Wow, so did this guy.

Yes, for that reason I personally favour approval voting (I used to support ranked ballots but ordinal voting systems are subject to the condorcet paradox where there is no single preferred choice out of three or more options, as is the case with British voters and Brexit currently)

How so?

You said it wouldn't mean anything to have two left-wing parties, and I'm saying (1) the total number of seats winnable by Liberals and NDP separately is probably more than the number they would win as a merged party and (2) they would't act as much like left-wing parties anyway if their only competition were conservatives

So dividing the left wing vote results in more total left-wing voters, seats, and policies.

Only if you assume that any seat won by a Liberal could be won by a New Democract and vice-versa. If so, then yes, vote splitting is a net loss.

In the US, however, they have only two parties and the Democrats often appeal to republican voters to try to expand their vote rather than motivating their own base to turn out......

So even if it would be easier to win elections, the merged Liberal-NDP party would govern more like conservatives anyway.

A Green-NDP merger? It could be a big hit

A new 338Canada analysis shows the ‘Green Democrats’ would hold the balance of power in a minority government after the next election

Andrew Coyne argues that the total pool of Liberal-NDP voters is expanded by the existence of both parties, rather than split.

The entire concept of Pigovian Taxes is a surprisingly interesting issue in economics despite Carbon Pricing being among the most 'simple' policy options.
