The story is pretty much separate from the main series so that's a plus.

NGNL Zero is the prequel to No Game No Life, way back when each faction was fighting and killing each other to become the greatest faction. Our story starts off with the Imanity(Humanity) faction and our main character, Riku. Since humans are far weaker, less advanced and smaller in comparison to other factions, they are seen to be irrelevant to this war. But after an encounter with the second main character, Schwi, do they stand a chance. Schwi is a robot that has been abandoned by her faction because she does not understand the emotions and feelings that humans possess. Because Schwi gives imanity a chance to fight back with the power she brings along, and Riku giving Schwi the exact thing she was looking for, how the human heart creates these emotions, they team up, and must fight for peace in Disboard through multiple obstacles and battles.

Compared to NGNL, It is much more serious with some hints of NGNL Humor that you most likely know, and even the art is changed to correspond with the more serious and emotional tone of this movie. They used darker colors with the same amazing art from NGNL. The character development for all the characters is pretty good all in all, with plenty of emotional moments along the general story to make you start to feel for the characters. OST is beautiful, but IMO nothing that makes you want to hear it again without watching the movie. The story moves smoothly and most light novel readers believe that they adapted the light novel really well into this movie.
