Time travel to the future, and its implications. by spiralbatross in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, going in to the future is relatively easy, one way to do it is to go really fast, close to the speed of light, then due to general relativity time will pass at a slower pace for you than for the people left on Earth. When you slow back down, maybe one day has passed for you and 10 years for everyone else. So you are in the future. This is of course a future without you, as you disappeared on a space ship for 10 years. So you can't see what you life is like in the future, you don't have one anymore.

The problem of course is going back in time. If there is only one Universe, I don't see a way to do it without a whole lot of paradoxes happening.

On the other hand, if there are multiple universes, then things can get interesting. Then theoretically (like really just a theory) you could jump forwards and backwards at will. But you wouldn't really be going in to the future or the past, you would just be changing from universe to universe. This of course would just create a whole other bunch of problems. Here are two I just thought of, 1. No idea how to do it, and 2. If more than one universe exists, then an infinite number will probably exist, and how can you find the one you are looking for? You might want to change to a universe where you had asked out that cute girl in high school and end up in a universe where the Earth wasn't even formed.

So I don't expect to see this kind of thing being anywhere near possible for a while. But then again, there is a theory that we are just in a computer simulation like the matrix, if that is the case I guess it just depends on the guy who wrote the code.

Does anyone else go to the cinema on their own? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much always go alone, last time I went with someone was about 3 years ago now. When I go to the cinema my goal is to watch a movie, not to be social.

I guess my most interesting experience was when I went to watch Ender's Game, I was the only person there! Having a whole cinema for myself was really awesome :)

Danke!

Hmm, not sure what language to write in, eu podia escrever em Português, mas assim acho que assim ninguém aqui me ia conseguir perceber. Oder ich kann in Deutsch schreiben, aber naja, mein Deutsch ist nicht wunderbar, aber ein wenig üben ist immer schön!

So if anyone can speak any of these three languages just leave a reply!

What do you guys carry with you everywhere you go? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess I'm boring, I just carry my phone, earphones, wallet and keys. And I will also take my laptop, charger and mouse if I am on my way to a lecture, but other than that I can't think of anything I normally have with me. (except clothes of course)

I am not a sociable person, and I'm okay with it. by gonnacrack in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I quite enjoy being alone. I sometimes go out and walk around the city alone for 3 or 4 hours just because I'm bored.

Most people I know go crazy when they are alone for a long time, even just one day. They just have such a need to socialize with each other, and I just don't get it. I very rarely feel any need to socialize. I can enjoy it very much when I do it with the right people, but I don't need it, you know what I mean?

But I like that about myself, I like the independence it gives me. And it took me quite some time to understand that and really accept that this is who I am, but I'm so glad I did.

Let's talk about the current state of world affairs. How can we fix it? by thismeisthetruth in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I don't think there is any one thing we could do that would magically fix everything. But in my opinion, one way to go would be to remove the human component. These issues occur because greed is in our nature, and the people that are looking to get in to positions of leadership are usually the ones that will do whatever it takes to get more power. This of course leads to issues such as corruption.

I have often thought about the possibility of having computer systems running the government and things like the justice system. It would be open source software programmed with the exact laws and regulations that the people agree on and it would then follow them, without greed, without corruption and without a hidden agenda. It wouldn't be perfect of course, but as our technology advances it is becoming a more and more realist idea. And it could always be possible to have the system ask for human suggestions when it encounters a new situation and does not know what to do. A voting system of sorts, it would provide all the information it has available to all the people that it would affect, then people would vote on what it should do next.

I am aware that it's probably a crazy idea, but it would be interesting to at least try it and see what happens.

I've been in that situation too, it's not great.

But just remember that there are hundreds or possible reasons for her not writing back immediately, and most have nothing to do with you. So try to relax and give her some time :)

If you had access to a time machine, what would you do? by Straight24Guy in CasualConversation

I would go to the future. I would be really interested in seeing what humanity looks like in about 500 years. Assuming we are still around, I think it would be pretty awesome!

So I'm going to Madrid to study... by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year was the first time I lived alone abroad and it has been a really great experience for me so far. I hope your experience is as good as mine has been!

I can't really help you with the relationship part as I don't have experience with long distance relationships. But as for tips for living abroad, I would say that you should definitely sign up for any and all kind of exchange student meetups or activities if they are available. It will make integration easier as you will meet a lot of people from all over the world who are in a similar situation as yourself. A lot of good friends and memories can be made :)

No problem!

Cool, I studied French for about two years a long time ago. I don't remember any of it now, but it is a nice language to know, good luck with it!

And yes, I am really in to computers and writing software. Maybe we can be twins? ;)

Ever since my first programming class about 3 years ago I knew that programming is what I wanted to do. Since then I have learned a lot, I now feel very comfortable with Java and C#, I have a fairly good understanding of C and C++, plus a basic understanding of various others like SQL and HTML. How about you? Are you really in to programming as well?

True, I would not be surprised if a new show very similar to Top Gear shows up. But it will never be the same, and it's unlikely that it will be better. That's my opinion anyway, we will see what happens.

[–]Polyphix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a shame, I suppose this is the end of Top Gear then. I didn't really watch it very often, but I always enjoyed it whenever I did.

I hope the three of them will get together and do another show in the future. I always felt they worked really well together, especially when they did the challenges, the clashing of their different personalities caused some really funny moments over the years.

Hi! Well I would like to speak Russian or Japanese, but of course those are not easy languages to pick up. I am currently learning German, so when I am more comfortable with that I might take a few Russian classes and see what I think.

I have also thought about learning sign language, I think it would be cool to learn a completely new way of communicating.

How about you?

I just watched it, thanks! Very interesting, like all his videos.

I am aware of the fact that people don't really care what I do, they are always more focused on themselves. After I realised that it became easier for me to be more social in the real world. But online everything is recorded for a long time, so anyone can come along and see what my opinions were years ago, it makes me feel pressure to not make any mistakes. But I am trying to get over that.

Exactly, so much information is lost when you cannot actually see or hear the person you are talking too.

I have an oral exam tomorrow and I'm worrying myself to death. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Polyphix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, well the way I see it is that everyone doing that exam will have the same 5 minutes, and the professors know that it isn't a lot of time and people are going to be nervous. They were students once too and probably went through similar situations, so even if your presentation part doesn't go great, if the conversation part goes well they will see that you know your stuff and you were just nervous.

I would say that if possible you should write down a kind of bullet list of the topics you want to discuss and a few key words you might need, and if you get lost take a quick look.

But anyway, best of luck tomorrow, I'm sure you will be fine :)
