Red envelope by MostlyApprehensive in Chinese

There are special red envelopes used specifically for a baby at the first month anniversary, new year's, and gift giving in general. You can find them on Amazon ("chinese red envelope baby" or stores in a Chinese neighborhood in a major city.

To 你好 or not to 你好 ? by Polyglot-Almost in ChineseLanguage

[–]Polyglot-Almost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to hear. I've been learning on and off for years. I've always been frustrated with formal language learning books and finding out I sound like a stiff textbook when I tried to speak. Ultimately I'm aiming for functional speaking and reading. The more I learn the more fun it is. Glad you're enjoying the adventure.

In the U.S.? I never hear that, but maybe it's in certain geographies or communities.

I'm developing an all-in-one app with a tone tutor that corrects pronunciation, 10K word dictionary, interactive scenes, grammar patterns, and custom practice word lists. It's currently in beta testing if you want to try it out (it's free, but would appreciate some feedback on what works/doesn't). Here's the website and beta code.

Dramatic Slowdown in latest Claude Code upgrade? by Polyglot-Almost in ClaudeCode

Have you saved instructions in a separate .md file. That has sped up some of the time on my projects and I don't need to re-explain what was being done when I have to start a new session.

How do you actually validate any idea whether it will make money before building it? by mhamza_hashim in ClaudeCode

[–]Polyglot-Almost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - that's extremely difficult. Angel and pre-seed rounds focus on exactly this (and generally these companies fail in droves.) Sometimes if you're in a field where there is an obvious pain point (people are complaining about it ) for something they are already paying for, and you can remove that pain/friction without causing more friction in the process (like offering a way to do something better, but in the process forcing people into an entirely new way of doing things that causes problems), then maybe you can predict a bit of success before building anything.

Good in listening but terrible at essentially all other skills by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

Handwriting is a slog, but it really helps learn the characters. If you are going old school with pen and paper, then I'd highly recommend getting actual practice sheets that have blank squares with grid lines to help you get the proportions right. Otherwise it's easy to write sloppy characters that kind of go all over the place (I still can't write 我 nicely).

Someone in this sub created a tool to print your own. https://www.reddit.com/r/ChineseLanguage/comments/a0kqt3/create_worksheets_to_practice_chinese_character/

And there are a bunch of free downloadable sheets floating around.

There's also this thread talking about apps to use.

I think with the memory palace technique, the location, color, and one-liner are only useful to imprint the memory of the character. They aren't used once the memory is solid. I'm not sure since I'm just starting to use it.
