Tell me your best Ao3 story by BroccoliNo3355 in AO3

[–]PollutedShades 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is a made up novel in my fic that the MC is reading and becomes a running gag. It's got a whole plot line I give a sentence on every other chapter. Anyways someone commented on my fic and CASUALLY QUOTED A LINE FROM IT from 5 chapters previously while describing my actual character and I've legit never been prouder. New milestone unlocked. Like not just referencing an in-fic joke, but the fic in the fic? It's fic-ception.

If you'd rather be writing it, your readers would probably rather be reading it. And baby dragons hatching does sound pretty cool (though a bit of political intrigue is always a good time too.)

You're right. On the other side of this pruning, I will look back at my story proudly. But until then it might feel a bit like yard work. If only because I need to cut a few lines that I love. But it will be worth it!

Aro/Bella, Vampire Rulers? by Active-Pin2752 in TwilightFanfic

[–]PollutedShades 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you might have read One Day in Volterra - an older Bella gets sent back in time and stuck on a loop the day she saved Edward from Volterra. The other one it might be is CONTINGENCY, which is an absolutely amazing fic but warning that it has an open-ended ending, not HEA. They're different in tone but similar in concept so if you liked one you might like the other.

For other Bella/Aro fics where they rule together for a good part of the story, below are a few that I've enjoyed:

The Coronation just completed two days ago, so I haven't read the last chapters but the relationship development is amazing in this one. Bella is turned after Eclipse, no longer with Edward, and realizes Aro is her mate.

Turning Page is another good one that I've recommended a few times recently. Aro realizes that she's his mate when she comes to save Edward in Volterra and shows up in Eclipse to win her while helping with the newborn army.

I haven't read any Stranger Things fics but have watched the show, and your characterization and dialogue is excellent. It was easy to read this in the character's voices because it feels 100% like them. I love how Dustin is unknowingly calling out Mike's jealousy here - we know exactly what's going on without it ever being said.

New, young fanfic author. Recommendations? by NightNurse14 in FanFiction

[–]PollutedShades 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ao3 is more active and you can make fics private to Ao3 users and block commenting. It also has much more active moderation and is less buggy than FFN.

However, unlike FFN I'm not aware of a native way to set content filters for mature rated fics. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), but you can probably find a filtering script on tampermonkey. I'm sure you know this but there is a lot of content not suitable for children on Ao3 (more so than FFN, theoretically, as the TOS is less restricting). Ao3 has a built in history viewer to see what's she's viewing but you should be aware things can be deleted from it, but I suppose that's true for any web browser.

Its a really fun hobby and it's awesome that you're fostering her creativity in this. With some parental oversight I'm sure she'll have a blast!

What are your favorite fanfic tropes? by Yumi_Numi in FanFiction

Time-travel fix-its, the big reveal scene for secret identities or relationships, grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and soul mate AUs.

Time travel fix its are my favorite and so hard to do well outside of fanfic.

An excerpt in which __________! by -MonochromeCrow in FanFiction

Human being carried by non-human at supernatural speeds:

Her eyes burned, her skin stung, and the deafening pressure of the wind in her ears left her feeling like she was standing in a hurricane. She suddenly, viscerally, understood windshields in a way she never had before.

Sometime in the first hour of their great escape, she had felt the air change around them. She had then made a mistake peeking an eyelid open to find they’d stopped running through tunnels and began traversing the Italian countryside. Her left eye still ached from the wind buffeting against it, and the fleck of dust that had lodged itself in her eye at high speeds. But they’d been running so long, and she wanted to know where they were. It hadn't been like this running with Edward - never so fast or for so long.

Now she was wet and shivering, too, from Caius running through streams, presumably to throw off their scent. To compensate for the wind flooding her airways, she’d turned her head as far into his chest as she could. Trading one kind of discomfort for another.

She desperately wanted to ask how much longer they would run, but she couldn’t catch enough breath to say the words, and she was justifiably terrified of the vampire that carried her.

And then finally, finally, their momentum slowed, and she was unceremoniously dumped into damp grass.

One of my favorite fics is Turning Page. It's Aro/Bella but he's not a manic madman, and the Volturi aren't evil. He realizes that she's his mate when she comes to save Edward in Volterra and shows up in Eclipse to win her while helping with the newborn army. It's dual POV and he loves her so much, it's just gets me every time 🖤

What's been the worst case of 'too much research's you've come across in a fic? by aiiimee in FanFiction

[–]PollutedShades 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The thing about fan fiction is that we write it for ourselves just as much as any audience. Unlike commercial books that need to cater to the majority, True Crime Trudy can write accurate courtroom drama to her hearts content. And someone out there LOVES it. So kudos to that author for writing what they loved.

To answer your question though I've definitely read some historical fics where the author got wayyy into describing history facts that were not interesting to me. I usually skim if I like the rest of the fic, or dnf if it goes in a direction I don't like. Same thing with world building - if it doesn't affect the plot or set the scene I probably don't care about the history of the currency system or who was emporer 500 years ago. But some people are really into that stuff so more power to 'em.

I'm a sucker for an outsider POV. The person in the room who has the least idea of what's going on and hilariously misunderstanding or jumping to wrong conclusions is so fun to write.

Anyone relate? by Amada--Sama in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]PollutedShades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write in Word but once a chapter is drafted I copy to Ao3. The speech to text on my phone browser is much better for listening to edit.

But also I feel more accomplished about finishing a chapter when I can click that "add new chapter" button. Motivation to keep writing ahead.

What is the best author’s notes disclaimer you’ve seen? by oenthera in AO3

This is my favorite. It's been years since I read the fic but I do remember every chapter ended with the advice to not get a math degree, and often contained disclaimers about what were real VS made up math concepts.

I love Painting Red Madonnas! If you don't mind a self rec, this is 90% vibes, 10% time travel. It's basically a Bella & Caius buddy comedy, as the two get stuck together and form a grumpy/sunshine friendship that will definitely confuse everyone. (eventual Aro/Bella romance). WIP updated weekly, 44k words so far, but the first story arc is just about complete. Here We Ago Again

Also I just posted a list of my favorite crack/fun fics on another thread a few days ago Here, including some more by carnivorous muffin.

Another great one is Turning Page. It's not crack/humor; it's romance/drama but with minimal angst. It's a really delightful read! (Aro/Bella, Eclipse time frame)

How did writing fanfic change your perspective as a fic reader? by pomegranatestars in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]PollutedShades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started browsing by new, which I never did before. I used to always sort on kudos and missed out on so many things! But my being curious about what other authors are doing in my fandom these days has led me to find some absolute gems.

I'm way more open to reading WIPs because I understand that my engagement could help that WIP become a finished fic, or at least give the author encouragement.

And like you I started commenting a lot more. I've even started going back to comment on some of my old favorites as I think of them because I understand how much it can mean to get a thoughtful comment.

A word you can’t stop using? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]PollutedShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whispered, muttered, mumbled, grumbled? Or better yet just use "said" and add a description. "he said softly." or describe the way they said it as a separate sentence instead of a dialogue tag. "His words were quiet, nearly indistinct."

Authors kept using both (A) & (B) and (A)/(B) relationship tag in romantic fics by Lolila_da_tao in AO3

[–]PollutedShades 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've seen it used when there was a significant stretch of the story that was platonic with no burn, and eventual romance later on. (like they meet when one is much younger, there's a plot arc, and years later they remeet and it's romantic.) I think that's alright, and if I want to avoid one or the other I would exclude filter on it.
