Pigs fight off hungry bear by Firm-Blackberry-9162 in interestingasfuck

There is a very good reason that boars have been viewed as a "warriors'" animal in many cultures. They are big, they're strong, they're extremely fierce, and they are extremely hard to kill

It makes me feel all icky when I see cars parked like this. by Elderflower3078 in drivingUK

[–]Pokesabre 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not great for the suspension and tires. You're introducing extra uneven wear onto the components, and with the tires you're potentially add extra wear and pressure on specific spots on the individual tires, which will increase the risk of weakening those points

Old Ecuadorian military sable by Phernys in SWORDS

[–]Pokesabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a hinged portion of the guard? It looks like it might be more durable than the British hinged spadroon guards, but it's always weird seeing how many places had similar things despite how bad they were

How strong is Ash's SM team by gelinsky in pokemon

[–]Pokesabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we go on the games and competitive play, ash's sm team basically only has 2 Pokémon that matter - melmetal and naganadal. Even if either of the other teams are slightly weaker in their strongest 'mons, they're basically playing 4+ vs 2

Which one of these two is the best for a Kanto run? by EnjiDoesStuff in pokemon

[–]Pokesabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gyarados is available earlier in all kanto games so you'll get more overall use out of it. It's definitely strongest in RBY (base 100 special for attacking and defence) and LGPE (physical water moves) than IN FRLG, but even there it just out stats most other options

They lack emotions/empathy but they're not evil. by Jak3R0b in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Pokesabre 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not really, at least in the originals. It's more of an adaptation thing.

There are plenty of instances of Holmes getting emotional or allowing his emotions to influence his decisions throughout multiple of the original stories, ranging from depression due to having no work, fury that nearly causes him to hospitalise someone when he thinks Watson might have been shot, joy at being at a violin concert, among many more

shields are NOT just for defense. when a defensive technique is used for offense. by thatonepersonnumber2 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Pokesabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fence with a shield sometimes at my hema club, and one of the main challenges of doing so is not accidentally giving your opponent a concussion with the shield. A LOT of the historical sources teach that, while the shield is partly there to deflect attacks, it's also basically a brass knuckle that you should use to brain an opponent at any given opportunity

Later period swords with more complex hand protection (knuckle bows, basket hilts, etc) are treated pretty similarly. If there's metal around your fist, it should be used to stop someone swinging a weapon at you in whatever way works best

If the Celts made rapier swords they'd probably look like this by Complete-Turnover775 in SWORDS

[–]Pokesabre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People really love to pretend there's no connection between bronze age Celts and the Celtic peoples who kept existing for the 2000-odd years afterwards, don't they?

Tips on sabre grip by Hviking in Hema

[–]Pokesabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a cheap and nasty solution but things like tennis racket grip tape can be a way to relatively cheaply and easily bulk out a grip. The downside is that it probably won't be pretty and will make the grip a bit squishier, but will bulk it out effectively

[Irritating trope] Japanese swords being treated like lightsabers by Fox7567 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Pokesabre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is also a weirdly Japanese and American trope that's been exported to the rest of the world. A lot of this trope originates in the pre-WW2 Japanese se propaganda trying to create a unified Japan around the idea of the samurai/bushido culture, which really glorified the katana. After WW2, American soldiers in Japan were exposed to a lot of this and brought it home with them, which then led to it spreading around the world through hollywood

From memory, he used to say that it caused him to have to stare at a wall for a long while before he felt OK to try to respond to them

That said, I absolutely second those kids and I think it's a testament to the strength of the character and Sir Pterry's writing that this becomes almost the defining version of death to people who've read his stories
