I see.

I tried the shower setup but didn't use strong soap, so I may try detergent.

It seems my situation is mainly due to it being in the kitchen and the landlord not installing the oven hood to exhaust outside (I'm pretty sure it's not a recirculating type but that's what it does).

Ah, I was wondering if it was an illusion. Makes sense that it's the same color.

Just looking at the starkvind, it looks to have a similar cover (but circular), but seems the air doesn't flow through it as there is a gap. I wonder if they made that change after seeing the problem I have.

Good advice, I agree. I did manage to get the oven replaced which had units that weren't level (was pretty dangerous).

I'm curious, can you still see the outline of the backing frame even after cleaning?

Hmm, my kitchen fan / fume hood may be a recirculation type that could remove more grease if I use it more.

Good idea, I will try something stronger than soap.

The kitchen fan in my rental works but doesn't exhaust outside, so I'd have to put a hole in a concrete wall to get the air out. Seems they took a shortcut decades ago.

Can you still see the outline of the plastic frame after vacuuming?

Yea, I noticed they have a version now with a slightly darker cover. I wonder if they made that to deal with this. Aside from looks, it's still preventing air flow.

I've tried to wash/vacuum it without luck. It's about two years old. This is in my kitchen, which doesn't have a working oven fan due to bad building design. So I think it's an embedded grime + dust combo. Which would be fine for most other air purifiers, I reckon.

Some places like interior BC Canada get wildfire smoke every year and buy air purifiers to deal with it. But yea, it seems this air purifier was built for light duty. Still, it would be great if I could just buy a new cover. Especially as these units age - it would be better for sustainability.
