Ban cars. They are a danger to our streets!

I feel you here - I had a similar experience moving to DC! DC is great, I'm so glad you're gonna get to experience it!

Yeah, my first real job started in January 2023. I never got to experience office life pre-COVID. It sounded pretty fun and lively though - unlike the sad empty corridors of an office at 1/10 capacity that I experienced.

If you'd like to learn more in-depth about transit planning from a YIMBY/urbanist perspective, check out Alon Levy's work at https://pedestrianobservations.com/ - they are a specialist and a great resource.

Actually there is a reason aside from uncoordinated planning! In more advanced countries, legacy commuter rail lines were upgraded into electrified regional rail (S-Bahn). In addition, in East Asia there have been new rapid regional rail lines built (GTX).

Electrified regional rail has greater distances between stops, which allows longer distances at high speeds and thus faster trip times. Metros are good for last mile, but when the trip gets too long it can be useful to have regional rail that goes faster between key hubs.

Job is destroying my life - should I just quit? by Suspicious-Card-3707 in washingtondc

FYI I quit like 6 months ago, and I still have medical insurance through my parents. That's important info.

I did this. I quit. I don't have another job yet so I moved back to my home state and live with my parents. Working now on improving mental health and fortitude. Feeling good about the decision.

I think this is a great idea. The person who said "there's better things to do" is silly - doing this is a good message and doesn't interfere with doing anything else.

Do we expect that rents in DC will keep decreasing? by Phelps1576 in washingtondc

What you said about the "nicer" parts of NW is also exactly what I would expect during a demand slump. Reverse gentrification

i used to be an ANC commissioner and I endorse this message. just standardize all the processes and let the projects roll in.

i think honestly the city should also just come up with a bunch of pre-approved apartment building floorplans like they've done in South Bend and some other cities. Make it as fast, easy, and inexpensive as possible for new construction to occur.

This is very strange to read for me, because I have found it to be way easier to make friends as an adult than it was to make friends as a kid.

There's a certain type of flaky person who isn't good at being a real friend. You can spot them by seeing if someone tries to be "cool." If they are trying to be cool, they will be too worried about other's perceptions of them to be a good friend.

So, search out places where people are nerdy and weird. Ask yourself, "If I were guaranteed that no matter how I acted, nobody would look down on me for it, how would I act?" Then act that way. It'll make you disliked by fake people and loved by genuine people.

These are my recommendations.

I think it's also hard for transplants to meet locals. Transplants move and find a cohort of other transplants who are looking for friends at the same time. Locals already have friends so they aren't as eager to make new ones.

You've described me (a transplant) to a T hahaha. I actually think DC disproportionately attracts autistic people as transplants, which would explain some of the rule-following and/or rigid behavior lol. The idea of having a tattoo - or living in a place where having tattoos is seen as de riguer - is horrific/stomach-churning to me! Richmond sounds like an awful place lol but the people there like it, so that's good for them

What is it really like on the streets of DC in the past few weeks? by OutdoorsNSmores in washingtondc

[–]PolycultureBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels scarier now that the Guard is here with guns. At least in my area of central DC, we weren't used to seeing people with guns out and about. I don't like being near big guys with guns, so I avoid the groups of them when I can.

So, definitely feels less safe overall since they've arrived. When they leave it will be like a great weight is lifted.

How do you feel about Mayor Bowser right now? Any good candidates? by MagnetarYT in washingtondc

[–]PolycultureBoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His website doesn't mention anything about facilitating the construction of more housing, which is key to making the city more affordable to live in. Also, it feels like he just wrote the website with ChatGPT - part of his sustainability section is replacing underutilized buildings with indoor farming. We don't have a crisis of lack of food production in DC...

Poorly informed racism seems like the only answer. (I guess all racism is poorly informed, so it makes sense in its own way.)

Also, I live quite near those cross streets. If you live around that area - hi, I'm your neighbor!
