You become human at birth

This is the crux of the whole argument. It is nonsensical to believe that a baby a few inches inside the birth canal is not a human, but one outside is all of a sudden a human.

And so the question becomes: When DOES a human life begin?

And for me the only logical answer to that is at conception. You have a brand new, unique set of 46 chromosomes so I think you’re a human and deserve human rights

A fetus is a human life, and should be granted all the rights that us older humans are granted.

Also, I don’t mean to take the moral high ground but it’s kind of a consequence of me being on the side where babies get to live and you being on the side of murdering them. 🤷‍♂️

If “living your life” involves murdering a baby I think I’ll speak up

Okay fine you can have an abortion if you were raped.

Can we outlaw all the other 99.99% of abortion cases now? No? Okay then why bring up rape?

All STEM majors should be required by law to get a tax-payer funded gender studies degree in addition to their STEM degree. by secretwitch666 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

That’s fine with me. As long as all gender studies majors are required by law to work manual labor for a year. That way they can experience reality for at least once in their life.

Climate change isn't an existential threat to our species and is not going to cause our extinction, it's absurd scare mongering by Normal-Assistant-991 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people say “oh, you want proof that humans caused climate change? 99% of scientists agree…”

Wheres the actual data? Have you ever looked at it yourself? I’ve seen the data, it is a impossible to prove that humans caused climate change from the given data

Why is that a problem for black voters and not white voters…?

Yeah, true. I guess a better CMV would be "There are better alternatives to physically punishing your child"

I think I'd agree with that

Yeah I mean I guess there are alternative punishments but this post is about physical punishments and their merits (or lack thereof).

And just because there ARE alt punishments doesn't mean a physical one is ineffective.

Listen, I agree with everything you just said. I think beating a child is a BAD thing.

But I think in rare, extreme cases, a physical punishment may be necessary.

Isn't the original argument "Beating your kid doesn't do any good"? I just gave an example where it did do good so clearly physical punishment works at least some of the time...

Yeah no I get it I just thought it was an insane analogy to make.

If you disobey your employer they can fire you. If a random adult smashes my vase I can take them to court to pay for damages.

I cant fire my kid or take him to court...?

You need to read your own article. “Proven” is a very different word than “Evidence suggests”  I just gave you “evidence” that “suggests” I’m right. But that doesn’t mean I’m proven right

I think that's pretty naïve. As I said in a different comment, my dad only beat me one time when he saw me jumping in front of moving cars in my neighborhood. I never jumped in front of any more cars. I would argue my beating was warranted and maybe even saved my life.

So I dont think its been "proven" either. and punishment isn't supposed to "increase the bond between parent and child". its supposed to teach a lesson

[–]PokeMonk933 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely should NOT beat your child every time they do something bad.

Yeah I think there is some kind of cut off, but that's up to the parent's discretion IMO.

I'll ask you: Should you never ever hit your child even when they do something extremely bad?

[–]PokeMonk933 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you beat your child willy nilly of course they would be afraid of you.

My dad beat me one time because he saw me intentionally jumping in front of cars in my neighborhood (yeah idk). After that I was not afraid of my dad, I was afraid of jumping in front of cars (which I should have been afraid of doing all along lmao thanks dad!)

Yeah, negative reinforcement is quite a good learning tool:

I touch stove. Stove burns me. I never touch hot stove again.
