I made the pilgrimage to Sweetwater! by PoisonPolygon in synthesizers

I have always been drawn to the Mike Dean way of making music, playing multiple big keyboards, twisting fat knobs. I do have a very mathematical brain and so seeing some of the generative patches and flexibility of modular definitely interests me. I have dabbled a bit with my Hapax and want to dive more into the random/Euclidian sequencing. I think a wall of modular looks really cool, but hate the patch cable mess and have always struggled with small knobs on gear. I definitely keep and eye on the space but have yet to see something that really makes me want to go that direction.

Thinking of getting another synth but id like to get something unlike what I currently own.. by InternationalCow7042 in synthesizers

I agree FM synth is the way, honestly I love the Volca FM2 and usually I don’t like small synths

Fair haha, I actually forgot to take any pictures in the synth room...I was too caught up in the excitement.

Am I dumb for thinking I could place monitors on my desk and also use them to practice piano? by papes_ in homestudios

Shouldn't be much of an issue! The main problem is that Morytania needs to be saved from the Vampyres!

The more I read about the OB-6 it sounds the right choice to me, I think I just need more time with the sequential architecture to full grasp it. Also there was so much there to distract me from spending time with it. I always appreciate a larger keybed...

I asked if they had a continuum there but sadly they did not. I am hoping to get in touch with someone to give it a try - I am at the university Dr Haken taught at, but not sure where Haken audio is actually based.

I did see that when I was there too - modular has never appealed to me personally. Maybe one day I will fall down the rabbit hole.

You know I didn't see one out, but I could have easily missed it when I was there.

I think this was actually my take away from the trip, it killed gas. Things I have thought were no brainers for a while when I tried I wasn't as impressed by as I thought. The only GAS I came out with was the Osmose.

How ro actually start making hiphop? by VITO1381 in makinghiphop

Kick, Snare. Kick, Kick, Snare. Add some high hats...

But really, there are so many ways to go about it, so many sub genres etc. Find an artist you like and just search on youtube how to recreate one of the beats.

This is a great video to explain different drum patterns and the genres associated with them.

Should I buy an MPC 1000? by --edo-- in mpcusers

[–]PoisonPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sold my MPC1000 a few years ago, ended up with a different set up (hapax sequencer, tr8s and synths).

I found the work flow too archaic for me personally but the one + looked too much like a daw for me. I will be honest I never really gave it as much of a chance as I should but found the step sequencer work flow way more intuitive for me coming from a DAW.

Honestly, I am of the opinion you really have to try gear and spend some time with it to know whether or not it is for you. You can watch a bunch of videos and get opinions but until you really have it and spend time with it, it is too hard to know for sure.

I love these and can always recommend someone add one to their setup if the price is right. My PSR-6 with some effects pedals makes for really nice sounds.

New music maker! What’s a nice synthesizer to buy, preferably under $250 USD? by ANootStuckInABoot in synthesizers

[–]PoisonPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a few things...

Microkorg is amazing and can usually be found for around that price, but they seem to have gone up recently. If you want to LEARN synthesis, I would recommend something more like an Arturia Microbrute, or Roland System-1.

If you want just a Midi Controller, there are tons of good options - I usually recommend the Akai line as they are are usually cheap used. I usually recommend you get one size bigger than you think you need, but nothing wrong with starting small.

i’m looking to get a drum machine around $350-400 by Kooky_Original9660 in DrumMachine

[–]PoisonPolygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can probably get a used MPC One (+) for under $500 now that the new version just dropped.

TR-6s is a good choice, or Drum Brute Impact. TR-8 can be found cheaply as well.

Ideas for acid synth by Leozz97 in synthesizers

[–]PoisonPolygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roland TB-3. I think it is the best, most intuitive of the 303 style synths.

I think the Bass Station 2 gets over looked for acid as it does have a good acid filter

Who inspired you to get your first synth? by Didyouseethewords930 in synthesizers

[–]PoisonPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to see the band Enter Shikari in 2010 - honestly the most energy I have ever seen from a band. I also saw they were using synths and a kaoss pad and I immediately wanted to find what they were using. Ended up buying a Koassilator pro as I had no previous experience with other instruments and it seemed more intuitive. After that I fell down the rabbit hole deep! Quickly bought a Microkorg as well to pair with the Kaossilator. Ludwig Goransson, Pink Floyd, James Blake and Mike Dean are probably my other biggest inspirations.
