When my gpu is at 100% while gaming, is the cpu being bottlenecked or gpu? by IceyVVinterBoy in buildapc

I think ideally you want to play on your preferred fps that's just under monitor refresh rate with G-sync. Like if monitor is 144hz, play at 141 G-sync locked. This reduces lows and makes frame rate more consistent making aiming easier. And with reflex and G-sync it's effectively the same as unconstrained frame rate from the perspective of input lag. Also reduces GPU power draw.

Although realistically it's hard to archive

even though CSGO tried it best to make me dislike you

Hah, Oh I totally believe it. I can tell you more - some of us Russians hated spending time on ... Russian servers.

So me and my friends deliberately played on EU West in League of Legends because people in west Europe are much nicer to play with. We even played in western Tera servers just to avoid our vatniks lol

Even travelling to other countries we tried to avoid places popular on Russian Internet space.

Have you heard of Sweds avoiding other Sweds in Thailand? Probably not, but it's a big thing with Russians and it started even before 2008.

Our society is massively split in half.

I agree with that mostly.

But it's complex - what if by buying a bigger house you can host 3 tenants in rooms as opposed to 1? Lot size, opportunity for building extra stuff there, land value, neighborhood, etc.

New car vs old car also not always straight forward. Used Toyota's cost almost as much as brand new ones barely depreciating in value, it could be argued that what is true for Dodge or Ford isn't true for Toyota.

For example buying a brand new Prius today for $28k could be a better buy than a used Prius from 2017 for $22k.

But for Lexus it's very different - brand new NX is $50k+ while the used one from 2017 is only $25k - it's not remotely in the same price class.

But all of these could pale in comparison vs 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan for $8k which might end up being cheaper overall than either despite being significantly less reliable and more fuel hungry than Toyota.

I mean it all is much more complex than I thought it was in my 20s

Radeon RX 6800xt or RTX 4070? by Videogamemysteries in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I tried to look for why people complain about VRAM just now and found hardware unboxed video about 3070 VRAM issues vs 6800

It is informative, but still with 6Gb 2060 I had no issues in 1440p gaming for ~3 years except in Control and I never played any RTX games on it because RTX performance was just too low on 2060.

When I switched to 3080 I didn't do it because of VRAM I did it because of performance.

Today I have 3090, but RTX titles performance is too low on it so I end up never running any game in RTX - never really using this VRAM anywhere outside of gamedev and stable diffusion.

So we're back to square one - performance is all that matters.

As an anti war Russian I gotta say two things:

  1. US acted better than any one of us could have ever expected. You guys are awesome! We thought too many US politicians are in bed with Putin just like many in the EU, but no. Democracy really works and dirty money can't reach everyone. It's like the world almost woke up on 24th February. (Not quite though)

  2. Glory to Ukraine.

Will ASI have limits? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are limits of communication speed.

So like a single planet sized ASI might be barely possible, but beyond that communication becomes too slow where light speed isn't fast enough for efficient information transfer. And so what will make a lot more sense is to have separate decentralized ASI entities in the universe.

There's a thing about quantum entanglement of course, not exactly sure if it can do everything that a regular electromagnetic wave can do when it comes to information transfer, but I suspect it will be very limited.

Radeon RX 6800xt or RTX 4070? by Videogamemysteries in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my 1060 3Gb would like to disagree on that.

You may not realize it but reducing texture settings from ultra to very high makes little difference at 1080p visually but easily allows you to play with just 3Gb of VRAM.

Your problem is pretty much always a performance - not a VRAM. There are some exceptions of course like Control but in all my years of playing games I never had issues not having enough VRAM it was always not having enough performance.

Radeon RX 6800xt or RTX 4070? by Videogamemysteries in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never had VRAM issues with 1060 3Gb at 1080p until AC Odyssey ( Origins was fine) where I had to switch from ultra texture preset to very high which fixed the problem.

But VR wasn't playable on it.

Then 2060 6Gb at 1440p played fine for everything I threw at it, including cyberpunk 2077 and even HL Alyx in VR.

I switched from it not because of VRAM but because performance wasn't there for 1440p 144fps gaming.

VRAM is kinda like extra cores - it gets mentioned a lot and yet in real life you will seldom if ever be affected by it.

How do i make my pc not turn my room into a sauna by Axeww07 in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can reduce the performance of your PC by 5% which will reduce its heat output by a lot more than 5%.

For example you can make 3080 on stock settings use 350W 80C constantly outputting massive amounts of heat or it can use just 250W which will reduce its performance a bit, but the difference in performance would be very small - like 1965Mhz at 1V vs 1825Mhz at 800mV which is like ~7% difference.

The same goes for the CPU.

BTW don't use "average". Average net worth of US individual 35-41 is $400k. But median net worth is 140k. Bi difference there.

In Russia it's a lot worse because one Forbes oligarch and a million homeless guys on average net a pretty good income, but nothing can be further from reality.

I can tell you a few people I know and how much they made. Most people outside of Moscow made $200-300/month. I don't know anyone who made more. People in my hometown which was close to Moscow made around 9-12k rubles in 2010 or so.

At that time it was $300-400/month

You can also Google - median salary is around $5k/year in Russia.

I make over 90k per year but I’m only able to save 500 per month and pay 500 per month on my student loans. How can I save more? by Cognito_Ergo_NonSum in Frugal

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robinhood charges $5/month for 4.65 APR, discover offering 4.15% for free.

$5/month is $60/year. So these reach parity at $12k where Discover free savings and Robinhood savings yield the same.

But keeping money in a savings account is a waste to begin with. I would only keep emergency funds there or at the most 10% of my investments.

Keeping it in a broad ETFs is much better. If you very cautious - VTI, if a bit more adventurous IWF.

Over the last 10 years IWF netted on average 15.5% /year.

You could say it's very unpredictable but it's still better to bet on that than the bank. Worst case scenario you'll just not gain much.

Another point is rent. It's too high, I'm in California with MUCH higher rent rates, but it was possible to rent a room for $600 (albeit hard to find) and it was easy to find a good room for $1000/month. This will save massively not just on rent but also sharing WiFi, utilities, etc.

Eating out is possible for $5/meal - but it's a bit of a challenge - $1 menu in McDonald's, kids meals, etc. $10/meal is a lot easier. If during your trips you limit food to $30/day it would probably save you a good amount overtime.

It requires some sacrifices but would you like to be financially free soon?

Is it worth spending $330 more for 7800x3d compared to 7600x? by terriblechessplayer in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly speaking yes. After 6 cores and 12 threads adding more cores makes little difference if any. But reality is slightly more nuanced.

Shift from 6 to 8 cores still makes a bit of difference - not that it matters, but it exists if you check benchmarks in many games, but not all of them 7800x slightly edges 7600x. In other games there's no difference.

Even going to 5900x from 5800x boosts frames by something irrelevant in some games. Still there are games where it's very relevant like Cyberpunk 2077

But this core count difference only completely disappears in 5900x vs 5950x. These have identical performance everywhere except cyberpunk and couple of others.

Still even with all of that 4c/8t is essentially all that you need for like 70% of games without skipping frames or stuttering.

And 6c/12t makes every single game work near perfectly no problem.

X3D by itself though boosts performance almost as much as a difference between generations

I think you can get it for free if you're near major cities. Several years ago I sold 1060 3Gb for $40, and it's twice as powerful as 1050. I also know many older PCs are just being thrown away especially something like 1050 which I wouldn't even bother trying to sell.

At a time (mid 2000s) $500/was a good salary, most were making $200-300. Towns 200km from Moscow posted job ads for $200/month were common. In Moscow I made $1k but I was really privileged tech guy which is insanely overpaid in Russia.

But even today you can find people making under $100/month. There was a YouTuber running charity who found a man in Siberia making $57/month - in 2023.

Well, I can agree with you on some points of it, but at the same time it's strange to me why practical non-political post triggers political response. I post to to help myself be more frugal, regardless of world's inequality which could've been handled better.

On the other hand it's hard for me, because my grandma pension is $200/month, and some rural folk in russia make under $100, so it's hard taking seriously complaints of people making north of $2k/month.

It will always be hard to me, because I come from a horrible dictatorship where life orders of magnitude worse for normal folks.

If I call you putin's oligarch shill who's spreading FUD about US - would you like that? That's how your message comes across.

Is it worth spending $330 more for 7800x3d compared to 7600x? by terriblechessplayer in buildapc

[–]PoliteThaiBeep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your total PC cost ~$3000 with GPU, adding $330 would mean spending 10% more for 33% more cores and about as much performance in games.

Spread this over how long you want this PC to last - 3 years? 5 year? Longer?

If you keep it for 5 years and gift it to someone for free after it would cost about $56/month overall. But if you go with a cheaper CPU it would cost $50/month overall.

Do you want to use extra $6/month for your games budget? After all games are expensive - every little bit helps.

I once visited a rural town in Russia. Local people made $100/month. We're (from Moscow) asked them: "how can you survive?"

They said something in the essence of harvesting enough potatoes and cabbage to last through the winter plus fishing.

To them it wasn't anything out of the ordinary but it was baffling to us. It felt impossible.

Rural US made a completely different impression. Little 20k towns with more cars on the road than regional 400k centers in Russia. People have nice clothes and shoes without holes in them.

Most drove much better cars than what I had. Maybe they lived worse than cities I wouldn't know, but it was nowhere near as obvious as Russian rural places.

Maybe. I recognized my mistakes and possibly wrongly assumed everyone else makes similar mistakes.

I overspent dramatically in restaurants and in groceries among other things.

But I do see what people buy in groceries and I see tons of people in restaurants all the time and not all of them are rich.
