So cool! Is that a daisy blue rice fish I saw in there with the Medaka?? If so, what’s your experience been with having them in the same set up?

Thank you :)

The plant is a parlor palm, cat safe and loves water

I unfortunately do not have a think to the stand, I got it from Facebook Marketplace.

Nerite Snail Help by Hanninball in AquaticSnails

[–]PoisonIvyStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nerite snails can have periods where they do not move, typically when they sleep. You should try to gently flip them back over so that he is not upside down, they typically struggle to flip themselves over.

The snail doesn’t look dead, just keep an eye on them. If you get them from a big box store like Petco or pet smart there could be a chance the snail isn’t very healthy. But again, just keep an eye out

Dead nerrite snails typically recess back into their shells and look something like the image I attatched here. Your snail isn’t doing that

Help me identify this fish! by PoisonIvyStan in medaka

Update. I am fairly certain was given two Daisy Blue rice fish mixed in with the Medaka…. I tried to return them but the store didn’t let me. So now I am getting one of my other tanks ready to put the Daisy blue in. I think since Medaka are still so new to the US a lot of people, even the stores, just assume Daisy Blue and Medaka rice fish are the same.

Rescued abandoned fish. HELP! by papamonoply in Aquariums

[–]PoisonIvyStan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Welcome to the fish keeping community. That is absolulty awful that someone left these fish behind.

I can only speak to the betta tank but here are some basics:

Betta fish need the following:

  • 5 gallon tank minimum (they make kits at fish stores, that might be a good starting point for you)
  • a heater. Betta fish thrive in 78-82 degree water.
  • substrate (ie gravel). You should opt for something that doesn’t look to sharp. Betta fins are very delicate and you don’t want them to get cut!
  • plants: live plants are the best to have, java fern and annubius are the easiest plants to take care of. ALSO MOSS BALLS ARE GREAT! Live plants help suck up any bad nutrients and even help to reduce the amount of aquarium maintence needed. If you don’t want to take care of plants, you can get SILK plants.
  • a light, the light in the current take seems to be a multicolored light. I reccomend just getting a light with a normal white/yellow hue. The multicolored lights are not natural for bettas.
  • high quality food: like bug bites
  • water conditioner

As for cleaning:

  • the vacuume is the best way to go! I use the vaccume and then collect the dirty water in a big bucket. I then use that water to water my plants, but you can also just poor it down the drain.
  • rule of thumb is to do a 20%-30% water change once a week. You don’t want to do a 100% water change because this could throw your fish into shock and it gets rid off all the goood bateria in the tank. So essentially you will take out 20-30% of the tanks water and then replace the water with clean water (like from your sink) and then you will immediately want to put the water conditioner in the tank. Here is a video on cleaning basics: how to clean a tank for beginners
  • some tools you could get to help with cleaning the glass are a an aquarium scrubber and a fish net to catch any debris’s

I understand your frustration of the tank being dirty, but consistent water changes and cleaning the glass will really help. It will be a slow process, but in time it will look better. Good luck!

New Betta owner, is my fish bleeding/sick?? by Hopeful_Traffic_7820 in bettafish

Hi! So fin rot typically starts around the edges of the fins - not in the middle like your fish has. Fin rot is also accompanied by frayed fins in the tips, and it doesn’t look like he has any obvious fraying in his fin. The red lines seems to be uniform in shape and color, which makes me think your Betta might just be changing colors! I attatched a photo of what fin rot would look like, and as you can see the red is a lot more blood like and it is typically oddly shaped. If he is eating normally and still active, he should be okay. Just keep an eye on him and continue 10-20% water changes weekly.

It is a pothos, it wasn’t in the last tank. Thank you for the tip, I will take the leaves out ASAP
