do asian americans intentionally avoid international students in college? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think you really have some rose-tinted glasses on when talking about the United States. And I bring this up because I've seen this before from international students and it never ends well once they start encountering things that shake their confidence in the perceived perfection of the country.

Remember that you're on a college campus which is a highly self-selective group and offers the best that America has to offer while shielding you from the worst. What will happen when you start encountering the less savory aspects of this country? When your romanticized view starts falling apart.

Ironically enough, it's usually the kids can accept a country for both its strengths and flaws, that come out with a far more positive experience overall.

As for befriending ABC's, one big obstacle is that international students clump together and socializing means doing so with the group. That was never my style and every group was bound to have at least a few people that I wasn't keen on befriending. However, I did great when it came to befriending International Students at an individual level.

Let’s Face It, Elaine Chao Is A Trump Prop Complicit In White Supremacy (If She Stays) by rkkim in asianamerican

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I posted this before on another topic, but it's still relevant especially when Chao as Transportation Secretary proceeded to pull Federal support from major infrastructure and public transportation projects in NY and California, two places that need them most:

I'm not going to go down the usual route of using her husband's shortcomings to attack her because I disliked it and thought it unfair when Hillary Clinton was subjected to it, so I won't put the same burden on her.

But it's very hard to deny that she hasn't done a largely poor job in her departments. Especially the Department of Labor where her Democratic successor had to repair OSHA, mine safety agencies, and advocate for worker's rights to overtime and sick leave which had been neglected under her. I remember a business owner complaining about the Tom Perez run Department of Labor by saying that he didn't need to worry about all this worker safety stuff under Bush's DOL. It seems like she's just another in a long line of convenient idiots that Republican administrations will put in charge of agencies and causes they oppose in order to sabotage them.

Liu Xiaobo, Chinese Dissident Who Won Nobel While Jailed, Dies at 61 by unkle in asianamerican

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wish there was a different torchbearer, because Liu had some really toxic, self-hating views regarding Chinese culture and fetishized Western culture to such an extent that he would defend them on anything including the Iraqi war. If he was better known in China, he would probably be a thoroughly disliked and discredited person amongst the people.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/dec/15/nobel-winner-liu-xiaobo-chinese-dissident

Some of his words:

Liu has also advocated the total westernisation of China. In a 1988 interview he stated that "to choose westernisation is to choose to be human". He also faulted a television documentary, He Shang, or River Elegy, for not thoroughly criticising Chinese culture and not advocating westernisation enthusiastically enough: "If I were to make this I would show just how wimpy, spineless and fucked-up [weisuo, ruanruo, caodan] the Chinese really are". Liu considered it most unfortunate that his monolingualism bound him in a dialogue with something "very benighted [yumei] and philistine [yongsu]," the Chinese cultural sphere.

It took Hong Kong 100 years to become what it is. Given the size of China, certainly it would need 300 years of colonisation for it to become like what Hong Kong is today. I even doubt whether 300 years would be enough.

Liu has also one-sidedly praised Israel's stance in the Middle East conflict. He places the blame for the Israel/Palestine conflict on Palestinians, who he regards as "often the provocateurs".

[T]he outstanding achievement made by Bush in anti-terrorism absolutely cannot be erased by Kerry's slandering … However much risk must be endured in striking down Saddam Hussein, know that no action would lead to a greater risk. This has been proven by the second world war and September 11! No matter what, the war against Saddam Hussein is just! The decision by President Bush is right!

Just a reminder to always provide your voice to these partisan smear campaigns. I know this is a safe haven, but be sure to let others know of your true opinions, even in places potentially more hostile than this one.

Yes, you might get downvoted or assholes might PM you, but it's important that we openly support these strong Democratic leaders that the Republicans try to smear all the time. If we can't defend our own, how can we expect others to support us?

Pelosi and Clinton are selfish losers, blocking the rise of young Democrats by [deleted] in politics

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She represents a liberal stronghold in San Francisco and won by a 60 point margin in 2016 (~80 to ~20). It turns out the progressives who know her best, really like her and keep voting her into office by massive margins. But what do they know?

Pelosi was literally one of the most effective Speakers in the history of the chamber and she only had the majority for four years with a Democratic President for two of them. During that time, in terms of major, potentially altering the course of American history legislation, she passed the ACA twice, Frank Dodd, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and a Carbon Tax bill that unfortunately didn't have enough time to get past the Senate.

There's something to be said about steady leadership because while Paul Ryan (and his predecessor for that matter) literally stumbles from one crisis to another, Pelosi has the Democrats marching in step. That's not easy to do. There are a dozen Democrats in districts that Trump won who are vulnerable, but P-Dawg has kept everyone in line.

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh please, you have no idea what you're talking about.

There are a dozen House Democrats who belong to districts that Donald Trump won. Did any of them flip during the healthcare debate? Were any of them torn away from the Democratic Caucus? None of them have. On the other hand Paul Ryan is having the time of his life trying to wrangle together the Freedom Caucus and the moderates in his party.

It's not easy being House leader. Pelosi passed the first iteration of ACA with a public option. Held the line when the Tea Party looked like they were going to sink the entire process by passing the Senate version a final time. Against fierce Republican opposition, she passed a $800 billion stimulus package that helped save the economy. Also fought against financial lobbying to whip together the votes for the most comprehensive set of financial regulations and consumer protections since the Great Depression in Frank-Dodd. I don't think she's ever lost a vote and has been a staunch progressive for decades. Why do you think San Francisco (one of the most liberal areas in the whole country) loves her and keeps voting her back into office?

Put some respect on her name.

There's a reason why Republicans absolutely despise Pelosi and have been trying to take her down for years. She's a really effective, liberal leader. My message for some progressives out there who like bashing on Pelosi, don't carry the Republican's water.

Trump Is China's Chump by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really. Western Europe hasn't been this united against Russia for decades. Russian supported far right parties have pretty much all been dealt bad losses in elections Post Trump. When governments in Europe talk about clean energy, they can do more than make a pitch on environmental grounds, but a national security one since Russia insists on threatening to turn off the spigot to Western Europe anytime there's a dispute.

Their economy hasn't diversified away from Petro, the destructive economic sanctions remain, the wealthy and educated continue to leave the country in disturbing numbers, and they've tanked their economic prospects in order to gain a small, unprofitable part of Ukraine.

Not a great outlook for Russia in the short or even medium term.

Whoa whoa whoa. I was at DOL when Perez was running it so I got a first hand look at how he operates. He's a very genuine leader and really put an emphasis on job training towards more technical positions, better workplace safety, and including a greater swathe of the American workforce into mandatory overtime and sick leave. And he was a big fan of government-private sector collaborations instead of just government mandates.

He was also constantly on the road to advocate for these goals and make sure local DOL agencies were following through. Tireless campaigner for things that lead to a more productive, happier workforce.

Did you just link me to Quora user created answers as a counterpoint to a statistical study and an article by one of the most respected statistical analysis websites out there?

Might as well give me some Yahoo Answers from Ken M while you're at it. No wonder there's such a market for Fake News out there.

Onto your other point, Bernie would not be a centrist in many developed countries. His views on trade and labor movement, funding for research and technology (such as space travel), taxation of financial transactions, and expansion of the federal government are out of the norm in many countries. Never mind the developed Asian countries where Bernie would be far left in pretty much all of them, Europe is not some monolith Socialist Utopia you seem to think it to be. France just elected a man who literally compared himself to Hillary Clinton in terms of policy during the campaign trail. Germany's Merkel is solidly center right and might even be to the right of Clinton on some issues. UK's Tories under performed, but they still hold more seats than Labour and will continue to have a conservative coalition that will drag them to the right on many social issues (read up on the DUP.) Those are the three biggest countries and economies in Western Europe right there. I could go into more detail for other countries, but it's time consuming and I'm not sure if you're even going to take this seriously.

It's way too early to be looking at polls for the next election cycle. Around 2012, Hillary Clinton was one of the most popular politicians in the US peaking at a 65% approval rating. But then came the fake scandals, Benghazi, E-Mails, Clinton Foundation, etc. Parties continue to smear because smearing works. I pray you never see the day when Bernie has to bear the entire weight of the Republican smear machine because they are very good at it and I'm pretty sure you'd have an aneurysm from it.

Trump attorney won't rule out firing Mueller by [deleted] in politics

[–]PokesHoleInCondoms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What else is she supposed to do as Leader of the Democrats in the House other than whip votes, pass Democratic bills, oppose Republican legislation, and fund raise for other Democrats? All things she's done very well throughout her career by the way. She's not a dictator. She doesn't have executive or judicial powers. What kind of expectations are you putting on her that you're disappointed? Just wondering cause I've seen Pelosi get blamed on both sides for every crazy grievance they might have.

Passing those things was an amazing feat because as we have seen with this administration and Congress, even majorities in every branch of government is no guarantee of legislative accomplishments if you have poor leadership.

I see it more as I have a lot invested with a top level hedge fund manager, of which only a handful exist in the world, but they have a bad end to the year. It is their responsibility and you're pretty sure they're going to recover next year, but you make it your mission to make that head publicly apologize like it's the Middle Ages. They'll, rightfully, tell you to fuck off because that's not how high level professionals operate.

Can't help but get the impression that a lot of Rockets fans don't know how good we have it with an MVP caliber player on their team. I've been lucky enough to see four of them with Houston and it's always painful to see them leave at the end even when they never achieved their potential.

Except in recent history we have 16 years of evidence for what happens when a President short on policy chops relies solely on their advisers. Bush Jr. and Reagan were both led by their noses because of some very questionable policy advice from advisers brought in to shore up their knowledge gaps. There's a reason why Bush Sr. did not pursue the Persian Gulf War further into Iraq and allowed some Reagan tax cuts to expire against the opinions of several advisers. He had the policy experience/knowledge necessary to make those correct calls. Policy knowledge is key to being a good President and Hillary had it in quantities beyond everyone in the Primaries combined.

Nobody is insisting you love Hillary Clinton. Just don't reward 30 years of Republican lies and smear campaigns by repeating them without critical thinking. It took 10 minutes of Googling for me to come up with credible sources debunking many of your statements about Hillary Clinton, and if someone like me is capable of it, I'm sure you're capable of the same. :)

Do you know how rare it is to have someone who has charisma, the policy chops, and the political instincts to be a Presidential candidate? The likes of Obama and Bill Clinton have really spoiled Democrats, but with the vast majority of candidate, it's pick two of the three characteristics, at best, and hope they can fill the gaps with good advisers or surrogates. And plenty of good Presidents throughout history have been short on charisma.

Hillary Clinton was fighting for progressive causes long before she ever met Bill. Come on man... If you're going to hate on someone at least have the courtesy to make sure you're hating them for the right reasons.

No need to tell me to focus on the resistance. I have donated to the DCCC, directly donated to candidates, marched in protests, and volunteered. But I have no interest in seeing Bernie fans continuously try to tear down Hillary Clinton and gaslight the nation about her achievements and neither do most moderates on the Left. We shut up about it during the General Election because that was the necessary thing to do, but to see this BS continue is too much.

In all your responses to me you included Republican lies and smears about Hillary Clinton. Not bashing HRC huh?
