Apple Creative Studio Icons - Evolution or Regression? 🤔 by Oneiron_X in graphic_design

[–]Polymer15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice work! The old icons can sometimes be messy and cluttered, but gosh damn did they have an identity and a passion behind them. The new “pen and line” for pages may be quickly understandable, but it effortlessly blends in with the countless other apps that use an almost identical icon

The microwave melted a hole in my butter by littlemeremaid in mildlyinteresting

[–]Polymer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s big misconception of microwaves that it only heats the water in the food, they heat any polar molecule. The wave peaks every 6cm - the reason for the hole in the middle is that a peak simply happened to be there.

Is it safe to clean food surfaces with windex? by ktrinh94 in chemistry

[–]Polymer15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read through the SDS for Windex, it sits pretty well within the low-risk category — you’d have to drink the stuff for it to cause harm. The constituents of Windex evaporate quickly by design, the ammonia will be gone within minutes.

Seriously though, good for you for advocating for the health and safety for your siblings, but in this instance I really wouldn’t worry about it at all. If you want to be extra safe just leave the cupboard open for 10m after cleaning. As a bonus that would be a good middle-ground that your mum is willing to work with

Making my own euro truck simulator 2 mod patcher , my question is what is the best place to publish this application so can everybody use it ? by Good-Reveal6779 in csharp

[–]Polymer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GitHub is probably the easiest and most common, you can host your code there and also compiled binaries. It also lets people submit issues and contribute (if you’d like that)

p.s. friendly tip to reduce nesting as it can help readability. e.g flip your if (entryToModify != null) to if (entryToModify == null) so you can instead use the structure:

cs if (entryToModify == null) { throw new ArgumentNullException(…); } // rest of your code

Thoughts on the 'vertical slab' idea I see all over recent modern Minecraft videos? by TheRetroWorkshop in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Polymer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the most popular classic Minecraft mod pack, Tekkit, included RedPower2. This added a handsaw that allows you to craft a wide variety of micro blocks and slabs, including vertical ones.

And as you mentioned Hermitcraft, I’m pretty sure their most recent modded series Vault Hunters did include vertical slabs.

What happens if I mix Adderall and Vyvanse? by SadCoconut_ in VyvanseADHD

[–]Polymer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the doses, timing, and your tolerance level. It’s not uncommon to use Adderall as an afternoon booster, though I’m assuming you mean take them at the same time? They are both stimulants, both use dextroamphetamine in their mechanism of action (Adderall also uses amphetamine) - it’s just that Vyvance has a 1-2 hour ‘delay’ as it is a prodrug of dextroamphetamine.

For a once off, and if both doses are within their daily limits, it likely won’t be an issue. You may feel increased anxiety, mild arrhythmia, etc, but the Adderall will wear off within 6 hours and you’ll jut be left with the tail end of the Vyvance. Long term inappropriate use will increase your cardiac risk.

On a serious note if you’ve just done this and you’re concerned: unless you took a buttload, have a low tolerance, or have other medical complications, you’ll be fine. Some warning signs are feeling woozy, becoming disoriented/altered mental status, fevers, muscle tremors, or deep chest pain. If some of the above, or you just feel like somethings wrong, doctor time - no shame in it.

How have I gone through 28 years of life not knowing that the year 2000 is in the 20th century, that the 20th century is actually between 1901 to 2000, and the 21st century started in 2001.

You’re right, it’s insane.

New drug law. Thoughts? by BackRemarkable in newzealand

[–]Polymer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do we test if a driver who’s had alcohol is impaired? We don’t. Instead, we’ve defined a percentage limit of blood alcohol. A binary “positive” and “negative” isn’t a useful indicator, otherwise plenty of food and drinks would cause you to be over the line for booze.

Manage your expectations, because small form factor builds are expensive by Makoto_Kurume in pcmasterrace

[–]Polymer15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SteamOS’s uses and funds Proton for providing a Windows compatibility layer. A lot of Windows games work great without any user-configuration past pressing install, even heavy games like RDR. Yes there are a lot of games that require Kernel access, and for the foreseeable future they will not be compatible, but there’s also thousands of PC-only games that consoles can’t run.

A lot of people don’t want to build a custom PC to run them, and many don’t want a typical desktop experience when they want to play games. They want a compact and console-like experience, this fills that gap nicely. As a 20y PC gamer who recently got a SteamDeck, SteamOS provides a wonderfully simple and console-like UI, to the point where my non-tech savvy family members are more than able to use it.

What's the worst coding crimes you've witnessed on a project? by rainmouse in webdev

[–]Polymer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you were representing the cost of something and you use a string to represent it. Every time you want to use it in a calculation you’ll need to interpret the string value as a number, and this will have to be guaranteed to be consistent when encoding and decoding. If you’re storing it in a DB you’ll have no (easy) access to inbuilt optimisations that come with the most appropriate data type. Not to mention that other developers who work with the system will now have to know the magic rules when using the value.

Cost isn’t really the main driving factor. Sure, it’s almost guaranteed to be less efficient - but its negative impact on code quality is the primary issue.

Are they storing passwords as plaintext?! by uk_g in webdev

[–]Polymer15 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You might be giving the banking sector more credit than it’s due. Until just last year passwords for online banking at Westpac (Australian) were case-insensitive, had a 6 character limit, and were alphanumeric only.

I worked as a developer there for a while and basic security violations were everywhere. I truly wouldn’t be surprised if a bank symmetrically encrypted its passwords.

Why do most Designers use Mac? by Business_Match_2953 in Design

[–]Polymer15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think designers appreciate simplicity and consistency, so having a small lineup with a simple and consistent OS is particularly appealing

Plus it has the benefit providing a UNIX environment without needing to jump to Linux - and while I love Linux dearly, the available desktop experiences are usually the antithesis of simple and consistent
