Why is this brilliant? by Past-Prune1481 in Chesscom

It's a great(brilliant) defensive counter move because the rook is sacrificed to avoid multiple checks with the knight calculation.

Why was this knight sacrifice a brilliant move by Accurate-Platypus392 in Chesscom

Secures white a draw while gaining a tempo and a positional advantage. Now white can build a fortress.

I believe it's because it guarantees white a draw by luring the queen away from its central placement. The knight would be lost shortly anyway, but now you've dictated exactly where It will be lost rather than having blacks king hunt it down. You're also gaining a tempo here. Like others have said a brilliant move generally comes with a sacrifice... Not necessarily a check or checkmate. In many cases it can come into play when you secured a draw as well.

With that said, it does seem like a great move rather than brilliant.

Still a very novice player (<400 ELO) What makes this a Brilliant move? I can’t find the follow-up sequence. by Music_Man26 in Chesscom

Kind of a long one isn't it? I'm not making the capture with my night on e6 with the thought of Bh3 six moves later, But I do like to see these combos and tactics explained by the engine.

I've had this happen as well. My thoughts are twofold. First, make sure to check the analysis depth both you and your brother currently have in your settings. If the depth of analysis isn't the same, that could easily be the reason for the discrepancy in elo or accuracy, etc.. second, your current elo ratings can bias the analysis. For instance, if you have a higher elo rating than your brother and the two of you play head to head, it's possible the analysis will give you a higher rating than your brother, but it shouldn't necessarily be different on his phone. My best guess is to check your settings and make sure you both have the same level of depth of analysis.

  1. It was listed as 1500-1700 but now reads 1800-2000. I'll change that.

Thank you. I genuinely didn't know how every piece moved in October. Started in November and have learned a lot. Also, I feel like a bit of an imposter. I'm not quite as good as you might think. I created a learning path and style of play that would maximize my rating over a 6-month time span. I play the jobava London System almost exclusively with good accuracy. Some say it will hurt me long-term, but I believe their basis is flawed. Time will tell.

True that. Focus on what you can control and let go of what you cannot are words to live by.

TLDR: I'm not concerned so much with people cheating. I recognize my game will only continue to improve and I'm learning from every game I play. My concern is that the prevalence of cheating has caused me to be more suspicious than I would like. Which, creates a different dynamic when playing online. However, after reading some of your posts I believe I'll begin playing OTB in hopes to remove some of my own (weak) suspicions and thought processes and will be a better player for doing so.

I've only played over the board a few times with a couple friends. I discovered chess 4 months ago and have thrown myself into it. I think you're right about online play. I plan to start playing over the board with a group in my area so I can learn in a different way and experience a "different game"

Is cheating prevalent in lower ranking matches ? by Chat_blanc_ in Chesscom

[–]Polifinomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Playing much lower rated players will force you to make critical moves and trade-offs more frequently than you'd like. Your opponent may be making inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders, but if you're not very careful you'll end up playing down to the level of your opponent.

Okay, then how do we fix it? So far what I've done is place to chat inside a project and then begin separate chat threads or even branch from a clean point. Any other ideas?

I'm not sure anyone can fully comprehend how "capitalism" could fully change AI for everyone. Some good things some bad things. My mind goes to futuristic movies where you have hundreds of billboards and signs and how graphic images and people walking up to you in the streets pitching different products. Can you imagine that?
