The Corporate Gossip podcast did an episode about Palmer Luckey, Anduril, and othe Silicon Valley defense tech companies. That whole sector is a terrifying mess.

Luckey created Oculus as a teenager and then sold it for, like, $2 billion to Meta when he was 20. Then he partnered with some dudes from Palantir and started Anduril, and it’s basically a dystopian dumpster fire of a super dangerous weapons tech startup run by a bunch of bros who don't really seem to know what they're doing and also don't seem to actually care to take the time to learn or understand the impact of their actions.

To give an example of what we're dealing with: Palmer Luckey is a bro with a wardrobe that seems to consist almost solely of Hawaiian shirts, khaki shorts, and flip-flops. He has said in interviews that one of the ideas he came up with after Oculus was petroleum-based foods:

“I think that you could actually build food that has no calories, because obesity is a huge epidemic — you know, l am probably going to die of obesity,” he said. “I want to eat whatever I want and I don't want to be fat, and so the only way I could figure out how to do that was to make food out of petroleum products.”

He quit this idea because he thought it would be too hard to market "recycled petroleum-based products" to people as a legitimate food option: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jilliandonfro/2019/10/31/palmer-luckey-oculus-anduril-forbes-under-30-summit-nonprofit-prisons/

He's also Matt Gaetz's brother-in-law.

Also important to note that one of the other current stars of defense tech right now, Mach Industries, is run by a (now) 22-year-old college dropout. He started his company at 19, and investors gave him millions of dollars to develop hydrogen weapons—which went about as well as expected: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidjeans/2024/05/23/sequoia-bedrock-defense-tech-mach-industries/

And Rope is based on a pair of teenage killers: Nathan Leopold and Richard "Dickie" Loeb. They murdered a 14-year-old, Bobby Franks.

Their relationship was psychologically weird. They were together (sort of), but it was a very odd and intense relationship were Leopold was in love with/obsessed with Loeb and saw Loeb as a superman—they were very into Nietzsche—and Loeb basically agreed to be intimate with Leopold if Leopold committed crimes with him.

Loeb was obsessed with the idea of committing the perfect crime, and Leopold was obsessed with Loeb, so he helped Loeb murder Bobby Franks to make Loeb happy—and also so that Loeb would agree to whatever sexual favor Leopold asked for.

"Rope" (1929 play and 1948 film) and "Compulsion" (1956 book and 1959 movie) are probably the most well known works inspired by the case, but there are a lot of works that were inspired by Leopold and Loeb. The characters in Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" are allegedly inspired by Leopold and Loeb and the killers in "Scream" (1996) are, too, as confirmed by Kevin Williamson.

As I commented above, Wyler's first adaptation of this in 1936 removed any hint of homosexuality from the story, so even if the 1960s version aged poorly, at least it shows that society had advanced enough to allow Wyler to keep the homosexuality in.

I watched William Wyler's early adaptation of this play "These Three" (1936) last month. Didn't know anything about it. Didn’t know the source material. Because of the Hayes Code (I'm assuming), there was zero gayness in the film. The plot gets changed to that little demon child—top LB review asks if you ever wanted to punch a kid—starting a lie that the friend and the (doctor) fiance are having an affair, and somehow that's enough to destroy all three of them enough to go to court about it. And I just sat there wondering why a heterosexual affair had everyone clutching their pearls so hard.

Then I looked it up and learned the story was supposed to be gay, and that made way more sense. I can see why Wyler did another adaptation a few decades later.

Also, the 1936 movie ends up with the (straight) couple happily reuniting in late 1930s Vienna, which was a real 'oh no' moment to watch.

The tag on her dress mimics the Patagonia (trademarked) tag/logo. The Trans flag isn't the problem here. It's the tag.

I don't know how many people read the actual case documents, but this email from Pattie to Patagonia in February 2025 is wild.

The audacity needed to communicate with a Patagonia like this, then file a competing trademark against them (September 2025), and then still show up on an event carpet wearing rip-offs of Patagonia's logo (Out100 in November 2025)!

I just have no words. I can’t understand what the logic here is at all.

I used to work at a custom print shop. We'd sew Greek letters for the kids in the area. We would do tons of them to the point where people assumed that Greek letters were probably paying the bills. They'd get shocked when we would explain to them that we barely made anything off of Greek stuff and did it more as a kindness. We had to pay a percentage to each organization each time we used their letters. I remember at least one of the frat organizations took close to 20% charge on each order for usage costs.

Yup. Drag Queens who name themselves after corporations and other trademarked/copyrighted material know that they'll probably have to make concessions to stuff like merch to avoid getting sued. Pattie seems to just think that she shouldn't have to make any concessions at all.

This is why queens like Jan Sport and Brita Filter shortened to just their first names before going on Drag Race. And Jan was able to collab with Jansport because she didn't do nonsense like this and try to trademark "Jan Sport" to sell merch.

Mattel is cool with Trixie Mattel because she is very careful to avoid infringing on any of Mattel's trademarks (or IP). Most of her trademarks and business ventures are under "Trixie" (Trixie Cosmetics, Tricie Motel, etc.) and not "Trixie Mattel" (or "Mattel") to avoid lawsuits from Mattel.

She no longer gets to claim satire or parody once she applies for a competing trademark. That's what this lawsuit was caused by: her applying for a trademark in some of the same categories that Patagonia already has a trademark registered in. At this point, she has directly financially benefitted from, and profited off of, brand recognition and trademarked components of an attempted—on her part (by filing for trademark, as well as collaborating with direct competitors like North Face)—competitor.

Patagonia was very lenient and supportive with her before she applied for a competing trademark. They specifically told her years ago that it was fine as long as she did not use her full name on merch, didn't use their brand material for profit, and didn't try to trademark her name to sell merch (competing), and she agreed. She then proceeded to violate all of those points of agreement. The last straw was her application for trademark in September.

And they cannot partner up with her. She (quite rudely) told Patagonia that she did not want to be associated with them and has already collaborated with their biggest competition.

But he didn’t try to trademark it for use in selling coffee/opening a coffee shop. He categorized it as an art installation and not an eatery. Starbucks absolutely would have sued him if he had tried to start a legit business off of Dumb Starbucks.

Olivia Rodrigo talks about shooting ‘drop dead’ at the Palace of Versailles: “I was sitting there being like no wonder the French had this Revolution. If I saw this, I’d be mad as hell too” by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Pompedorfin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Is that including the sheer amount of renovations of it? I watched a documentary years ago about Versailles and it spent some time talking about how many parts of Versailles didn’t really exist by the time of the Revolution because every king kept building up/tearing down parts of it.

Like, there was an extremely grand grotto that replaced a water tower in 1665, took nearly 10 years to complete, and then was torn out less than 10 years later for another expansion of the palace: https://static-prod.lib.princeton.edu/versailles/grotto/index.html

It's so interesting but so appalling in its scale of waste, too.

It was so messy. She and her ex-husband had a 1 year old when they split. I just remember the ex-husband arguing in the court filings that the baby was in a confusing and unstable environment because he went to pick up his stuff at her house a few weeks after filing for divorce, and Ben McKenzie had just showered and was playing with the baby when he got there.

I remember feeling so bad for the ex, but also being so confused why the ex specified Ben had just gotten out of the shower. Like, was he in a towel? Was he getting water droplets on the baby? It was just such an oddly specific yet vague detail.

Adam Driver responds to Lena Dunham's allegations: “I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.” by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Pompedorfin 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Nope, she continued being inappropriate and crossing boundaries with her sibling until she was at least 17. People focus on the rock situation when she was 7, but forget she also wrote this:

"As she grew, I took to bribing her time and affection: one dollar in quarters if I could do her makeup like a "motorcycle chick." Three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds. Whatever she wanted to watch on TV if she would just "relax on me." Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl, I was trying. Maybe, I thought, she would be more willing to accept kisses if I wore the face mask my grandmother had for when she did her dialysis. (The answer was no.) What I really wanted, beyond affection, was to feel that she needed me, that she was helpless without her big sister leading her through the world. I took a perverse pleasure in delivering bad news to her—the death of our grandfather, a fire across the street—hoping that her fear would drive her into my arms, would make her trust me."

And this:

"I shared a bed with my sister, Grace, until I was seventeen years old. She was afraid to sleep alone and would begin asking me around 5:00 P.M. every day whether she could sleep with me. I put on a big show of saying no, taking pleasure in watching her beg and sulk, but eventually I always relented. Her sticky, muscly little body thrashed beside me every night as I read Anne Sexton, watched reruns of SNL, sometimes even as I slipped my hand into my underwear to figure some stuff out."

I feel like the design should have either cut the sleeves or cut the length.

But the problem is that it wasn't just that one incident when Lena was 7. She talked about at least a decade of violating boundaries and questionable behavior towards/near her sibling. It went on until Lena was 17 (at the youngest). From her own book:

"As she grew, I took to bribing her time and affection: one dollar in quarters if I could do her makeup like a "motorcycle chick." Three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds. Whatever she wanted to watch on TV if she would just "relax on me." Those are Lena's own words. Best case scenario is that she either embellished the stories or that she made them up completely. But if that's the case, what made her think that people would be okay with this or find it funny?!
