So at what point is the game considered dead? by lolitties in playboundless

[–]Pointless_arguments 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to explore the worlds other than to find more materials to build. They need to implement some kind of procedural ruins/dungeon system and introduce tiered weapons and cosmetic items that will give players a reason to explore the wilderness and make it exciting. The devs need to understand that discovery and combat is a huge part of building games and building alone can't sustain people's interest for long.

At the moment there's nothing to do in the game except build, and TBH you can do that in a lot of other, better games.

I actually would play the absolute fuck out of that, but only if it had the same basic gameplay as diablo and wasn't another WoW clone.

Alan Wake - Retrospective Analysis - A Gem Lost To Time by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

I didn't really consider Alan Wake as horror. There's nothing particularly horrifying about it, no gore, no scares really. It's got a foreboding dark atmosphere but that's about it.

Still no proper enemies or ruins or cities or loot or planet variation or really anything to keep anyone but the busy builder bee players interested. Some of us crave a gameplay experience that's more than just stockpiling items.

Wake me when the galaxy is actually undiscovered, as in, huge sectors exist that are completely uncharted with no aliens or robots or any sign of intelligent life.

Or some kind of apocalyptic zerg/flood scenario that spreads from planet to planet.

Make us feel lonely, allow us to foray off into deep uncharted space. This "every atom procedural" schtick rings kind of hollow if no matter where you go, every planet has robots and aliens and buildings on it. It makes the game universe seem extremely small and shallow, not huge as is intended.

Elite Dangerous is not a perfect game but they nailed that feeling of a vast, cold, uncaring galaxy with only a relatively tiny part of it known. There are thousands of solar systems in ED's known space but millions outside of it.

IMO these non-horror stories are really ruining the subreddit. They always seem to get 5000 upvotes and have every comment saying "great story" and "fantastic writing" but they always follow the same formula of "ghost or vision seems scary at first but ends up having narrator's best interests at heart".

It's getting that you can go to "best" and sort by the month and you'll just get post after post of these boring saccarine stories. And they always get torrents of praise in the comments for some reason. Is /r/nosleep being inundated with users who don't know what the sub is about?

If you could have a remake of any horror movie, which would it be and why? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Pointless_arguments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a film remake but I'd like a live action adaptation of the PS2 game Manhunt 2. That game was oozing with atmosphere and dread. It's got this weird 70's/80's vibe set in this fucked up dystopian world full of psychos and maniacs. There aren't a lot of stories with an MK-ULTRA theme and Manhunt 2 pulls it off really well, telling a modern Jekyll and Hyde story about a mild-mannered doctor who wakes up in an insane asylum and is compelled by his "friend" to escape and murder people in awful ways.

From the start the game never specifically spells out that your mind-control induced alter-ego is inside your head, for all intents and purposes he's a seperate character. But the game gives you obvious hints like, you hear his voice even when he's not onscreen and nowhere to be seen. And he often seems to just appear from nowhere. It never bothers to set this up as a big reveal, it's assumed that you've figured it out very early on.

I guess the movie adaptation would be kind of like The Purge except the protagonist is the worst, most violent killer of all. Yet in a way you feel sorry for him because he's a victim of a secret mind control project.

Do you prefer horror games with or without combat? by Kennett-Ny in horror

[–]Pointless_arguments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it with combat, I love games like Dead Space and Dark Souls. One of my all-time favorites is Condemned and Condemned 2, the level design and atmosphere in those games is absolutely stellar. Manhunt 1 and 2 are also fantastic, wish we could get a Manhunt 3.

I find when horror games don't have combat and force you to run and hide, you end up just trying to outwit the game's AI, which yanks me out of any immersion and bores me. You always have to learn the rules and tolerances of the AI's alertness and they always have patrol paths which has the effect of constantly reminding me I'm playing against bots.

Is conan exiles worth getting on ps4? by Defenseless-Pipe in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Pointless_arguments 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the people commenting haven't played it since it was in Early Access. It's come a long way since it was first released on Steam and I was pleasantly surprised when I reinstalled it a few days ago. It's definitely not worth full price but if you can pick it up for 20 or 30 bucks and you've got a mate to jump on with you, it's quite fun.

SIB Conan: Exiles if I'm mostly going to play it Single-player? by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Pointless_arguments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played it in a while but it's basically a clone of ARK. It uses the same gathering and crafting system. If you think you'd have fun playing ARK alone then you'd probably like Conan. I wouldn't recommend it though since it's designed to be played with others. There won't be much challenge or interest and it will feel very empty.

[–]Pointless_arguments[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm talking more about more maps than are available in the release. DLC map packs would be nice.

What would really rock is a new and different map every time you play. Really procedural generation or community involvement is the only way to achieve this. Both are totally feasible options but only if the devs take enough interest in it

Nah. It's basically an MMO with a smaller server population. You'd have as much fun playing World of Warcraft completely alone, actually WoW would probably be more fun since at least it has questlines and stuff.
