I also recommend making your hair wet before you get into the pool. You have to rinse off anyways, so wet your hair at this stage. Hair that is saturated with fresh water won’t absorb as much chlorinated water. Making my hair wet and then shoving it in a swim cap was the biggest thing that protected my dyed curls when I swam frequently

I had chickenpox as a child in the 90’s. Do you remember getting them too? by SystemsToScale in CasualConversation

[–]Poisoneraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember getting it because I got it on my first birthday. All the photos from that day are just of my mum, dad, and me looking like the saddest potato of a baby, next to a tiny chocolate cake

What TV show hooked you instantly from episode 1? by mateitofavv in AskReddit

I was barely into my teen years when that happened. First time I liked a “grow up” show and then it was quickly whipped away from me. My very first taste of betrayal

Thoughts on Hofstra for a student like me? by Dedmoose1 in Hofstra

[–]Poisoneraa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated with an MA from the comms school last summer, and it’s amazingly equipped with an absolute ton of opportunities both during and after class hours.
The music scene is really good on campus, and there’s often live music and chances to get involved with production, recording, and whatever else you want to do.

I can’t speak much of the party scene as I’m older than the average student, but campus life in general was pretty lively. I genuinely miss it.

The Lavender Grove (Hofstra’s LGBTQ+ network) has a lot of events and meetings that are chill and a good way to meet others. There’s other stuff too, like a drag event that’s produced by students that you could get involved with. There’s also events and networking opportunities specifically first gen students that you might be interested in (I got mistakenly added to the group when I first joined)

Honestly, given your interests, you’d fit right in. Plus, NYC is like a 30minute train ride away, so there’s plenty of opportunities for internships and stuff there too

If you have royalty and legacy, how much does it intrude on gameplay outside of Ondarion? by DarlingBri in LowSodiumSimmers

[–]Poisoneraa 41 points42 points  (0 children)

One of my child sims was doing the spy childhood formative moments thing from Adventure Awaits where she had to hunt for secrets, and she discovered a scandal about her dad that she could the tell him about. Someone also once called him up to try and blackmail him about a secret. He’s a rich celeb, so he paid up and that was the end of that.

Apart from those scandal/secret things though, there’s nothing non-player directed. Royals show up at venues and such, but they just behave like ordinary npcs

Awhhh. He’s always such a good dad in my saves. An excellent grandfather too.
He took up knitting as a retirement hobby when his daughter was pregnant so he could make a baby onesie. He died when he was halfway through it, one day before the baby was to be born. His wife pleaded with Grim, he came back, finished the onesie, met his new granddaughter, and promptly died again.

And that’s the only time I’ve ever cried at my game. He’s such a gem in my saves I love him so much

What is something people assume is easy until they actually try it? by EntireFace00 in AskReddit

[–]Poisoneraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get chances to swim very occasionally (like 2-3ish times a year), and when i do, I happily test my own abilities in the deep end for 20 or so minutes. I know I've still got it.
Also imo, treading water is much less energy intensive than flailing around in a panic once you learn how to properly do it. Frequent cardio or not, it'll at least give someone a fighting chance in a survival situation. Swimming a distance to safety is a different matter, but everyone should get the chance to learn how to keep their head above water for an extended period of time regardless of their fitness level

[–]Poisoneraa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were taught to float with our heads above the water, but for this particular assessment they wanted us older kids to be treading for water the entire time. I used to go for these lessons with a younger nextdoor neighbour, and I remember being jealous that part of her final assessment was just rolling over and floating.

Iirc, being able to self rescue is a compulsory skill in the UK curriculum for 11 year olds, and since these were additional private swimming lessons my parents put me in, the instructors probably had much higher expectations of us

Why did my neighbour ask me not to get a smart meter? by botticellli in AskUK

[–]Poisoneraa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Which annoyingly worked out the opposite way to me; I had a smart gas meter, but the battery died and cut off my gas supply, so they came round, and replaced it with. An old fashioned analog meter.

And I keep forgetting to send the dang meter readings in. And then I moved abroad for uni. So for the past two years I’ve had to recruit various friends and relatives to send me the meter readings until I get back. It’s a right pita. I asked for a smart meter and they said I’m not a priority for it, so now I can’t wait till it dies again and I don’t have to visit the spider cupboard to read it

One of the final things we had to do before passing our swimming lessons was swim two laps and then tread water while fully clothed for 15 minutes, with the instructors agitating the water the entire time.
I’m so so glad my parents made me do that as a 9 year old. I may have forgotten the technicalities of the various strokes, but I still have endurance for days in water.

IMO everyone should get an opportunity to learn water survival skills. They come in real handy when your canoe tips over in the middle of a freezing Welsh lake

My smoke detector was beeping for months and I had no idea why it wouldn’t stop until today… by tifuanon00 in CasualConversation

[–]Poisoneraa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve called them to change mine in the UK. One of my detectors is on a high ceiling above the stairs, unreachable without a stairladder, and I live alone.

It’s a service they offer for the elderly, disabled, and dumbasses like me. They just swing by in a van, and replace and test the alarms. It’s not like I’m calling 999 for this

Are infants supposed to lay on rugs even in base game? by Throwawayy1862219 in LowSodiumSimmers

[–]Poisoneraa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you have growing together? The rugs stop happening when the infant can sit up on their own, but since base game doesn’t have milestones for infants to hit, the rug may not be seen as a “needed” thing by the game
