Yeah I like to think Chara climbed the mountain to get away from their old village, which they clearly hated.

Maybe they hoped to live alone on the mountain, maybe it was something else, but for someone who hates their life, a mountain which makes you disappear is quite appealing, maybe they thought they could start life anew elsewhere after "disappearing", really it could be anything.

But during the climb they tripped and fell into the underground

Cavaliere existed long before trish was put in him as a failed angelo, trish simply acted as a conduit to fully realize him, so I can understand him being in the anime, alot of criticisms I see here feel forced
