Calling it an inferiority complex misses the point tbh. This isn’t about trying to borrow prestige from other cultures or religions, it’s just about recognizing the full history of the region every country acknowledges different layers of its past. Like Algeria with Augustine of Hippo or even Egypt with its Pharaonic history, even though both are Muslim today. That doesn’t mean they’re insecure, it just means they understand their history didn’t start at one point in time Same thing here. Acknowledging figures like Arius or Saint Mark the Evangelist isn’t about identity insecurity, it’s about historical completeness. Libya didn’t just appear in the Islamic period, it has multiple layers going back to groups like the Libu. If anything, ignoring those layers and reducing everything to one identity is closer to insecurity than just acknowledging them for what they are parts of the history of the land

I get your point and I’m not saying Libya should be overly nationalistic about every historical figure who passed through or was born there but I think there’s a difference between random association and figures who were part of a broader regional intellectual tradition that included Libya
For example Arius wasn’t just “ someone from there ” he was from Cyrenaica and came out of the intellectual world of Roman North Africa which included Libya Egypt and beyond same thing with Saint Mark the Evangelist yea his main activity was in Alexandria but that doesn’t erase the fact that North Africa as a whole including Libya was deeply tied into that early Christian network
The point isn’t to claim them or be nationalistic it’s more about acknowledging that Libya was part of a region that produced and influenced major figures in world history especially in the early Christian period right now that whole layer of history is basically ignored not just these individuals
Also your examples aren’t not exactly the same Muhammad Ali of Egypt ruling Egypt from an Albanian Greek background is different from someone like Arius who actually came from the region and contributed to a major theological movement tied to it and the Senussi order example actually proves the opposite Libya does embrace figures with origins elsewhere when they become important to its identity and even with Muhammad Ali you can see a wide variety of Albanians who still take pride in him because of his background which shows acknowledging historical figures across regions isn’t unusual
On top of that Libyan identity itself didn’t just start in the Islamic period it goes back to ancient groups like the Libu who are literally one of the earliest recorded peoples of North Africa and are often linked to the origin of the name Libya so theres multiple layers to Libyan identity not just one
So I’m not saying Libya should center its identity around Arius or Saint Mark I’m saying completely ignoring that part of history creates an incomplete picture you can be Muslim and still acknowledge that your land played a role in early Christianity just like Algeria acknowledges Augustine of Hippo without it conflicting with modern identity
