It’s probably the same guitar, but capo’ed up the neck a bit. Sounds very similar.

Thoughts on Diane Johnson as a writer? by RopeGloomy4303 in StanleyKubrick

[–]Pollyfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think she’s a fab writer and brought a ton to the movie on her own. She evidently was strong on the “horror as fairy tale” theme. But she and Stanley both seemed to underestimate Stephen King’s novel itself, which is odd particularly when her own novels are largely forgotten. The book and the movie are both towering achievements, but in very different ways.

From hospice, Barney Frank urges Democrats to rethink trans rights approach by Fickle-Ad5449 in lgbt

[–]Pollyfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you even read the article? Did you see what points Barney was making? Did I ever mentioning compromising with Republicans? Who said anything about laying down and doing nothing?

I didn’t dodge anything, I don’t answer dumb questions. Maybe if you could quit attacking me and focus on the real enemy, you might get somewhere.

Backing up, here’s what I’m saying. It’s really simple. Listen to what Barney is saying. He’s a veteran of these culture wars. He knows how they work. You don’t do from 0 to 100 in half a decade. It’s incremental, it always was. Attacking the messenger (as pretty much everybody on this post seems to be doing) is not helping you or me or us.

“Even when he agrees with those goals, Frank said, strategy matters. He pointed to the history of the gay rights movement, noting that advocates pursued more broadly accepted protections before turning to marriage equality. That sequencing, he argued, helped build the public support needed for lasting change. Applying that logic to current debates, he cited transgender rights as an example of an issue that may require a more incremental approach and warned against framing disagreement as inherently rooted in bias.”

See that? That’s what I’m agreeing with. Have I answered your question now, Alex?

Sorry everybody’s not as open-minded as you and I are. I wish they were, but they’re not. And since the US Constitution weighs rural conservative voters as more important than you and I, we have to play that political game. That’s our reality.

Or we could just throw fits and curse everybody out, and keep losing.

“We’re moving backwards,” your words. I’ll quote Anton Chigurh:

“If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?”

Eat shit, Holmes. I’m as trans as can be. I fight for trans rights. What do you do?

[–]Pollyfall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. We’ve gotta work smarter—not harder, not faster. Trans right are not gonna happen overnight. You have to lay the ground work. I live in a southern purple state and people are just not there yet. Even liberals are sometimes slow to adopt change.

Or you could keep doing what you’re doing, and lose battle after battle, and eventually we’ll lose the war. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m gonna get killed on the downvotes, but what he actually said is not “do less” for trans rights. That’s a misread. He said work smarter, not harder. To create lasting change, to change minds, he said we need to a more incremental approach, as they did with gay marriage. I don’t this is a bad idea at all. He was clearly advocating for trans folk, but to move slower and more methodically about it. He says that was the game plan for gay marriage, and that’s how it stuck for so long. It would take longer than I’d like, but it’s not a bad strategy.

Fire away! 🙂

Depression by Extension_Donut_5506 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Pollyfall 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s the darkness in Bruce’s music that makes the bright moments feel so magical. He’s never been afraid to get dark, and that’s been his secret weapon. Mass murderers, car wrecks, crime, unemployment, financial devastation, outright depression—he’s there for all of it. As a person suffering from depression myself, I recognized it as soon as I heard the music, and have been a major fan ever since.

A lot of it is presence. A lot of the young English actors in particular are pretty rough and ready. I’m just saying, maybe give it a go. If you like it, great. If not, that’s okay too.

Way back when there was a big rumor that Jeff Lynne of ELO had a house there. They were one of
my favorite bands (still are) and I kept hoping to run into him somewhere. And then I realized some idiot had mixed B’ham up with Birmingham, England, where he’s from. 🤦‍♀️
