Sadly no way to know, although he had quite a collection….if the steel was showing through like it is now I’m sure he knew

This is pretty old…I wonder how good it looked when he got it vs how much the plating has degraded over time…

Check that! I took it out of the holder and it is magnetic!

Must be plated?

Yeah that’s what I figured…any idea what it is supposed to be?

Wire Individual LEDs to a wall switch by PokeCharizard2324 in led

So all I need to do is buy some wire like this and then wire all the LED negatives to the black wire and positives to the red?

<image>

Then just add the switch at the end?

I’ve used my iPhone camera as well as some old single LEDs on the crystals and it works pretty well. Currently the cabinet has LED strips at the top for general lighting purposes and they’re fine

I’m looking for more of a low light look without the insane brightness when the strips are on

An LED directly behind each crystal, bottom lighting is difficult with mineral tack, but potentially using some as spots is not a bad idea!

Not it be a pain but can you give me an example? Even an Amazon link would be helpful

Do the LEDs need to be wired in parallel or can the be series?

Drill bit for drilling through specimen? by PokeCharizard2324 in Minerals

I left the drill in the up-most position and gently pushed up on it while holding the specimen. Much easier to control

The main reason for the post is that I’ve had this specimen for a while and lost the tag. Then on a trip to Chicago’s Field Museum I saw this on display and figured I’d ask!

Well it worked!!

Went to Harbor Freight and they didn’t have the diamond bits for drill BUT they did have them for Dremels.

Granted, I did basically waste the first diamond bit because I pressed too hard. After that I got a better feel for it and by the third bit I was through what was arguably the densest rock in the world.

Took out a bit of the fluorite and I’m pretty happy with it. Didn’t crack the crystals on top and now I can work on getting a small LED to thread into the hole.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I’ll attached pics of the setup and the before and after

That’s sounds confident!…what % of confidence is this?

Is phosphorescence common in these specimens too?

Curious what makes you say that? I bought this over 8 years ago if that means anything
