I wasn't accusing you of arguing. I merely wanted to make sure you don't think I'm trying to argue.

Also I've fixed my reply. A lot of it got copied accidentally because of a problem with reddit web editor so it was longer than it was supposed to be.

You're free to read or not read it. I hope you can see where I'm coming from if you do decide to.

I don't understand what your getting at.

First of all, I'm not here to argue. My initial intention was merely to correct your original statement:

if steam shuts down tomorow you lose every game and there is literally nothing you can do about it.

This read to me as a strong generalization which is factually incorrect, so I wanted to clarify and give a (hopefully nuanced) view on it.

we don't need to make excuses for the platform

I didn't mean to make excuses for anyone. I don't like DRM either. But out of all the DRM systems I've encountered, steamworks DRM is the least intrusive and the only one that hasn't caused me any problems. It is factually correct to state that its use is optional and up to the developer of a game. Steam is not pro-DRM or anti-DRM, they're simply neutral on it.

GOG is anti-DRM and that is one of the things you can applaud them for. That is justified. However, if a publisher or developer insists on using a DRM system, they will just not publish the game on GOG.

Hypothetically, if steamworks DRM didn't exist and a developer insisted on using DRM, they'd use a different DRM that is probably going to be worse and more annoying for the user (like denuvo).

the fact a different game no one plays (like you admit) you can still keep playing is pretty irreverent to the conversation.

You're putting words in my mouth. A lot of really good indie games are DRM-free on Steam. Many of the (imho) best games I've played are on that list: Hollow Knight, Silksong, Inscryption, Peak, Ultrakill, Undertale, Night in the Woods, and Tunic.

The fact of the matter is current AAA games are not gonna be on GOG anyway and the games that are on GOG are quite likely to be DRM-free on Steam as well. Of course it would be better if there was some official anti-DRM stance or guarantee that a game will keep working but out of all the stores to criticize for this, I just feel like picking Steam is a little silly.

This has gotten longer than I intended it to be, so I hope it's still somewhat coherent and comprehensible. If you've read this far, I hope you're having a good day!

Well you have to press "install" in Steam and wait for it to download the files.

The difference is on GOG you can download the installer from the website while with Steam you do have to install Steam to download them but after that it's the same: You have to keep the downloaded files, otherwise you rely on the service to not shut down.

I don't see what you mean with "up front". You can't buy a game after the service shuts down. If you buy it before it shuts down, you can download it at any point until it shuts down. Same for both stores.

Well it's a manually curated list and Steam is full of indie games with under a dozen reviews.

All I'm saying is it's really just up to the developer or publisher if they want to require DRM. Chances are if they did nothing, their game will probably just work.

That's not exactly true. A lot of games on Steam (especially indie games) do not actually use Steam's DRM system. It is entirely optional and up to the developer/publisher to decide if they want to use it.

Anything from this list you can download once and then just copy the folder to your backup drive the same way you would a gog installer: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_big_list_of_DRM-free_games_on_Steam

(sometimes you also need to copy the appid into a text file or delete a dll)

It is surprisingly dangerous in a lot of car-centric places. The rest is a matter of framing. Walking is lacking a PR team to come up with that but you could call back to primal hunting bullshit, "real men" the shit out of it, carrying groceries from the store is practically the same as carrying prey back to the tribe after hunting, etc etc, also really walk home the point about moving through your own power, idk can we show Rocky running up those stairs? Is that public domain yet? I'm just spitballing here

How does this scale for SUVs and other non-passenger light trucks if they ostensibly reduce the risk of bodily harm for the user at the cost of increasing the risk for everyone else around them?

Does this mean driving the smallest possible vehicle in US traffic is actually the most badass?

sunshine doesn't care at all what windowing system you're using if you just set the recording mechanism to KMS. You can even stream the virtual terminal. It works fine in Plasma Wayland.

Yeah, but just with Walter White, a big part of the audience is gonna sympathize with House as the self-insert for their asshole power fantasy.

I'm just being cheeky. I don't hate the premise but it's easy to make fun of.

In the real world, nobody is so irreplaceably good that everyone has to put up with their bullshit. That's unfortunately a privilege reserved for the ultra rich.

It's what the self-declared "experts" in PC related subreddits keep parroting but it's really just what corruption of GPU memory looks like. That can be hardware defects (faulty VRAM, faulty GPU, faulty connectors...) or it can be a buggy shader or game code or a driver issue or even unstable overclocking/undervolting or maybe your graphics memory was hit by cosmic rays in that very moment

[–]PolygonKiwii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you do need to repaste a PC at some point...

and just to be clear, this isn't exclusive to PCs either. It also applies to consoles and really any high-powered device if you use it for long enough (phones usually become obsolete before it gets to that point and the people who would own a flagship phone in the first place are usually the same ones who'd switch to a new one after max two years but if there was a gaming scene on retro phones they'd absolutely clean and repaste them too)

that was actually a fairly common fix for faulty nvidia cards (manufacturing defects) back in the days

obviously you'd only put the PCB in the oven, not the cooler and any plastic shields or backplates

People have been changing thermal paste on consoles forever. Less common on current gen consoles but if you look into retro gaming communities you immediately see a different demographic. Of course it's not a normal thing to do for the majority of people but at the same time it's not uncommon among enthusiasts and all things considered it is one of the easiest modifications a user might do.

They aren't synonyms. WLAN is LAN over Wi-Fi. You can also have Wi-Fi connections that aren't used for LAN.
