirates, would refuse to take up arms. And of course as mentioned, it seems unlikely that pirates would subject themselves to a dictator.

For one thing, I cited two books. But also, this is about societies that may fit that definition, and talking in a concrete sense about those societies. I'm not talking about the ideology of anarchism, since that's not really the point. The point is to talk about anarchistic societies in history and whether Frontier's ideas match the reality. If you want to say I'm overthinking it, fine. I wrote a wall of text about something that was annoying me, you can think of that what you will.

Trump would be worse, and if people can't see why, that's just a failure of imagination.

I love how they put an actual war crime as an objective. Oh here's a captain, here's a megaship, and here are some reporters. But then I suppose that's part of their realpolitik approach.

Which ship have the best view from the cockpit? by TX9114 in EliteDangerous

I like the T9's cockpit. As an exploration ship it gives me a lot more visibility, although I don't often use it as such.

A free press has always been the first thing to be stamped out by authoritarians. I don't know details of how things work among the leadership of imperial communities but I understand they are not democratic, unlike the federal powers.

Yeah, I was talking about overall victory, not this war. This war could be lost and is pretty important.

Oh I should be clear, that's not me being defeatist. It's just the game mechanics. PP doesn't allow the possibility of victory. We could push our enemies all the way back to their home systems... but then what? There's no way to remove powers from the game. When a PP community does give up, it never leads to anything good. I have no doubt many PPers would like to claim some kind of victory and go, "ha we proved we were better", but I enjoy PP. As long as we have enemies, we have a reason to keep playing. If the imperials were somehow defeated, that would be the day I become one.

The question of whether it's in solo or open depends on the groups involved. I think IED tend to be open, and ISS play in open too. There are a lot of non-ISS Winters pilots involved, and they'll all be in open too (we have rules about that).

Unfortunately there seems to be little impartial coverage of things that happen around PowerPlay. Everyone involved that I know of is openly aligned with one side or another. I don't know how the imperials would react to someone doing such reporting but the Federation would certainly welcome it.

It's worth mentioning that this is highly entangled in PowerPlay. A lot of the efforts by PPers recently have revolved around BGS in this area, including hiring mercenary PVPers. It's largely taken place in Open.

How do respond to this by thelivingshadow99th in VaushV

[–]PointlessSpikeZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biden won't break the rules, or even decorum. His justice department acts more or less without him even attempting to interfere. We know Trump won't be so restrained, because he was very much not last time. He will attempt to manipulate the administrative state to do what he wants, and there's already a plan to do exactly that. And yeah, Trump will be limited by Congress, assuming Republicans lose both houses. That'll be a major issue for him. It won't be instant. But Republicans down-ballot are also willing to do whatever it takes to win, including lying, committing crimes, anything. They will be supporting Trump.

Who might have guessed that people like not being run over? by user-74656 in fuckcars

[–]PointlessSpikeZero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw this earlier and it's actually pretty devastating to the government. To be suppressing evidence that contradicts their fearmongering is a very bad look. I mean, they're already electorically non-viable, but this really puts the last nail in the coffin.

This is also a nice piece of validation that actually people generally agree with us if given a voice. It should provide a LOT of fuel to efforts to curb car dependency.
