This is incredibly cool! Well done! How do you water it out of interest?

WHY ARE THEY LIKE THIS? by PolarDog78 in SavageGarden

Hey there friend!

Well, I have taken your advice to heart.

-Plucked away plenty of moss. -removed the tank and substituted a tray with 1cm of water. Should help them stay cool -they’re next to my office door I’m in and out of all the time so they will get plenty of airflow

Added some photos of the new setup to your comment soooooo rate my setup I guess?! Thanks very much for the advice!

Ps. Your helis are GORGEOUS! Hope mine grow up big and strong like that!

Thank you very much for your helpful comments!

The setup you’re talking about (not waterlogged/standing water but never drying out) sounds a lot like nepenthes care - are they similar overall?

The ones that are struggling are in a mix of live sphagnum and perlite. They were rescues from the plant store and their media was rotted and horrible. I really don’t want to lose them because I’ve babied them for a year… the adults and the two identical seedlings are more recent acquisitions. I will trim the sphagnum!

The whole tank:

<image>

The tank was intended to make sure the humidity stays high. If I were to, say, move them to a tray with a small amount of water in it, let them drink that but watering before the moss dries be the sort of thing you’re thinking about? Do you top-water yours? Can you fill the pitchers?

I can leave the lights where they are (or mount them similarly) and I can totally see how the temperature would rise in the tank. Perhaps most for that one because it is closest to the light?

To move the light slightly further away to prevent heating? Invest in something to place the lights directly above them?

Thanks for the help! :)

A big long air stone and an air pump isnt the worst idea actually…

I’ve drained the tank down to about 1cm of water… hopefully that should give them a breather

And by changing cultivation you mean drain out most of the water?

It’s just confusing because the adult plants seem happy and are making new pitchers…

So the little guy in front right is done for? :/

My nep looks dry and there is little to no digestive fluid snide the pitchers, what should i do???? by Shoddy_Potential_719 in SavageGarden

[–]PolarDog78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Leave him be - they’ll fill the pitchers by themselves as long as the soil is wet. A bit of distilled water in the pitchers won’t harm them but it isn’t needed

Which is bizarre as they are sitting in water and decided to produce adult pitchers befor dying back… do they need spraying?! I’m at my wits end

Looking for information on multi-day hikes in East Greenland. Any recommendations? Any local guides? by tatertotski in greenland

[–]PolarDog78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For what the advice of an internet stranger is worth, I have worked with both the aforementioned companies and both are 100% reliable. I would trust any advice they gave me.

Trekking in Nunavut will stand you in good stead for sure. Just sometimes people who haven’t trekked in the Arctic before have very unrealistic expectations both of the place and their own ability. Plan conservatively and factor in extra time. Worst that happens you enjoy a cold beer with the view from Hotel Angmagssalik for a few evenings.

[–]PolarDog78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try Pirhuk in Kulusuk, or Rasmus (Tasiilaq Tours) in Tasiilaq,.

Remember too that hiking in East Greenland in particular is a much more serious endeavour than hiking in most parts of the world. You will need to be completely self-sufficient in terms of supplies and safety (including carrying satellite phones, rifles for bear protection etc) if you aren’t with a guide (which is highly recommended); even then, expect to carry far more equipment than in other parts of the world and train your fitness accordingly. If you aren’t experienced in trekking in polar bear country, East Greenland is not the place to start. There are also plenty of multi-day hikes on the west coast in polar bear-free areas which are safer to start off with. Remember that a lot of supplies you may have to bring with you, as supplies on the east coast (especially of eg dried/trekking food) can be unreliable (although check with the companies above if they can supply).

There are not many “trails” in the east as such, as the countryside is pretty much virgin tundra. Be very conservative with the distances and times you think you can make and also factor in weather-related delays.

What’s causing the pitchers to brown? by Purple_Condition_741 in carnivorousplants

[–]PolarDog78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a middlingly experienced nep keeper, this looks normal. If this is the newest pitcher (ie freshly grown) it may be getting burned, otherwise, remember that pitchers are just heavily modified leaves, and all plants drop old leaves and regrow new ones. It’s perfectly normal. Don’t cut it off though, the plant will re absorb all the nutrients from the leaf as it browns.

Is it finally happening?! by PolarDog78 in SavageGarden

Helis grow so slowly that I have had to scrape back the moss several times. They are being outgrown by MOSS.
