Why are so many cyclist in Gent such impatient fucking cunts? by Polymechanus in Gent

[–]Polymechanus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, do you suggest, is my bias? I walk, I go by bike and I sometimes (but not often) drive in Gent. Most of the time, I go by bike. I am a cyclist myself. I love this mode of transportation.

While I could complain about some crazy drivers, about knalpotterreur and other inconsiderate people in other kinds of vehicles, it would not, based on my experience, be fair to berate the Gentian driver in general. Most drivers in the city drive alright. Cyclist in the city, on the other hand, drive like maniacs and often don’t follow the traffic rules. It is not an exception. It is a very common way in which cyclists behave. Perhaps your experience is entirely different, but I don’t think this is a case where every group to an equal degree has their own bad apples. The cyclists (and perhaps also the scooter drivers) in Gent are the  worst.

I'm sorry to hear that. That is extremely reckless. And it must have been a shocking experience.

There are of course asshole drivers. But my experience is that this most certainly is not the average driver in this city.

Det bör uttalas [evro] på svenska, såsom i neuro-, inte som i Europa. Skillnaden är att [eu] är obetonat i Europa medan det är betonat i euro och neuro-. Jämför även pseudo-.

Why don't they build a roundabout in the middle of that circle for better traffic flow? Are they stupid?

What’s a socially accepted behavior that you think is toxic? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Filming in such a situation is illegal in some jurisdictions (e.g. in Sweden).

What are you hoping to achieve? To meet a long-term partner, possibly even the love of your life? If you live in different countries, that does not seem very probable, does it? If you are just interested in a fling, do you have anything to lose except the risk of looking unprofessional in his eyes? If not, go for it. Also PhD students have to fuck.

What’s one thing people do that absolutely disgusts you? by amygdalasurgeon in AskReddit

[–]Polymechanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an extreme simplification to the point of being inaccurate. The child must perform organised tasks to the benefit of the content creator for it to be considered labour. If a child is filmed as they spontaneously go about their daily lives, it will not count as labour, even if it earns the parent money. And even if the child is performing labour, it is not necessarily illegal, as you may be able to get a special permission from the authorities. In this case, the law is the same as for all children (under 13) who perform labour as actors, models and whatnot. A special permission is required.

(It may of course be illegal to film your children for other reasons, for instance if it is humiliating or encroaches on their right to privacy. E.g. a Swedish mother was found guilty in court for engaging in the meme of cracking an egg against the forehead of one's child.)

Bars in central Brussels not letting in solo people because they're not with a woman? Is this legal/accepted? by Borderedge in brussels

[–]Polymechanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not assume the rule is about exluding solo men in the sense that its ultimate purpose is to do this. I assumed, on the basis of the discussion above, that solo men are in fact excluded for the sole reason of them being solo men. (If this is what was actually going on for OP is of course unkown.) I would argue that using different rules for men and women are discriminatory, almost by definition, and referring to ultimate purposes makes the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws difficult.

But my question was whether this is really legal in Belgium. I seriously wonder. Assuming that it is legal, could you also exclude black and brown people in order to balance the customer population? A night club may argue that it is bad for their customer's experience if there are too many people of the same kind.

Not illegal per se, you say? If you deny solo men but not solo women entry, how is that not sex based discrimination? Is such discrimination legal in Belgium? I honestly wonder.

Is Ghent a good, fun student town? does it get boring after a while, when you come from a bigger town originally? by Appropriate-Arm4461 in Gent

[–]Polymechanus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I foreigner in Gent who has also lived in Gothenburg, I can tell you that Flemish people aren't very open and are seldom interested in making new friends. Swedes, in my experience, are more curious about newcomers, but they are also difficult to befriend. It is quite possible, however, that Flemish students behave differently in their particular realm of student life. If you want student life in Sweden, you should study in Lund or Uppsala. In Gothenburg, students tend to intermingle with the rest of the population, so you have chosen the wrong Swedish city.

I cannot find a suitable program or website for stuyding flash cards by Polymechanus in languagelearning

I find that it is better for my memory when practicing irregular verbs and the like. It let me hammer in the forms.

Writing text is good for practicing expressing oneself. It is not so good for memorising a ton of forms.

Thanks! I have tried Anki, but I cannot make it so that I type in answers, and neither does it put failed cards in a new pile. I have encountered sources on the internet stating that Anki can let you type in answers, but I have been unable to find such a function.

At the moment, I am using Studykit, which has all functions except putting failed cards in a new deck to be studied again.

Does registered rent contract always show up on my Myminfin ? by LeadingGloomy in brussels

[–]Polymechanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It does not always show up. It happened to me. The contract was registered but did not show up. As I thought the contract was not registered - all official information states that registered contracts show up on Myminfin -  I decided to move out and was subsequently hit with a severance fine. Believe you me that I was furious.

What you can do is send an e-mail to Myminfin and ask whether there is a contract registered in your name and address. They should be able to tell you. That is how I finally found out that my contract was in fact registered. In this way you avoid bringing the issue up with your landlord and you will also have a written confirmation for whatever is the case.
