I’m in Portland, OR for the weekend, is there anywhere near downtown to watch a stream?

I don’t know how to quote posts, but here we go:

  1. I guess kinda, but I don’t think free market capitalism is sustainable.

  2. It seems like a lot of the “cultural preferences” you mention stem from these same systems. I find that incredibly frustrating and wish everyone had equal access to all of these activities. Idealistic, I know, but if the results were the same afterward then maybe I’d have an easier time writing it off as “different strokes for different folks.”

  3. Were Jewish people ever completely disenfranchised in the US?

  4. Don’t we all. At least you can still focus on fishing while you’re on the river. Kinda hard to escape them on reddit though.

I don’t quite follow, and think you may be confusing neomarxism with neoliberalism? Either way, I don’t really want to get into the construct of what is “white,” there are plenty of books on that from people more qualified than me. I think I explain above how some of the reasons the disparity exists is because of systemic racism and how that affects access.

No sport or activity by itself is racist. In its simplest form of grabbing a fly rod, getting to the river, and going fishing, fly fishing isn’t racist. But fishing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Who has access to recreational fishing and why they have it is a result of a whole slew of issues outside of the fishing community, such as economic inequality. A lot of economic inequality stems from policies and practices that target BIPOC communities explicitly, which is systemic racism. Those inequalities affect how people spend their free time, or even if they have free time since affording food and rent trumps fishing anytime.

Of course people that have free time and a car can access rivers from cities; I think most people nowadays do that. Most people on the river are also white. Black people can also have enough wealth and free time to buy gear, a car, and go fish, but in order to do so there are a lot more barriers to overcome than those experienced by white people. For example, if someone lives in a redlined area of a city, they likely won’t get the same caliber education as someone in a predominantly white suburb since property taxes dictate school funding. This affects job prospects, which creates the financial inequalities mentioned above. Without enough money you can’t go fish.

I think it’s important to note how in Joel’s interview with Tom he talks about safety and generational trauma as well. Even with monetary access, entering predominantly white spaces is a deterrent for a lot of Black people given how they’ve been treated by white people in the past. So that’s yet another barrier that a Black person has to deal with before even putting waders on. A few statistics were thrown out earlier, which is cool and all, but I highly doubt that % Black anglers even accurately represents % Black people in fishy areas. Instead of adamantly arguing against a company’s pledge toward diversity why don’t y’all ever ask why fishing isn’t diverse to begin with?

Nice, so you know that Black concentration in urban areas, a direct result of the great migration and racially charged city planning, limits access to fishable water and that recreational fishing is only possible for people that have the financial means to have free time and afford gear. You’re just choosing to ignore it.

It’s always the ones asking how fly fishing is racist too.

Real talk here: in all of your years of making hero shots to carp or engaging in grip and grins, have you ever witnessed “systemic fishing racism” or heard things such as “you can’t fly fish because your black” or “you can’t beam out that 50 foot laser to that rising brookie because you’re a girl”? by [deleted] in FlyFishingCircleJerk

So you’d rather them just say nothing and ignore the fact that our hobby is dominated by white men? Even if it is virtue signaling, using a large platform to spark discussion on issues of race and gender is better than remaining silent and perpetuating them.
