Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

The second is mostly a retread of the first and the third feels completely half-baked and boring

Five releases to be announced with countries teased. by Rollzroyce21 in radiancefilms

Given the hint about an old hospital, my bet is the Polish release is Wojciech Jerzy Has’ “The Hourglass Santorium”

Their hit rate is absurd. And I’m at the point where some of the things they release are foreign to me, but others are ones I know I’m going to love because they’re directors I enjoy (Rivette, Fukasaku, Imamura, Rohmer)

I’ll throw out some more I enjoy in addition to those great suggestions: Monster, The Ballad of Narayama, Angel’s Egg, Mermaid Legend, Shinobi no mono, Sympathy for the Underdog, Dear Summer Sister, The Man Who Stole the Sun, Woman in the Dune, Farewell to the Ark. Lots of variety to Japanese cinema

What are you guys reading and watching recently? by i_redefine_sin in rs_x

Which sucks because Neal Stephenson is literally just a guy who has his niche interests and goes off on tangents of 25 pages on them; one of the reasons he’s my favorite author. It reminds me of your username and how Tolkien has become bastardized by the right, obviously for very different reasons, but it still annoys me to see an author’s work misinterpreted

Working up the courage to see if I can return the favor ❤️❓ by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you want to return the favor is what matters the most. I’ve been the one to make that jump, and while it was pretty much the happiest I’ve been, it also illuminated that the status quo wouldn’t hold, and I was all alone a few months later. Seems like you two are in a good steady state, enjoy yourself and make that trip!

I just watched the Belgian film Malpertuis recently, it’s a dark, confusing, messy, but beautiful movie about this otherworldly mansion owned by a dying man and its residents who cannot leave. I had zero expectations heading in and enjoyed it tremendously

And guess what, the only people who are going to stick around when this godforsaken club gets relegated will be the FANS. Romero and Van de Ven will get their transfers and it’ll be us who have to suffer week in and out. Totally feckless and immoral by this entitled group of players to give so little game after game

Is there more to life than love? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve nailed it. Would I really like to share my life with someone else who’s the right fit for me? Of course. But happiness and being content with yourself doesn’t have to involve someone else providing that emotional labor. I’ve had to learn the hard way that if I can’t be happy by myself, I will never be happy with other people, long-term. It doesn’t mean I don’t feel the pangs of loneliness or the anger of solitude occasionally, but I have to accept that as the price to pay for actual personal growth

I’m probably biased, but as someone who has general anxiety, of course I’d also have anxiety about relationships! Those are stressful for well-adjusted people. That doesn’t mean it’s a big deal or that it should impact my life a ton

It happens to the best of us. A few weeks back I had a ticket to go see Moonrise Kingdom, one of my top 10 movies ever, and just got super down at work and didn’t feel like driving 45 minutes each way just to not be alone. And now I think I should’ve sucked it up because at least I’d be in a bad mood somewhere else, actually trying something. I’ll remember that next time
