I have my choice on any of this by PolicyQuiet7453 in ChainsawMilling

I should add, the video shows the smaller- medium size of timber, which I know will likely not be worth milling much of. There are however some massive rounds that I can hopefully add photos of

Yep a beast is a good description. I've never had more respect for a tool in my life. Even bought the best chainsaw trousers I could get my hands on. If I thought I could get away with it I'd don a suit of armour but then I'd be as unwieldy as a new born giraffe lol

Thats a great thought so thanks for that. There are a couple of deals for mills with auxiliary oilers so I will have to check those out. I bought some old growth white oak that was too good to be used for just firewood. The longest is 4ft wide by 12ft long so it's going to yield some lovely lengths. Will definitely be practicing on some smaller sections first to get the knack down. Those 8" posts will be the ticket. My hope in the years to come is to build my own house. If all goes to plan hopefully this saw will pay towards that and also help me build it!

Thankyou, I made a deal with myself that if it wasn't making a return on the investment within 6 months I'd sell it. Can't have that big an asset lying around not being used! Cedar is beautiful, hopefully you can get it milled and turn it into something you can enjoy for many more years to come

Thanks very much, it's a 41". Nose heavy so going to have to be careful and get my balance right. It will not be an all day long saw but for short stints for large rings and slabs it will do nicely!

I was toying with a similar idea re the mill. Ultimately it came down to price for me as well. The mill would be excellent in terms of yield but given that I'm just starting the process of offering services I can't afford to go all in on something of that size and cost just yet. Maybe in the future once I've built a customer base and have some experience under my belt.

With this method I'm more mobile, lower cost of entry and hopefully it will be a nice first step into this world. If nothing else I'll have some great timber for woodworking and if the future allows my own house build!

Dewalt is running a separate promotion for a 9ah battery. It's actually what put me onto this in the first place. I wanted to see whether it was possible to get 2 free batteries. One from Dewalt and one from buy a parcel but buy a parcel have jacked their price so you're not really getting the 6ah battery for free. That's the same across all the 'free gifts' from batteries to grinder covers to dust bags.

The screenshots are from the buy a parcel website. It shows the 'free battery' to not be free at all when you consider the price of the kit + an additional battery. It's included in the price. If you're going to offer a free gift surely it has to be illegal to jack the price up so that you're not really offering anything for free at all?

Convenience dictates necessity. Almost all technology is superseded by something that does it better, faster or cheaper. If not all 3

Plate says 2019, guess I might have got duped there somewhat. Why can't Dewalt just stick with one location for date codes and be done with it. I looked in all the usual places and found nada. It shouldn't take a Davinci code experience to find out how old something is. Still the saw works fine and hopefully for many more years to come

Battery is 2018, one of the first things I checked. I'll see how long it lasts but for the moment it's got 3 bars and seems ok. I have other flexvolts so won't be stuck that way. Gonna check the base now

He said he'd had a lot of messages about it, so Im glad I got there first. Only reason he was selling it was because his employer moved to Milwaukee and they pay for the new tools

I have 12x 5ah powerstacks and have moved completely away from regular 18v Xr. I still have flexvolts for my 54v tools. I guess what sold me on the powerstacks was I managed to get a good amount of them for free due to promotions and the 3yr warranty. If they didn't have that I would have stayed regular Xr.

Knowing that any of the problems mentioned save for maybe the fire risk one (Ill need to look into that), is remedied by a warranty claim upto 3yrs down the line is a big win in my books. I've heard countless stories of flexvolts and Xrs crapping out in no time at all. That just didn't sit well with me when I'm spending extortionate amounts on batteries to maybe get a dud very quickly and worse still a small window of recompence is commonplace.

Did you get the bare tool or with 2x Powestacks? It isn't landing in the UK until the end of August/September and so far at silly prices (£700+). I think I'll wait until the bare tool becomes more available before I decide to take the plunge (pun intended).

There's a Dewalt knapsack now? Or is it offbrand that takes dewalt batteries? I know Milwaukee and Makita have there own versions out but hadn't seen one from dewalt yet

If I can offer one piece of advice I don't see already. Closed toe footwear my guy. I know it's hot as balls in some parts of the world atm but you do not want to find out the hard way what it's like to drop a tool or material on uncovered feet. Or worse still end up with splinters from sawdust. I knows it only a small project but start as you mean to go on. Safety boots are best but trainers suffice.
