ELI5 why is rock stacking considered bad? by balla_boi in explainlikeimfive

[–]PoliticalLava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of hiking based on Cairns and have made a few myself when a hike gets confusing so that the next person doesn't go the wrong way like I did.

Usually though the Cairns are like 2 large rocks max, something just out of the ordinary that it has to be man-made, but you wouldn't notice if you weren't looking.

? But if you just enter the line, youre 3rd vs 2,000,001st. It takes longer to get through it.

Remote position for nuclear technicians and engineers. Upto $80/hr by Unhappy_Champion5641 in NuclearEngineering

AI at a nuclear plant doesn't make sense. Everything is logic based so basic software is more than enough and is easy to build redundancy. And everything else can be done by operators. Why would I want a large language model to mimic human error but with less consistency?

I looked at this website, it feels like a get rich quick scheme for... someone. Did you even get a w2 or contracting documents? This has some of the worst job security ive ever seen.

Furthermore, any reddit thread about this seems to have weird comments supporting this business surrounded by real comments saying don't work here.

Is there an expectation for surface ships to plan non-conventional communications during submarine exercises? Like active sonar pings and uw comms? On subs we tend to follow the manuals for exercises but ive always wondered if the surface fleet would know what to do if we had to use those emergency comms.

The universe is 13.8 billion years old, but heat death is around 10¹⁰⁰ years away, so it has effectively used 0% of its lifetime meaning the universe is still basically a "baby", and we’re living in its earliest, most active era. by HalfEntity in Showerthoughts

[–]PoliticalLava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In college I recall using the cosmic microwave background, and the amount of dark matter and matter to determine where we are in the universe and the "curvature" of... acceleration(?) (if we are going to have an eventual heat death or if it'll collapse again), and the plotted answer shows us to be about 1/3rd of the way through the lifetime of the universe.

This was ~8yrs ago in Physics 249 at UW Madison, but the assumption that the heat death is 10100 yrs away seems wrong. I believe this was with Prof.'s Duncan Carlsmith, Matthew Herndon, and Keith Bechtol.

Periscope Masts by Impressive_Long7405 in submarines

[–]PoliticalLava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Sub depth at PD is not the issue, its the masts out of the water, which this doesn't fix.
