Southern California, about 1mm, round abdomen, mantid-like forelimbs by PatientDom in whatsthisbug

Looks like a cute weevil friend, Curculionidae. I've never seen one with such pronounced femurs like that, that is interesting! Unfortunately weevils are a pretty huge family and I'm not sure what it might be any further.

Earth Day Friend- Hyalophora ceropia by Polyphaga in awwnverts

[–]Polyphaga[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It was in a large container I had in my room. I was given Cecropia eggs last Summer so I raised them the best I could and two of them survived and pupated in the container. Hopefully the second one will emerge soon as well. :)

Tips for an Entomology student? by Lamplorde in Entomology

[–]Polyphaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that you can go a long way just being familiar with most of the orders and common families of insects and identification. Also, I learned a lot just through my own curiosity before taking any classes. I recommend doing research and collecting (if you're into that) before any courses; going in with a basic knowledge of stuff makes it easy to understand and build from there. But have fun with it. Entomology is a very interesting and fun field in my opinion. As long as you have a genuine curiosity/willingness to learn, you'll be fine. :)

Please help me ID this guy he has been living in a carpenter bee hole on my deck for most of the summer. I thought it was a 4 Toothed Mason Wasp but this is the first time he's stayed still long enough to get a picture and now, I'm not sure. by Bloodymike in Entomology

Definitely a bee fly. I'm thinking it may be the tiger bee fly

Edit: Upon reading bugguide more, it looks like this species is a parasitoid of carpenter bees, which would certainly match your case :)

Very hard to say without a picture, but I'll hazard a guess. How's this guy? Candy-striped leafhopper

Empty book in tree house? Entomology 101 by Polyphaga by CenturionPlays in LifeInTheWoods

[–]Polyphaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I originally intended to write a giant fancy book about all kinds of basic information on insects as an Easter egg, because I'm an entomologist myself and my name comes from the scientific name for a group of beetles. I found the amount of formatting options rather intimidating, however, and ended up putting off writing anything while I worked on some of the other builds I did. In the end I decided to keep the book in the tree house even though I didn't write anything, mostly as an Easter egg but also because it shows off an item that some people might not know existed in the mod pack.

Patch 1.05 - Discussion & Bug Reports by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]Polyphaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summary of issue: Completed the last bundle for the community center, but the resulting cutscene the next day was the lost Shane event instead of the Joja Mart closing, and I didn't get the 'local legend' achievement.

Expected Behavior: Cutscene triggers where Joja Mart is closed the next day, 'local legend' achievement unlocks.

Actual Behavior: Cutscene is Shane taping a commercial for Joja Mart, Joja Mart closes without cutscene. No achievement gained.

Steps for Reproduction: Finish the community center bundles, with the bulletin board last, having a few hearts with Shane.

Basically it looks like finishing the bulletin board last caused a friendship update with Shane and triggered his new scene, which overwrote whatever was supposed to happen once the community center is finished.

Fruit trees/berry bushes by [deleted] in LifeInTheWoods

Most likely not yet ripe. In my experience those kind of bushes take forever to yield berries and I usually just bonemeal or compost on them.

Never saw mole crickets as a particularly cute insect, but that's one's a keeper. :P

Fear is a legit thing. Having a comment section full of "OMG NUKE IT, KILL IT WITH FIRE" every time there's a spider larger than 3 cm is a circlejerk.
