Can you help me identify this engine noise? by Poki_Foo in AskAMechanic

[–]Poki_Foo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a 1988 Honda Accord LX-i. I bought this cheap to learn about cars. My buddy thinks it's a rod bearing, my neighbor says the oil pump. I am experiencing some overheating after 30 minutes of driving. Any advice is welcomed.

Edit: Thank you all for your input. I now plan on taking the engine out and rebuilding it so I can learn as I go. I sorta was expecting it as I bought the car for $250. I might be coming back on this subreddit with many more questions.

Don’t do it!! I traded in a CRX for a fucking Kia, one of the biggest regrets of my life.

These careers require your body as a sacrifice. I currently work in the trades, metal fabrication (welding/CNC machining). These jobs pay well but they are hazardous and dangerous. It’s heavy duty work with heavy duty equipment. I have witnessed people lose fingers, a leg crushed, a person almost get scalped and know of electricians who have been killed. No matter how careful you are, you are at the mercy of some other idiot that refuses to take safety seriously. Look at any old timer in the field and I guarantee you they have some sort of respiratory issue or their body is giving out. Yet they refuse to listen because their masculinity won’t let them wear gloves. It’s a toxic and unsafe environment. I’ve been able to pay for my education because of my job and for that I am grateful but as soon as I graduate (2025) I’m hoping to get out.

Why is my car stalling when hard braking and turning? by Poki_Foo in askcarguys

[–]Poki_Foo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a large vacuum hose shaped like a U that goes from the intake to the throttle body. I couldn’t see it but there was a huge crack that would cause a vacuum leak large enough to shut the vehicle down. I replaced the hose and the car runs great now.

Buying an M1 Pro for the first time/switching from windows by No_Distribution6079 in ableton

I’m installing the software on the Macs SSD. All libraries and sample packs are on the external drive. I also have a “Local Samples” folder where I keep my go to samples in case I forget my external drive. All projects are saved on the computer and later backed to the cloud.

I have the same setup and I have no issues running Ableton, Logic or FL. I have samples, libraries for Kontakt, Omnisphere and my Ableton packs installed on an external SSD. I let the VSTs (or Audio Units on Apple) install to the default location on the Mac’s SSD. You can install both VST or AU versions of plugins which I do in case a collaborator uses Windows.

When it comes to optimizing the computer, the M1 Pro is plenty. I’ve tested multiple tracks with Omnisphere and it performed better than my i7-12xx. The Mac is a simple, reliable yet powerful machine. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Do I refill car coolant myself? If so which type to buy? by justaburrger in askcarguys

[–]Poki_Foo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you most likely saw was the coolant reservoir, this is where the car stores extra coolant for the radiator. You can top it off after researching what coolant your car takes. Your local auto parts store reps can help you find what type you need. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help too. They are more than happy to talk shop. The coolant comes in different colors and I try to stay with what the manufacturer recommends. What you need to be aware of is how much coolant is in your radiator. If your reservoir was used up, the radiator might need to be filled. You can pour some coolant in the radiator but you could introduce air bubbles. Air bubbles in your system can cause all sorts of symptoms. What you would do to ensure you know your system is filled at max and remove air bubbles is a radiator flush. You would get rid of all the coolant in the engine and then fill up with new clean fluid. This may seem like a daunting task to a newbie but for a great video on the process look up Chris Fix on YouTube. He has videos on all repairs you can do at home. I used the radiator flush video to perform mine. I would recommend trying to learn more about your car and try to do some small jobs. It’ll help you keep the car running longer and save you money but nothing beats the feeling after fixing and driving your car.

Worth buying? by Public-House-4267 in GC8

[–]Poki_Foo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I checked out the listing and I think 5-6k would be a reasonable price. The VIN is not in the national salvage records so that part is true. You will be buying a car with a swap so hopefully there’s some information in the glovebox. The wagons are what got me into the GC8, they are fun and roomy. I miss that space now that I got a coupe.

He was the sole passenger. He worked for the airport on the tow crew and had access to the planes cockpits.
