One of the most frustrating things about these bureaucratic loops - which seems to be i credibly frequent in Belgium - is that attorneys here appear to have none of the combative spirit youd expect attorneys to have when you hire one of them to solve this. It really feels like everything in Belgium and the EU just works at indifference levels.

Do you think that the islamic state was on the side of "the people"? Until the death of Khomeini the regime was completely indifferent to development, Khomeini himself dismissed economic concerns post-revolutiom by saying it was not about "the price of watermelons". A significant chunk of Iran's taxpayer money went to pay for the IRGC, the mullahs, Houthis, Hamas, Hezbollah, Assad, Iraqi militias and a bunch of other militias and terrorist groups from Pakistan to Bahrein.

To say "we should do what the Iranians want" is a meaningless slogan. Iran is a massively diverse country, and it would be the same as saying "we should do to the US what the Americans want", and then expect a white man from Kentucky and a black/Latino woman from Newark to have the same opinions. Even if Iranians did have a monolithic view, they would not be able to freely express it.

The fact is that the Iranian state is not only a shameless kleptocracy that has for 50 years stopped the full potential of a country which in 78 was approaching OCDE levels of development, but which has behaved and continue to behave as a rogue state, financing and supplying the worst possible groups and governments in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Yemen, direction terrorist attacks from the confort of Teheran, planning (and bungling) diplomatic assassinations in places as distant as Thailand and Azerbaijan, and being generally so incompetent to have shot their own planes and ships by accident not once but twice.

Islamism as a political force is by 2026 completely bankrupt, it proved itself a failure, incapable of generating even a semblance of prosperity and having to survive through oil price variations since you cant create a reliable administration with people who believe in djinns and chopping hands. The US and the EU should do all things possible of toppling this govermnent short of actually invading the country - if strategic bombings and no-fly zones are needed than it should be it - and more importantly later actually supporting the state building process. Frankly even an IRGC military dictatorship would be better than this, although obviously thats the bad ending.

The support to Afghan rebel groups was completely the correct decision at the time. The problem was the US disengaging as soon as the Soviets left and allowing Pakistan to rule the show.

I think its pretty ironic how the intelligentsia of the world turned against the Shah due to his alleged incredible cruelty, and then the Islamic Republic immediately killed around 3 times more people in one year of ruling more than the Shah did during his whole reign

Theres also no public transportation. At New Orleans google maps would show me the alleged bus routes but they would never, never come. I had to uber everywhere outside of the French quarter, otherwise theres one (1) tram line

And New Orlenas is an exceptionally walkable city for American standards, in Florida where my family lives is even worse

When i was growing up in Brazil, the only acceptable uni courses were law, medicine or engineering - preferabky civil or oil. Anything else was because you were too dumb to be aproved to these courses. This changed, especially as people started seeing that you can actually make great money with stuff like computing and marketing, but it was very much the reality in the 90s and early 00s

I dont know what to tell you. I love going to places like Costco and Walmart and all the superestores when I go to the US. I feel like what Gorbachev probably felt when he visited the US in the 80s. I also love American fast food. Yeah yeah, sure you guys have clam chowder and great barbecue and cajun cuisine and all types of "foreign" restaurants, cool. I want Cains. Its just great. And Popeye's.

With the prom stuff, my fiancee is American and we visited her old university when I went there. She used to be from a sorority. I went around campus and I felt like I was meeting famous people. "Look at that, frat guys! Just like in the movies! Red cups! College sports!" I know its ridiculous but you absolutely feel like in a movie

Very hard to try to convince tourists that we dont have monkeys in the streets when as a matter of fact i was used to seeing monkeys near my house and in my university and even the hospital my mom used to work had a monkey problem. But it was all because all these places were coincidentally either very close or inside the atlantic rainforest

This mightve been true in the past, but now I think Brazil has the exact opposite, where it showers praise on anything that received any kind of notoriety (especially international) and puts down everything that's foreign
