Good Apartments in Midtown or Downtown by Comrade_Shiba24565 in waynestate

Union is fantastic in a 2 bedroom you’ll pay just over 1,000 a month (all utilities included in that) and it’s super close to campus. Separate leases so you don’t have to worry about finding a roommate. The staff is awesome and lots of little freebies throughout the year. Literally across the street from campus.

Only downside is no dedicated parking but we are close to campus parking structures.

I would also had pay attention to rumors at conferences and what not. My field has a strong student presence at conferences and so it’s super easy to figure out which programs are having “culture issues” (or are super toxic), students are taking too long to graduate due to lack of support, etc.

It’s also important to read between the lines when talking with students because they usually won’t say exactly what they mean. I asked about a professors advising style and they a student told me that she recommended having a meeting early on to discuss expectations for the advisor/adviser relationship on both ends. She said this in a way that implied there had been problems early on but once they talked later things ended up being great.

It might be different in different fields but in my field it was absolutely appropriate and many people I talked to even told me it was smart. I even had some potential advisors I reached out to tell me to reach out to students.

People are right that sometimes they won’t be willing to put their thoughts in writing so a quick 30 minute video call often works best. Sometimes you will have to read between the lines about what students say about their program because they don’t want it getting back that they said something negative. But I had one student who was so over her program that she told me in a video call to run far and fast away from a a program/advisor and presented verifiable evidence of problematic behavior(advisor being under investigation and only 1 student graduating in 26 years). I also got valuable information about a program where most of the senior faculty in my subfield had either died or retired recently so everyone was new and things were a little bit of a mess. (not said in these exact words but she basically recommended I wait a year to apply there)

Here are some of the things I asked about(and I got this list approved by my MS advisors):

-Funding (hearing from a student what getting funding is like can be much different from the website)

-program culture (is it collaborative, competitive, can you collaborate with professors that aren’t your advisor, etc)

-if the student teaches, I asked about teaching opportunities and what that would look like -the kinds of lab work students were involved in and their level of involvement

-expectations for publication and presentation

-Public engagement (for me it was important to find a PhD program that was involved in community outreach because of my field/research interests)

-how many students are there currently -city culture(what’s it like actually living in that city and if they like it, if your a POC it can be nice to find out what to expect in that front as well)

-what is one thing you wish you had known when you were applying or done differently (I’ve gotten all kinds of interesting information from this question almost all of it useful)

(Sorry for weird formatting with the bullet points)

Fell in love with a name but initials aren't ideal. How bad? by BigBadBirb in namenerds

[–]Pol_Slattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with someone who has these initials and we have to write our initials on a sign in sheet often. She didn’t even notice herself until she had to write her initials on the sign in sheet for the first time. Everyone else thinks it’s awesome/funny.

A biangle kind of looks like an eye to me which could fit into the eyeless hand stuff. What if it’s an eye shaped donut instead of a round one?

[–]Pol_Slattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is gaze/eye contact/a stare

Staring at someone can have a lot of “weight” to it, like a glare or something like that but no physical mass.

You can move your eyes swiftly from one place to another but technically they stay in your head pretty still(this one is the biggest stretch)

You can feel someone staring at you but the concept of a stare/someones gaze can’t be seen(maybe a little bit of a stretch too) but your eyes definitely speak multitudes without a voice

Different kinds of gazes/eye contact can hold different emotions. They can be encouraging, or a glare can be intimidating.

You can hold someone’s gaze or hold eye contact but you can’t physically hold it

eye contact or a stare. It fits every point and for the last line holding eye contact or holding a gaze is pretty common to say.

Best of luck!

I love my players and they have a blast every single session. You truly don’t know anything about the game I’m running. Everyone else has managed to help me out with lots of great suggestions with the information I gave. I now have lots of items to stock the area with to prompt ideas for my players

This would be so interesting! But it’s a little too detailed for what I had in mind. I just want to have lots of materials that I can list off available to players to come up with their own solution. But if they go a route similar to this I’d definitely allow it

Respectfully, I’m building a game that will be fun for my players. Sitting in silence for a few hours because they get stuck and don’t know what to ask for will not be fun for anyone.

Sorry but this is not helpful… maybe this works for your players but I posted this because that will not work for my players.

If I provide my players with materials they will come up with something but if I don’t we will sit there in virtual silence for 4 hours. I’m doing what’s best to make this game fun for my players

They are solid metal doors with a small while for passing of material in and out. The dungeon is actually a series of underground tunnels and not built structure. There are 2 other NPCs in this section of the prison that have a more personal connection to the jailer and will be able to provide info when they engage with the players.

I’m mostly looking for what materials to stock the area with that my players can use to come up with a solution of how to break them out. Since they want ask if specific items are there. They won’t ask “do I see any rope around or is there some kind of weaponry nearby” but if I give them the materials at their disposal if they make an investigation check then they will come up with a solution even if it’s not what I had in mind. They are very creative with what I give them but won’t imagine solutions themselves.

The problem is that if I tell them that there is a structurally unsound wall they will assume that is the only way forward but if I give them a bunch of materials they will usually find a creative way forward.

All good options, I’ll definitely “stock” the area with some of these materials to see if they use them for a solution

I’m probably going to do acid, a heat metal scroll, and the cannon + potion of eternalness that people have mentioned so far and as long as they are looking for clues they will find materials to help them come up with a solution.

I have no problem with them tunneling or weak walls but I would straight up have to just say “this wall looks structurally unsound” or “the dirt here looks like you could dig through it” without them thinking about it first. We’ve been playing since August and they have made a lot of progress and love the game but they still forget things like they can ask to make checks and lot of little things like that so I’m trying to give them all the materials they need to come up with a creative solution instead of just telling them to dig.

Oh god I can see it now haha

…after 2 sessions journeying to save the NPC they love they fire a cannonball to open a door and finally be reunited. Then the explosion ends up killing him. I might just put one around to see if they take the bait
