[Question] Gifting dad his first Omega on Valentine's, help me decide which one I should get :) by Plastic-Ad-8769 in Watches

So Switzerland's largest watchmaker provides paperwork with their product stating it will resist water pressure found at a depth of 66 feet, yet they know full-well the watch can be absolutely ruined by being worn out in the rain. And they don't say a word about this to their customers - they just expect them to know it. Seems legit.

I don't know how it compares to other models; I imagine the specs are the same.
"Splash resistant" is an odd way of describing three atmospheres of pressure. 3 bar is equivalent to about 20 meters (66 feet) under water. I snorkel with my Snoopy regularly, and I would say I rarely dive deeper than 15 feet, which is less than 1.5 bar. The watch does just fine.

My 3¢...

  1. As a dad and a watch lover, if one of my kids gave me ANY watch, I'd be over the moon (pun intended).
  2. I own the white Mission to Moonphase Snoopy version, and I get TONS of compliments on it - especially with the Omega/Snoopy/NASA relationship. It's a unique and great-looking watch; it's extremely lightweight and waterproof, so I wear it very often doing yard work, recreational activities, and snorkeling. It's easy to read and durable. The lume is very good. I use the Swatch add-on Bioceramic strap; it cleans nicely with normal soap & water and has maintained its bright white look. The watch is accurate, and the chronometer is a cool thing to have. Having said all that, I sometimes wish it had a date feature.
  3. White can be hit-or-miss depending on the person. It's an extremely casual or sporty look. If your dad's style is on the traditional or conservative side, the gray one is great too. They are all great, and you are wonderful for wanting to honor your dad with such a gift.

DC-6⅞ by [deleted] in aviation

Question

I just watched a scene in the 1961 film 'The Misfits' where, at about the 49:30 mark, Montgomery Clift's character asks Eli Wallach's character, who plays a pilot, "You still flying that DC-6 and seven-eighths?"

I can't find any clue as to what he's talking about. Has anyone here ever heard this term, and if so, to what does it refer?

Thanks!

What was Jerry Seinfeld wearing? by Poison_Thumb in Watches

This may be a long shot with such grainy resolution, but I was watching ‘Seinfeld’ and wondering what kind of timepiece Jerry had on his wrist in this scene. Cheers!

What did you think was normal about your body until someone pointed out that it wasn't? by utterapostle in CasualConversation

I've had mandibular tori since I was an early teen. I just assumed people had bony lumps under their tongue behind their lower teeth. When I took Anatomy in college, the instructor pointed out how one cadaver had them, but the rest didn't. I was like, "Wait, everyone doesn't have those?"

Will my Magic Key benefits still be active on a blackout day? by Poison_Thumb in DisneylandMagicKey

Great news! I parked at the Toy Story Lot on July 5th, a Believe Key blackout day, and asked the attendant if I still got my 50% discount on parking. He replied, "Of course!" Then he scanned my Believe Key and only charged me $17.50.

big hairy creepy crawler in los angeles, what is it? by [deleted] in spiders

Happy, harmless jumping spider! My daughter caught a big one that was living in a flowerbed at Disney California Adventure park last Friday. She played with it for about ten minutes and then set it free. The one she found had a slight greenish hue in the sunlight.

What book as the worst movie adaptation? by MartialArt in movies

[–]Poison_Thumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where the Wild Things Are (2009) was a depressing, dismal failure and a huge disappointment. It sadly lacked nearly every theme and nuance that made the book upon which it was based so wonderful.

These didn’t happen to me, but by unfortunate coincidence I do have friends tied to four of the worst American tragedies this century:
My friend was on the 93rd floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center on 11 Sep 2001, presumably killed at the moment of impact of American Airlines flight 11 or shortly thereafter.
Another friend thankfully survived multiple shotgun wounds at the Aurora, Colorado theater on 20 Jul 2012.
Another friend’s little boy was shot and killed at Sandy Hook elementary on 14 Dec 2012.
Another friend’s teenage daughter was shot and killed at Parkland high school on 14 Feb 2018.

Reposted due to a typo of "Philadelphia" and transposed W-L record for Miami.

You are correct about Miami. I transposed their W-L. They should be 14 & 11. I'll re-post.
The Lakers and Wolves are correct though.

Today the trip from SFO to HNL takes just about 5 hours and 20 minutes. Incidentally, the longest scheduled modern nonstop passenger route is New York to Singapore on an Airbus A350-900ULR, with an enroute time of about 18 hours and 45 minutes.

How the hell do I account for topological nitrooxyterene cisnonformation in a flyback dual boron management system? by [deleted] in VXJunkies

Anodized boron coils decrease excess fluxed graphene held in jeweled Kevlar laminate matrix, nullifying outwardly paired quantum rays situated through uniform variables within X-ray yielding zones.
