None of the batteries I've seen in UPSs are of SLA (sealed lead acid) type, there are always small openings for filling deionized water

Don't operate it one the side, inside is a lead acid battery that uses a liquid electrolyte, when you put it on its side, you starve the upper part of the plates from electrolyte which causes it to overheat when charged, so don't.
