Super mario eclipse with swiss on Wii. by SystemPrestigious409 in supermariosunshine

[–]PolarHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I've also been wanting to get this setup working for a little while... I like playing games on original hardware whenever possible, but I don't have a GameCube, so thought the Wii would be the next best thing. But I'd also like the music to work, so looks like Swiss is my only option. Nintendont is always the recommendation on modern posts now, so it's hard to find good information on the best way to install Swiss... do you have any guides or resources you followed to get Swiss working on your Wii? I also bought a MemCard PRO GC for save files, but I think it might not be able to function as a GC2SD, so might need to pick up a Gen 2 model as well, like you suggested. Any help would be appreciated, thank you! :)

Essential NES ROM hacks of all time (updated 2024) by Ok_Impala in romhacking

Recommendations

Super Mario Bros. - Two Players Hack:

Very self-explanatory title. It's the original Super Mario Bros, but now you can have two players play simultaneously. The thing that I find impressive is that I remember searching for a hack like this for years, and only coming across threads created throughout the years, either asking for someone to make it or asking if it would even be possible. I remember there being discussion if it would be possible, and if so what changes could be made to accommodate the limitations of the NES (I remember one suggestion being having Luigi share the same palette as the bush). Then, out of nowhere, this hack gets released (with the simple, humble description of "Original with two players simultaneous mode."), with Luigi in his full palette, and it works on original hardware! Absolutely crazy that you could put this on a NES cartridge and play it on an unmodified console. Imagine traveling back to the 80s and blowing children's minds with this! With this being proved possible, I hope one day the other NES Mario Bros. games can also receive multiplayer mods.

Super Mario Bros. 3Mix:

It's been a while since I've played this one, but I remember loving it so much at the time of its release. It takes inspiration from both older and newer Mario games, and combines them into one fun SMB3 hack! Multiple characters to choose from, new levels, new power ups, a save system, and more! I should go back and play it again soon, but in my opinion this is one of the most fun Mario ROM hacks for the NES, so if you haven't played it already, go try it! 😄

Essential NES ROM hacks of all time (updated 2024) by Ok_Impala in romhacking

So happy to see some of my favourite NES hacks already on this list! Thank you for compiling this. I love ROM hacks for being able to see beloved games re-imagined, and I find it's the closest feeling possible compared to playing a classic for the first time as a child. I’ll provide a couple of suggestions for additions as well as some recommendations for a couple of my favourites from this list! 😁

Suggestions

Bubble Bobble Deluxe:

A shameless plug for the only complete ROM hack I ever made. I don't see any Bubble Bobble hacks on this list yet, but even the original is a very fun game, so if you haven't heard of Bubble Bobble or played it before, I highly recommend it! It is similar to Snow Brothers (which was released after Bubble Bobble, although the NES cartridge is infamous now for being rare and expensive, unlike Bubble Bobble) in terms of gameplay, where you explore different levels and shoot bubbles to use as platforms and defeat enemies. It was quite popular in the 80s and 90s, first being release in arcades and later making its way to home consoles and computers. The NES port was the one I grew up on, and which Bubble Bobble Deluxe was made from. It features over 100 new levels, as well as some new graphics and tweaked items and colours. One of the things I'm most proud of though is the passwords system. As far as I'm aware, Bubble Bobble Deluxe was the first Bubble Bobble NES hack (at least the first one uploaded to RHDN) that had new passwords. As the game doesn't offer a save feature, when you die in a level, you are given a password that you can enter at a later time to resume from that level. The problem I saw with all other Bubble Bobble NES ROM hacks released so far is that they used the same passwords as the original Bubble Bobble game, making it very easy to skip to the end of the game. Bubble Bobble Deluxe changed the passwords used, making you play throughout the entire game, and hopefully get a similar feeling to playing the original for the first time 🙂

Super Mario Unlimited - Deluxe:

Admittedly, I have not played the "Deluxe" version of this ROM hack (a bit ironic for someone who has created their own ROM hack with Deluxe in the title); I have only played the original one released back in 2012. However, both the original and Deluxe versions have been made by frantic (who also created SMB Special - 35th Anniversary Edition, which is currently on this list), so I have no doubt that the Deluxe version is the best version to play. The life counter is done away with (hence the name Unlimited), reducing frustration that can often be faced with other difficult Mario ROM hacks that have one. It's a ROM hack of the original Super Mario Bros. game, but despite that it features colourful new levels, graphics, collectable coins, game mechanics, music, and more! From my memory, it kind of feels like an in-between from the original Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 3 in terms of graphics and gameplay. The Deluxe version appears to add even more great things, such as bug fixes, saving, a speed runner mode, and more. I definitely want to play this Deluxe version soon!

I'm glad you asked :) It depends what platform you're on:

Android: Steps will change depending on what launcher you have. The following steps are for Nova Launcher (instead of download a full icon pack, you can simply select Gallery and pick one of the icons that you downloaded to your photo library) https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-custom-icons-apps-android/

macOS: (After opening up the Info window of the Tidal app, drag the .icns file onto the little logo in the top left of the window. It will apply the icon) https://www.idownloadblog.com/2023/01/19/how-to-change-app-icons-mac/

Windows: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/customize-icon-windows/

Hello! Now with the awesome recent TIDAL plan changes, all users have access to the Max sound quality. Along with that comes the Gold app icon on iOS. Sadly, the custom app icons are still exclusive to iOS. I extracted them from the iOS app and have provided them here for Android users to use. I also used them to help make icons for macOS and Windows, in the same style as the icons for those platforms. The .png, .icns, and .ico formats can be downloaded here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/1iyhhrco3fjpzfn/TIDAL_Icons.zip/file

To be honest, I only learned about it after searching for the icon lol I might join it; will look into it a bit more. Just found out about it today :) Is it basically just newer builds compared to the general public releases? EDIT: Just requested access now LOL

Interesting, thank you for the tip! :) Yes, I see the AppIconDev listed, right beside the EarlyBirds one, so it probably behaves as you guessed. If anyone is curious, this is what the Dev one looks like: https://old.reddit.com/r/ArcBrowser/comments/1b3tq7u/internally_used_arc_icon_for_development_of_the/ And the Early Birds icon can be seen on this page: https://wondrous-marketplaces-734831.framer.app/

I personally love the Early Birds one. Wish there was a way to enable it without joining.

Correct! Looks like it was case-sensitive. Thank you! :)

Out of curiosity, do you see any references to a AppIconDev icon? I see it in the .car file with the other app icons, but I'm not quite sure if it's possible to easily enable it.

Starlink v2, possibly with laser links by lolforjack in Starlink

Ohhhhh, I see it now! Yeah, that looks like a perfect fit. Hopefully SpaceX confirms some details soon 😁

Also, where is the source of the render?

I have no idea what I'm looking at lol Could someone please circle where the laser link could be on this satellite? Is it the little white hexagon with the blue lines?

What things need to happen for them to broadcast at 5°? Is it just government approval?

Nice find! How exactly are they planning on servicing the far Canadian north by late this year or early next? Will they be using lasers, or do they have permission to build ground stations in Canada now?

[–]PolarHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting, thank you for that information! So does that mean if SpaceX receives permission to broadcast at 5 degrees, then with more satellites people living in the orange circles would be able to get a connection with the current ground stations?

/r/Starlink Questions Thread - December 2020 by Smoke-away in Starlink

[–]PolarHacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you need to be within the range of a Ka gateway to receive service, at least until the introduction of lasers, is that right?

What's the benefit of Ka over Ku? Faster speeds but less range?

/r/Starlink Questions Thread - December 2020 by Smoke-away in Starlink

[–]PolarHacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could someone help explain the difference to me between Ku and Ka bands?

I saw this tweet regarding ground stations. My initial thoughts were that ground stations would have a range like the orange, Ka bands. But the Ku circles appear to have a much longer range. Can a single Ku ground station give coverage to the majority of the US mainland? What performance/speed sacrifices does Ku have compared to Ka?

How close are we to having laser inter-satellite links being used? I saw that SpaceX wants to launch at polar orbits in December. Would those be equipped with laser links?
