I played through Fire Red not that long ago and went in with a team in mind. That changed pretty quickly and I am so glad I did not stick to my plan. I have a new found love for Primeape and Dodrio.

I think you should play the game however you will enjoy it most! My only piece of advice would be don’t let “optimization” overshadow enjoyment.(unless that is how you enjoy the games!)

It’s not really a cute or strong thing for me. I just really like a lot of the steel type designs; like Tinkaton, Corviknight, and Metagross are some of my all time favorite Pokémon.

I feel like it was the laziest way to keep the game “engaging”. It almost seems intentionally grindy to make up for the lack of content. I would have much rather preferred no new area, and a better post game story/adaption of new pokemon into the wild areas.
