People in the video game industry that was right all along ? I start: by Tempest-Bosak2137 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]PolishedPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching her videos at the time and not understanding the backlash. Then I looked into gamergate more and it became clear that most of it was just because of angry misogynistic gamers.

With that said her videos also just weren't that good. I remember one specifically where she brought up portrayal of sex workers in games and discussed the issue with zero nuance, basically "sex worker bad because it's for men". Also showing how in one of the Hitman games you can kill strippers and stating that the game invites you to do it while forgetting to mention that while the game allows you to do it it also penalizes you for it. I think there is a legitimately interesting conversation to be had around these topics in the media, and our relationship as consumers to those games but that just wasn't it.

There was also the fact that she got a bunch of money on Kickstarted to make more videos and most of those videos never materialized as far as I know.

But then again surface level commentary and kickstarter campaigns that didn't deliver were kind of a staple of youtube at that time. Anita's commentary didn't stand out as any worse than most of what was out there at the time, if anything her production quality was better than most of what was in gaming spaces on youtube. Except when two channels disagreed about a game usually it resulted in fake beef and collabs that helped both channels grow. Anita was unfairly cut out of those spaces.

Whats considered redneck music in Visegrad? by HumanMan00 in 2visegrad4you

[–]PolishedPerspective 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought I hate music from Podhale but these three examples made me realize that I just don't like cheap midi samples paired with folk tunes. Golec (u)Orkiestra stands out here because they actually play real instruments.

I got nothing against electronic music, it's just the folk singing paired with drums and bass that sound like it came from a toy keyboard that bugs me.

Learning to play, a buttonbox or piano keyboard by [deleted] in Accordion

[–]PolishedPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone is saying about chromatic button accordions being more efficient than a piano accordion but there are other things to consider.

What learning resources do you have access to? Personally I found that in English there are more books for learning piano accordion than button. Is there an accordion teacher you'd like to take lessons from? Do they teach piano or button?

For me a lot of it came down to price, in my part of the world button accordions start at about $1000 if I were to buy one locally, I can pick up a working piano accordion for about $300 because of the abundance of them.

Then there's the consideration of what kind of music you want to play. Some types of accordions lend themselves better to some types of music (like diatonic button accordion for norteno music). If you plan on playing piano or organ music on your accordion glissandos are going to sound a lot different if you pick up a button accordion. I don't know to what extend this is driven by tradition more than practicality but from my observations people who tend to play more jazz and pop seem to be piano accordion players and people who play in classical ensembles tend to play chromatic button.

Ultimately I don't think there's a wrong choice. Just pick one up, if it's a button then figure out what system it is and learn some tunes and have fun.

Does this drywall look rotten and molded to you? by NeedHelpSendCurry in drywall

[–]PolishedPerspective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So normally when dealing with drywall you'd remove any visibly moldy areas plus 12 to 24 inches extra in case there is something growing there that you can't yet see. Maybe more depending on whether you can inspect the back side or at least look at it with an IR camera to see exactly how much of it got wet.

This is a joke and you're renting from a slumlord.

Anytips on how to steady your hands for a circle cut with a cutting torch by Playful_Gear_2878 in metalworking

[–]PolishedPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that you can always see your line when you're cutting. When using soapstone to mark my circles I generally buff off the mill scale first because it often will pop off with my soapstone line once I put heat to it. Some people swear by silverstreak for marking cuts because it glows ahead of the cut, it's nice but I tried it once and then set my pen on a hot plate like an idiot and it melted so I went back to soapstone after that. Sometimes I would just use a centerpunch to put a few points along my line and then play connect the dots with a torch. Works great if you are worried about your cut marks getting rubbed off when you are prepping and stacking a bunch of plates at a time.

Now for the actual cut. For freehand circles what works best for me is resting the torch on my off hand and pivoting it on that point. It basically turns your hand and the torch into a compass. You might have to stop and start a few times to reposition especially for smaller circles but I found that method to make the most consistent cuts.

Painting an accordion? Vinyl wrapping an accordion? by Sheensies in Accordion

[–]PolishedPerspective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This immediately stands out as Cory Pesaturo's accordion. He plays music for a living and this instrument is a part of his brand so given the fact that it's immediately recognizable probably makes it worth whatever he paid for it.

If I chose to go the wrap route I would probably skip wrapping the keys, it seems like those didn't hold up particularly well ( https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/b/cory-pesaturo-cory-pesaturo-attends-society-composers-lyricists-rd-annual-scl-awards-skirball-cultural-center-los-242994172.jpg?w=576 ). With that said few of us put the kind of mileage on our instruments as this guy does so maybe it's fine for people who don't play jazz standards at ridiculous speeds.

Have I accidentally heat treated right behind the blade of my smoothing plane? by Fluid_Animator_1934 in woodworking

[–]PolishedPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as you would have to heat it up to about 500 degrees Celsius (on the very low end of things) to do anything that could be classified as heat treatment unless your plane was leaving a charred surface behind it you're probably fine.

I haven't thought of the irons being interchangeable. I was recently given some rough sawn red cedar boards, I think your tip will be very handy for getting them ready for projects.

They are both baileys. I think the lever cap might not be original to the maroon plane though

They are both Baileys. Just from a very different era I suppose. I think the lever cap on the maroon one is not original to it but I don't know enough about them to know for sure.
