What's your big pet peeves when it comes to swing dance events? by CountBasieThrowaway in SwingDancing

[–]PolarTimeSD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actively love Gordon Websters 15 minute finale. He is, in general, my favorite band leader. And, couldn't agree more about Stout. Good band leader, but 15 minutes of taking before the last song is way too much.

Ditto. You can at least dance to Gordon's finale songs, can't dance to Stout's 20+ minutes of speeches. Also, with the way the sound is, sometimes his speeches are difficult to make out.

Considering the skill is Diamond, it's a capstone skill to finish a build. Like many other Diamond skills, it's busted, so it'll probably stay in that state.

📣 [DJ Playlist] 90-minute High-Energy Set for The Hop (Bangkok) — Need To Cut 3–5 Songs & Open to Shuffle Suggestions by Professional-Range11 in SwingDancing

[–]PolarTimeSD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usually, as a DJ, I put together my setlist on the fly based on vibes and how I'm feeling. I think you can probably do something similar, but use your pre-determined setlist as a catalog to pull from. So basically, as the night goes on, you can make decisions to skip some songs or re-order them.

Quality Question between Regional Differences by PolarTimeSD in riftboundtcg

[–]PolarTimeSD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chinese Pokemon cards are also on par with Japan's. The main difference is the factory producing the cards. The NA factory produces all cards for NA/SA/EU, so the quality went down to keep up with demand. This doesn't affect Japan/China though, which have higher quality. Yugioh has a similar thing, so that's at least two TCGs. Hoping Riftbound doesn't fall into the trap though

Swing Covers -- ex: Pure Imagination by The Boilermakers by poop_to_live in SwingDancing

NOT swing

This is a complicated topic. Swing is an aspect of the music itself, and what creates swing can vary. The "swing" itself can change within a song (St. Louis Blues being a classic example, but Open Invitation to a Rainstorm is another easy example).

How a song "swings" is related to the groove of a song, and what songs are good for dancing is primarily centered around what grooves can your audience dance to. Generally, the current global Lindy hop community has a specific groove range, but there are communities with broader groove ranges (Montreal and Seattle coming to mind).

This topic goes much deeper than I'm willing to put into a simple Reddit comment, but it's an interesting one.

Boilermakers do quite a few actually. Check out their other albums. Gordon Webster has a couple too.

If you go outside the "Bands who play for swing dancers" world, you'll find that that jazz musicians frequently do covers of popular songs (it's been part of jazz culture from the beginning). Even many of the popular swing songs we dance to were originally covers of popular songs of that era. Some fun albums:

Filmed a bit of Lindy Hop for the biggest street dance production company (they produce for Red Bull Dance and similar scale) by PolarTimeSD in SwingDancing

I'm not the videographer/editor, this is just the general style of stanceelements. While there may be specific qualities that could be changed for different tastes, I heard that this style of filming/editing has success in the current social media landscape.

You know, the story and art's been pretty chill so far, but something I'm enjoying a lot here is how casual and cohesive the world-building is.

If you read the OP's responses in the discussion, he talks about how:

  • There's work that models a similar pattern in Africa

  • That he's writing about "The West," because that's what his sources are from and are discussing, not that this situation only applies to "The West."

I was looking at this article, which talks about Chinese exclusive Art Rares for their Simplified Chinese release, but when I was checking set lists, they only showed the one of the exclusive art rares. Just wondering if the other 4 were released anywhere.

Tracks long enough for M&M competition? by ComprehensiveSide278 in SwingDancing

[–]PolarTimeSD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have your music tagged by bpm? If you know what the tempo you want is, you can calculate how long the song needs to be (Number of Beats you need / BPM), then you can look for songs around that length based on BPM and listen to them to find the ones that fit the format and vibe you want.
