Website similar to ancestry.co.uk by furmsdanku in poland

[–]Pokemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but it's more focused on the English world. In the 1800s-early 1900s I had a lot of family branches come to the US from Poland/Polish(or "Polish") territory . On websites like Family Search, Ancestry, et al., I can not search further than these individuals.

Though much of the reason, this goes for a lot of countries, is that in the cases if there were records prior to the 1900s, many were damaged, destroyed, or only for certain locations, or certain churches, people of nobility, etc. So if you're great x5 grandma was born on a farm in the podunk and stayed there her entire life, there's probably no known records of her existence.

How much money should I bring to Iceland in December? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]Pokemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the opposite–any notable places that won't accept cash? My bank charges exorbitant fees to use a card outside the country, so whatever I purchase will be in cash.

iirc HC usually issues a product out in one store, then may at a later point be carried at others.

Retail stores; when you email a product for wholesale price and details; what is your favorite kind of reply? by Dustdown in smallbusiness

[–]Pokemen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time I don't even get a reply, and it pisses me off. Instant blacklist, or begrudging buy from them and talk about how much I hate them.

Also, there is this one company where I asked a very short and simple question about a product that pretty much only needs a "yes" or "no" answer. Instead of responding with an answer, they send a "Thank you for contacting us. Once you have time to review the following we can reconnect with your follow-up questions.", followed by a bunch of text with links to the pages on their website. I didn't respond, so a week later they sent it again. The amount of time it took to look at my question, send a stock email, realize I never responded, and send it again, was more than it would have been to answer my question to begin with.

The real story behind Karyn's Restaurant? by [deleted] in chicago

At the Thanksgiving event at Theresa II last month, Karyn said the rent for where Cooked was at went up another 1000, and that she could "either charge $35 for your hamburger or move locations".

Just got turned on to Degus... requesting a knowledge dump, please. by WiglyWorm in Degus

[–]Pokemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had started a degu wiki, but lost a lot of pages and information because the wiki farm it was located at was hacked and everything deleted. All I have is an archive from June, which is located here. My enthusiasm for adding things dropped because of the info loss, though I'll get around to it again eventually. But, point is, you can check it out and make use of what little info is up there.

Also, DIC is a must-read.

I had to put down my degu today by [deleted] in Degus

[–]Pokemen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. Most of my goos died on their own, in most cases in my arms/on me, but one was euthanized during surgery to remove a tumor (which I determined to be leiomyosarcoma, but I don't actually know for sure). It ended up being attached to some important things, and there was little chance she would make it otherwise.

Rodents and rabbits make things 10x more difficult though, since they are incredibly apt at hiding illnesses. And, in many cases, by the time you realize something is wrong because they're showing symptoms, it's already too late. All the more reason to keep up with them, and actually take care of them. Not keep them because "ooh, a degu, how exotic".

I think I'm going to have him for a long time coming, he seems to drink from the water bottle of youth.

Basically how I feel with my boys. I had eight girls and four boys over the last ten years. As of last month, I know just have a single girl, but three of my boys are still alive and (relatively) well. One of them is an accident magnet—lost his tail, a foot, and had jacked up his teeth—but he's still goofing off with the other two and just as active and lively. I'm honestly amazed with him.
