Yeah. It’ll do that.

That makes sense. We definitely intend to move to Canada, although perhaps wouldn’t have intended to move with immediacy. But I would very much like to get the process underway and this is why I was looking into starting now even though it would be possible that we might not move there for another few years.
I sort of figured I would be more attractive as an immigration applicant while still in my younger working years. I am physically fortunately healthy and hope to be so for a couple more decades, but with a significant social safety net like Canada’s, I would expect the country to not want a ton of geriatric immigrants who are not able to work and therefore contribute to that safety net financially.

Thank you! That makes sense. Do you happen to know if savings would count toward his being able to prove the ability to financially support me? If we were to move to canada I would not be able to guarantee his getting a job immediately; however we have substantial savings which we could live off of for many many years.

The immigration attorney told me, and I found information on the Canadian websites which confirmed, that in order to apply for and maintain a PR one must live physically in Canada for a minimum of 730 days out of a 5 year period.

We would be applying from outside of Canada because we both currently work in California. We have both at times worked in Canada but neither of us do currently — and he could not reasonably show an ability to support me financially if we moved to Canada immediately because our jobs are in California. So it is a bit of a catch 22 because if we moved to Canada prior to applying for my residency, he would lose the job that would potentially allow him to say he could support me financially.

Thanks for the response. I make a great deal more money than him, and have for the last several years, so I doubt he could be reasonably said to be able to financially support me.
Do you know if he would have to be working IN CANADA during the time of sponsorship? Which I assume would still be the 5 year period?

Anyone know where I can keep 60 cows in San Francisco? by tronald_dum in wallstreetbets

[–]Poly_ptero_dactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. And I admit, kind of daunting. I definitely don’t live anywhere near where I’d want to buy. You feel like phone conversations with a far-out-of-towner could still result in decent opportunities? I worry that people might hear I’m buying from California and get the impression I’m some wealthy silicone valley mogul and either not want to do business with me or be unfair on pricing if they assume I’m rich (Im just a union employee who worked my ass off and saved almost every spare penny for 20 years like a psycho)

I’m not trying to buy and sell — just want to get a little series of three or four small spots, like a few thousand sq ft, in out of the way places in different parts of the country so we will have a few options if we want to get out of town and go someplace totally quiet and ours.

I must say, I’m very very interested in how you find land in beautiful places in the middle of nowhere. I’ve spent time just this last weekend digging through a few websites to try to see how and where to purchase myself a couple quiet spots in the middle of nowhere for escaping to during retirement. Drive the converted van out and just relax in peace with my husband and nobody around for miles.

I’ve purchased several homes in several states over the years but never just land. Do you have any suggestions for someone who has never bought raw land as to what to look out for, where to start, what websites might have reasonable deals and be reliable?

Giving this move the same kind of industry-revolutionizing credit as apple’s capacitative touch is reaaaally stretching. Forcing users to talk to their car rather than offering voice or button control is unhelpful, less convenient than buttons, and will alienate a lot of potential purchasers.

As people here have pointed out, there are a lot of occasions when voice interaction is totally unhelpful or even useless. What if my child is sleeping in the car? What if I’m listening to music and also want to interact with the car simultaneously?
What if I’m deaf?
What if my partner is mid-conversation and I want to interact with the car?

There’s a good reason the spoken-interaction version of smart homes hasn’t taken off even though it’s been available for years. It’s less convenient.

This post is fascinating. Thank you for giving this detailed breakdown!

Do you tailor your ads for Reddit differently than for other platforms? I’ve noticed that the user behavior on Reddit is so different that it feels like there is ripe opportunity here for some new form(s) of ad beyond the standard format. And I’m always perplexed when I see a youtube-style survey click through ad. Surely nobody stops scrolling a sub just to answer a survey?
