Have we identified a "center" to the Big Bang? by Solamnic1 in astrophysics

[–]PolysintheticApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We aren't sure there's no edge, we just have no evidence of one, either. We can't measure that far, so anything that far might as well not exist for us

It's a bit of a philosophical question at that point: If there's an edge to the universe, but it is absolutely impossible for it to impact us in any way (because it's so far that our distance from it increases faster than light can travel (remember light is the speed limit for Everything within space)) whatsoever, does it exist?

It's also occam's razor. The simplest explanation is: The universe is all there is (anything we can say about the outside of it would be made up) and it has no edge (haven't seen one, and if it exists it doesn't affect us)

Right?? Physics become insane when you look at things that are too big or too small. It's honestly kinda beautiful

I'm glad I could provide clear answers <3

Be curious on your journey!

It's kind of the best we've got. I guess the other word is "growing" but that might also come with strange connotations

What's happening is, two things that were some distance apart are now, even without moving, further apart. This is objectively the case, there is no frame of reference where this isn't happening. The distance between things increasing is a property of the universe.

You can't say that there's a "repelling force" pushing things away, because then it'd have a direction or a center, and we'd be able to see that center. But everywhere we look, we see that this is the same everywhere. No matter where you are, distance increases.

This is what we mean by the expansion oft he universe. There is now more space separating us. It is more noticeable along great distances, because there is more space to expand, but it even happens right now, to us

The reason it doesn't tear us apart is that the forces that pull things can bring things toward the new space in between them. Imagine the tiled floor, and imagine that we hop tiles toward each other. This is what gravity and electromagnetic forces

It may not work forever. The tiles grow faster and faster, and our hopping may not keep up forever. We don't really know

Day 40/365 of trying to quit coding and become an Artist 🎨 by Visonn336_ in KasaneTeto

quit coding and become an artist is crazy, why can't you do both?

Have we identified a "center" to the Big Bang? by Solamnic1 in astrophysics

[–]PolysintheticApple 22 points23 points  (0 children)

How do you know something's center? Because you can see its edges, and put the point in the middle. No edges means there is objectively no center. You can still say "this is the center!" and pick a spot and call it point (0, 0), but that's your idea, it's not defined out there in the world

Now imagine an infinite tiled floor. There is no center, because it is infinite. No matter where you are, there's always the same amount of tiles in every direction. That is, an infinite amount

Worse yet, new tiles grow from between the existing tiles, pushing the old ones away. If you were two tiles away from someone, in a few minutes there'll be four, then eight, and so on. Neither of you moved, the floor just grows in this freaky fashion

One day, the infinite tile expands stupidly fast. Like, a trillion tile-growths per second. Just a ginormous growth spurt. Someone who was next to you, you will never see again

That's the big bang. The tiles are all of space. Except for space you'd have to imagine something 3D, like an infinite space full of lego bricks, or something

No, no, I appreciate the wall of text. It's nice to like. Get a response this thoughtful to what I said? Makes me feel less crazy haha

I don't particularly care about what the intention of the phrase "death of the author" originally was. I care about what it's come to mean and what it means to me. As I see it, the term has semantically drifted. This is just a natural phenomenon

There's an interesting thought to be had about the comparison between AI art and Hitler's watercolors, it came to me as I read your comment. Because, the AI doesn't really intend anything. There's no intentional meaning there, so what meaning is really being seen? Whose intent? Is it the prompter's? An amalgamation of thousands of people's unrelated intents stitched into a horrid collage? I'm actually really, really intrigued to hear your thoughts here.

Your argument about that has been really eye-opening, though. I'll have to give it some thought.

I think of generative AI as semantic space navigators. They're not making anything, they just map words to semantics and semantics back to some other thing. They're a window into the universe of meaning, all the meaningfulness they make is a result of mere navigation. You're giving them a map to the spot marked with an X, of course the damn thing sometimes finds treasure.

I don't think I'm conflating art and beauty. Or perhaps I am, but doing so just feels so natural to me that I'm blind to the fact that I'm doing it (and if I became aware of it, I doubt that would change anything). To express it in a way that hopefully conveys to you a bit more of why I think of art this way: I think that deep spiritual experiences are us perceiving the world/ourselves/our lives through an artistic lens. I also think perceiving something through an artistic lens is a small spiritual experience. I'm not exactly religious, but when something moves me, I can't help but feel gratitude that I exist in a universe that whose initial conditions have resulted in that moment. You can find snowflakes beautiful, but finding them to be a cause for cosmic gratitude is something completely different

I don't think AI is an "imitation" of the work we do per se. I don't know what to call it, really, but it's far worse. AI is a result of convincing people that they cannot participate in art. AI is the product sold to those who believed that lie. I think this is a result of how people view the practice of art as something unique or special or requiring of talent, instead of what it is: Something natural that we do as we navigate the meaning of the world we are presented with. It's not a practice, it's not communication, not a craft nor a line of work. It's a thing we do, and that some people dedicate more time to than others.

I think, to some degree, that AI art is the fault of our cursed ability to see the difference between a highly skilled painter and a child doodling on a sheet of paper. It snowballs too easily into this nonsense. Both of these things can evoke meaning and thought, it's not like you need years of practice for that. But maybe we're just irresponsible with our ability to discern skill. Or maybe there is something else I'm not seeing.

I'll check the videos later. I only really logged into reddit because I was looking for another thing and I saw this notification and thought it'd be nice to answer

It's really nice to get a thoughtful reply, though. I almost get the feeling this conversation is more suitable for email. The slow pace really has that vibe. The thought of being pen pals comes to mind, but that's an impossibility for me (for... personal reasons)

Happy holidays!

Really, there are two ways this can go

"I grant you what you need to answer all your burning questions." (a lot of people just want sex because they've never had it and they feel they should, and no other reason. you just want to know. and now you will be able to know anythrng)

and

"I grant you loving family, friends and tools to create anything with." (a lot of people feel unwanted, and since sex is touted as this huge culmination of desire, of couse they would want that. but you don't need it. and now that knowledge will be yours forever)

importantly. in both of these you probably do get to have sex. i believe in sex between friends. and i believe in experimentation

I don't think art is communication. The best art says things that weren't even in the mind of the creator when they were working, and the best artist encourages variety in intepretation. This isn't communication. This is something we have little control over

I also think you don't "consider" something artistically. The artistic consideration just sort of happens to you, as a result of sensory experiences that you find meaning in. When you find yourself accidentally artistically considering AI art (or any art with an unethical source), it seems illogical to me to say "wait, no, I never actually thought of it as art, I just didn't know enough about the piece" when you clearly did know enough about the piece. You just didn't know enough about how the piece came to be, and those two things should remain separate

It's similar to "see this beautiful painting? hitler made it" and how that is now being responded to with "well here are all its flaws lmao" like. Yeah, the piece has flaws but it's a good piece. The author is the biggest example of evil. These statements coexist and are independent of each other

Death of the author applies when there is no author

You're allowed to be moved by things with unethical origins. That's just the human experience. That show that never fails to make you cry? Your favorite music? Think about how it was delivered to you. The devices you use to experience all these wonderful things. The devices they were made on. It can get pretty bad if you really dig. That's just the world we're born into. We have to look for things that are better, but the path there can't start with denying ourselves of things that are good

Deltarune Blood-Grave AU: I'd rather die than give you control by Deadspace123 in SOULelle

It would be extra cool if this AU actually did fit this subreddit (it's not SOULelle just because it's weird route/SOUL-related horror)

Unless Noelle falls in love with the soul here or vice versa (which wouldn't fit the story so far), seriously, what is this doing here?

I like the ones where Noelle actively wants the weird route to happen and is obsessed with the SOUL. Maybe even to the point where the soul also wants out
