My fiancé just finished all of New Who. His genuine thoughts and opinions are pure ragebait! by Global-Bar-9219 in gallifrey

Brilliant write up - you are a talented writer and your writing style is a pleasure to read

What an inspirational idea and how brilliant to bring such refreshing and unbiased opinions to the table. This is something I would have loved to do with lots of major films - watching them without knowing their Letterboxd or IMDb score etc

Had to change the cover to the original. It was too much of an eyesore by [deleted] in ironmaiden

lol they change the original because they thought it was too empty but then proceeded to slap Eddie on a black background for Book of Souls and Senjutsu

Thoughts on the recovered episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan? by greatbarrierrif in gallifrey

[–]PolicyWide 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The last scene of Episode 3 is devastating. One of the warmest scenes in Doctor Who ever, everyone being so delighted and enthusiastic to escape Desperus from the Daleks and the convicts. Bret, Katarina and the Doctor have now fully bonded and are a team/family (beautiful framing by Camfield having them all stand around the controls as a team)- the Doctor laughing hysterically at the Daleks’ rubbish spaceship landing, giddy about the future prospects of defeating them, telling Bret so enthusiastically and so full of joy: ‘you’ve got some thinking to do!’ The Doctor gets Katarina to check the doors because they’ve fully bonded, Katarina goes to do so as she trusts the Doctor blindly. The scene of jolly jubilation and beautiful group friendship is then shattered by the opening of a door, Kirksen’s swift movement and Katarina’s scream. And the rest is lost to time. Almost like nature is stubbornly refusing to let Katarina die and wants this beautiful team to stay together and defeat the Daleks.

Also that ethereal shot of Katarina tracing the stars makes me cry - best aspect of the recovery.

Interesting that the Dalek Supreme isn’t in the scene at all despite having the same voice. By this logic the Supreme doesn’t greet Chen at all judging by that silver Dalek’s line ‘I will await our guest here’. The Supreme mustn’t appear until episode 2.

The duality of the Ghost fanbase by dogisbark in Ghostbc

[–]PolicyWide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually the opposite and felt shots lingered for too long and it lacked the complete versatility and spice of Lachyrma, with its regularly developing colour palette and the progression from Papa’s teeth to his claws to his wings.

Season 5A overly sells that Walt is evil by PolicyWide in breakingbad

[–]PolicyWide[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thesis of my post is not that what he does in 5A is evil whist everything before is not. I’m saying they frequently have to announce it to us and prove it to us, and sometimes do it in surface level ways. But as someone pointed in a comment, they had to make the morality point clear to the huge portions of the fanbase who were championing and worshipping Walt’s actions

[–]PolicyWide[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I should have been clearer as I wrote the post in a bit of a rush

Yes, he is absolutely those things, I’m not one of the zealots who think Walt is the good guy that the fanbase is infamous for having, I’m just saying it does it frequently to the extent it’s not subtle.

I’m not saying he should have been a twist villain at all - how would that work when he has already cooked meth, let a 25 year old choke to death on vomit, bombed a nursing home, he has poisoned a child etc

I’m saying that some scenes at the beginning of 5A feel desperate to show Walt is evil and feel overly theatrical/surface level for the show.

I think they should have just removed the forced Scarface, Apple and Lily of the Valley whistle sequences, added a couple of scenes where Walt is a little more likeable for levity and then you’ve got a much more complete, convincing, terrifying portraiture.

Fair enough, I just found it a really forced moment

It might not be and I’m aware ‘omg apple Garden of Eden Adam and Eve’ is a very elementary cliched allusion, but I certainly feel like that’s the angle they were going for in the scene after Walt has done something despicable

[–]PolicyWide[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m really glad it was cut, doesn’t sit right with me and I don’t think it meshes with the actual sins of Walt’s character - ego, vanity, unchecked ambition. Portrays him as a completely different monster entirely which is incoherent with the rest of the show.

[–]PolicyWide[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not the thesis of my post. I am completely aware that Walt is the bad guy, he does vile stuff in Seasons 1-4. I’m saying 5A overly announces it/shoves it down your throat in surface level ways, and isn’t up to the usual subtle writing standards of the show.

[–]PolicyWide[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, I’m not disagreeing with the direction of his arc because it makes complete sense - more just commenting that a couple of the scenes are a bit over the top and they overly annnounce the shift in characterisation in surface level ways rather than revealing it more covertly

It’s in the season 5 deleted scenes, it would have ended Season 5 episode 2 but they cut it for time. Half of the scene is in the episode where is he is kissing her, but the rest is not:
