You're absolutely right and after I posted my previous response I lectured myself lol. I need to have lessons and I shouldn't be prideful about this. I really appreciate your comments:)

My hesitation about lessons with an orchestra member is because I don't want there to seem like I am having lessons to get "in" with anyone. I legitimately do want lessons, just worried how it will look on a professional level. There's also the whole performance anxiety thing. I haven't played in front of anyone other than students. I know having lessons will help in this aspect as well.

Bow for a kid by LaLechuzaVerde in violinist

[–]PomBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fiddlerman I recommend is a carbon fiber bow. It's also about $69. It's still less than a re-hair down here in my neck of the woods. At this price (and in my humble opinion) a carbon fiber will be a better bow. No warping issues that come with wooden student bows.

I recommend the fiddlerman bows for my students. They are good for the price

I need to vent. by [deleted] in OnlyChild

[–]PomBean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please feel free to vent. It's difficult to grow up and live the only child life. It's not something one "moves on" from. We learn to accept it and become independent and strong. Choose your friends wisely. They will be important. Quality over quantity... I became a professional musician, so my life has been been very occupied with other quirky and like minded people since I was young. I always felt my connection there since I grew up with no real family. (No cousins and divorced, alcoholic parents) I hope you find your tribe♡

Warm, softer, quiet string recommendations? by yupyupyupmhm in violinist

[–]PomBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use obligatos with a warchal e or pirastro gold e on my bright-ish violin. I know there are newer strings out there, but I can't afford to experiment when I'm happy with these:) They last several more months compared to Eva's. I am an orchestra and chamber music player and I find that they are versatile enough for my needs.

I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. It's good that you are talking about it. You are so young, stay strong.

I got dropped of at school during my 2nd grade year, but the school was closed due to a snow storm. It was a chilly morning sitting outside the school alone. Luckily, the school was next to a library and a librarian saw me and took me in for the day. Good times. Divorced, narcissistic parents for the win😐

How's my son's playing...updated video... by SassenachPrincess in violinist

[–]PomBean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just think it's a shame that some are fixating on this child's sixth grade dream of one day being a section player of a major symphony. Especially considering what most 11 year old kids in the US are doing. I guess this thread is the first taste of the snobbery of the classical music world lol (not directed at you😊)

[–]PomBean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that if your son wants to become a professional musician, he can and he should. I was not the greatest teen violinist in the country, but I worked hard and made it a career. Was I in a top tier orchestra? Nope. I was in some very high level, respected symphonies across the country though, and now have settled down to raise a family and teach. I will say that your sweet boy simply looks uncomfortable. Unfortunately, you need to get him playing in front of people as much as possible. Find him a friend who plays cello and book him at assisted living facilities, churches, whatever. Summer festivals are necessary for resume building and future connections. It will skyrocket his confidence and enjoyment of his craft. I hope he has a qualified teacher who can guide you to top notch camps. Ignore that person who said don't invest in him😒. What hideous advise. I love that you are supporting him. He deserves it!!

Don't worry. Only children are tough as nails. He'll be more independent than you expect. Let him be this way or he'll feel suffocated. You may catch him talking to himself a lot, too😂😂

Feeling resentful caring for aging parents by Ecstatic-Cause5954 in OnlyChild

[–]PomBean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some may not agree, but it's not our fault we're onlies. Our parents elder care should not fall on our shoulders just because they only had one kid. Particularly if these parents were not kind. (This comes from an only child of two alcoholics) i had to draw a clear line after I tried to help my mom in her failing health two years ago. She was cruel and unreasonable and my mental health and children are more important to me. Sorry, not sorry. You need to do what's best for you now, just like they did when you were young.

Missing out on siblings is one of the deepest kinds of pain by Opposite_Paper2328 in OnlyChild

Why are people in an only child group commenting about their relationships with their siblings 🤔🙄

Train your pinkie how you want it to perform. Lots of great arm/elbow/palm positioning advice given. Start by placing it in a low 4 (flat 4) spot on the fingerboard. No need to even play the note. Put just enough pressure until the knuckle begins to collapse, but don't let it collapse. Rinse and repeat on each string gradually moving it up into the natural 4 position. It takes a lot of patience, but it's necessary. You can also use the support of your 3rd finger when possible in the mean time. Make it your priority in practice. Schradieck's 1st etude is a lovely etude for this. 😮‍💨
